An earlier Guardian profile, published on 22 October 2010, described her fortune as £100 million. Both are press estimates, not verified valuations, and their methods are not disclosed.
What was Hilary Devey’s net worth?
The Guardian’s 13 June 2022 obituary reported that Devey had built up personal wealth of more than £80 million through her distribution company, Pall-Ex. It did not explain how that figure was calculated, so it should be treated as a reported estimate rather than an audited net-worth figure or an exact valuation of her estate. The Guardian’s 2022 obituary
A 22 October 2010 Guardian profile described Devey’s fortune as £100 million. That article also gave Pall-Ex’s annual profit as £3 million and said she was its only shareholder at the time. Those business details provide context, but company profit is not the same as personal wealth. The Guardian’s 2010 profile
| Publication | Reported wording | What the figure establishes |
|---|---|---|
| The Guardian, 22 October 2010 | £100 million fortune | A contemporary media estimate; no calculation method is stated. Source |
| The Guardian, 13 June 2022 | Personal wealth of more than £80 million | A later media estimate linked to Pall-Ex; no calculation method is stated. Source |
The two figures should not be read as proof that her wealth fell from £100 million to £80 million. They were published 12 years apart, use different wording, and do not share a disclosed valuation method.

How did Hilary Devey make her money?
Devey founded Pall-Ex, a palletised freight distribution business, in 1996. Her wealth was associated with the company she built and owned. Pall-Ex announced in 2019 that Devey had agreed to sell the group to its network membership and management. The company said the contracts were signed on 15 October and completion was anticipated for 31 October. Pall-Ex’s sale announcement
Companies House records show that Devey ceased to be a person with significant control on 12 November 2019, with Pall-Ex Investments Limited recorded as holding 75% or more. This corroborates a change in control, but it does not disclose the sale price or how much Devey received. Companies House record

- From the acclaimed, award-winning author of Alexander Hamilton: here is the essential, endlessly engrossing biography of John D. Rockefeller, Sr.—the Jekyll-and-Hyde of American capitalism.
- In the course of his nearly 98 years, Rockefeller was known as both a rapacious robber baron, whose Standard Oil Company rode roughshod over an industry, and a philanthropist who donated money lavishly to universities and medical centers.
- He was the terror of his competitors, the bogeyman of reformers, the delight of caricaturists—and an utter enigma.
Why Pall-Ex’s revenue is not her net worth
Business revenue and profit describe a company’s operations; they do not state how much an owner personally has. The Guardian reported Pall-Ex turnover of £85 million and operations in 26 countries when describing the business at the time of its 2019 sale. Its 2022 obituary also described the company as turning over more than £100 million a year. Those figures are not personal net-worth estimates. The Guardian on Pall-Ex at the time of the sale The Guardian’s 2022 obituary
Likewise, the £3 million annual profit cited in the 2010 profile was Pall-Ex’s profit, not Devey’s personal income or assets. Her ownership may help explain the origin of her wealth, but the available figures do not establish the amount she retained after costs, taxes, or any later changes in her finances.
Is Hilary Devey’s estate value or Pall-Ex sale price known?
The cited sources do not publish a verified estate value, the price paid for Pall-Ex, or Devey’s personal proceeds from the sale. The Companies House entry records a change in significant control, while the company announcement describes the transaction; neither provides a sale price. It would therefore be misleading to present the more-than-£80-million estimate as her exact estate value or as the cash she received for Pall-Ex.
