In early 2025, hiring limits at the University of Washington raised concerns about the flow of researchers into labs—and, over time, the research that can lead to new companies. GeekWire reported that UW Medicine froze hiring for non-clinical roles in February, followed by a university-wide freeze on non-essential positions in March. The coverage connected those constraints to increased interest in the Institute for Protein Design after director David Baker won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
This is a report on conditions described in 2025, not confirmation that the same freeze remains in effect. UW’s Office of the Provost page, updated September 3, 2026, describes continuing uncertainty around federal research funding policies but does not establish the current status of the 2025 hiring restrictions.
What the reported UW hiring freeze covered
The restrictions were described as unfolding in two stages, with different scopes:
| When | Reported restriction | What the source establishes |
|---|---|---|
| February 2025 | UW Medicine temporary hiring freeze for non-clinical roles | GeekWire’s April 2, 2025 report described the freeze as temporary. It did not provide a total number of positions affected. |
| March 2025 | University-wide freeze on non-essential positions | GeekWire reported limits on graduate admissions and postdoctoral hiring, with lab exemptions possible. The report did not quantify lost admissions or jobs. |
The distinction matters: the reports did not describe a blanket halt to every UW hire or clinical position. They described restrictions on particular categories of hiring, alongside barriers to bringing new researchers into labs.

Why the Nobel Prize surge made the constraints notable
Baker’s Nobel recognition in October 2024 increased interest from prospective graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in the Institute for Protein Design (IPD), according to GeekWire. That attention arrived as labs faced uncertainty over federal research budgets and threatened state funding. The result was a mismatch between heightened interest in research opportunities and institutions’ ability to bring people in.
The stakes extend beyond one hiring cycle. Graduate students and postdocs do research, develop specialized expertise, and can help carry scientific discoveries toward practical applications. If labs cannot recruit or retain people, work may slow and fewer ideas may advance toward commercialization. That is a plausible risk of constrained research capacity, not a measured count of startups lost because of the 2025 freeze.

How UW research connects to startup formation
GeekWire reported that IPD had spun off 10 startups since 2014 and that Baker had co-founded 21 technology companies. Those figures describe reported activity as of the 2025 article; they are not current totals or evidence that the hiring freeze caused a specific company to fail to launch.
A-Alpha Bio
GeekWire described A-Alpha Bio as an IPD-origin company that designs proteins and measures their interactions, including interactions between antibodies and viruses. At the time of that report, it had raised $65.5 million and had about 50 employees. Both are article-time snapshots, not current financing or headcount figures.

Monod Bio
GeekWire described Monod Bio as an IPD-rooted business making proteins for research, diagnostic, and clinical settings. It illustrates another route from academic research to commercial products, but the reporting does not establish that a particular hiring restriction delayed its formation or development.
What UW reported about research funding and opportunities
In a March 20, 2025 account, UW Medicine reported Baker’s warning that funding uncertainty was reducing graduate opportunities and disrupting lab hiring and grant renewals. Baker said graduate admissions in his department had fallen by more than a factor of two. That was his statement about his department, not a measured university-wide or national admissions statistic.

- The heating plate’s PID digital temperature control enables fast and uniform temperature rise. Temperature control range: room temperature to 50°C
- The LED digital display of the slide warmer provides temperature readings for convenient monitoring.
- Temperature control stage applied electrostatic powder coating for anti-static performance.
- Our heated lab equipment has heating element made of aluminum alloy, long-lasting and durable.
- This microscope warming stage is versatile in biology, medicine industries and research laboratories.
“The cumulative effect of this uncertainty is way out of proportion to the amount of funding saved. Instead, it just wreaks havoc on a system that has to behave conservatively because it can’t pay people if there isn’t money coming in,”
In the same account, Baker said that the acceptance rate in his department—the number of students admitted—had gone down by more than a factor of two. His remarks convey the effect he saw on opportunities and lab operations; they are attributed statements, not independent measurements of every UW program.

UW’s June 2025 Provost update later documented delays in award notices, non-competitive renewals, and fund disbursements, as well as grants or contracts being canceled, paused, or terminated. These university-reported developments show the kinds of funding disruptions affecting research in 2025, but they do not provide a quantified current tally.

UW’s Office of the Provost page, updated September 3, 2026, says the university remains concerned about possible federal grant-policy changes and describes ongoing funding-policy uncertainty. It does not confirm whether the specific hiring freeze reported in February and March 2025 is still active. The supported description is therefore a reported 2025 freeze, not a verified current UW policy.
For readers evaluating the present situation, keep hiring status separate from funding conditions: the Provost page supports the claim that policy uncertainty remained a concern as of its update date, but it does not establish that non-clinical or non-essential hiring restrictions continued.
What the figures do—and do not—show
- GeekWire reported 10 IPD startup spinouts since 2014 and 21 technology companies co-founded by Baker in 2025. These figures indicate a history of commercialization, not startups prevented by the freeze.
- GeekWire quoted Life Science Washington CEO Marc Cummings citing 2.3 million U.S. life-science-industry employees. This is Cummings’s attributed figure, not a government labor-statistics estimate presented in the article.
- GeekWire’s $65.5 million financing and roughly 50-employee figures for A-Alpha Bio describe the company at the time of its reporting, not its current scale.
- UW Medicine reported Baker’s statement that graduate admissions in his department had fallen by more than a factor of two. It should not be generalized to all UW departments or to the country as a measured rate.
Taken together, the reporting supports a concern about a disrupted research-to-innovation pipeline: interest in UW research increased, while funding uncertainty and hiring constraints made it harder for some labs to bring in researchers. It does not establish how many positions were lost, how many companies were affected, or whether the 2025 freeze remains in force.
