Hostess’s mold-related recall notice concerned select Ding Dongs packages in 2025—not every Ding Dongs product or every Hostess snack. The listed best-if-used-by dates ran from August 30 through September 3, 2025, and have passed. If you have a package, compare its product description, UPC, lot number, and date with the official Hostess recall listing; contact Hostess there with package-specific questions.
What Hostess announced
Hostess describes the 2025 action as a voluntary recall. In a distributor notice dated August 20, 2025, The J. M. Smucker Co. called it a product withdrawal and said five lot codes were affected. These are the respective terms used by the company sources.
Hostess said its investigation found a mechanical issue with a piece of equipment that created conditions that could support mold development before the product’s expiration date. The company said the issue was limited to a period of time and had been resolved. The notice applies to selected packages, not all Ding Dongs or all Hostess products.
The distributor notice instructed distributors to examine inventory, destroy affected product still on hand, and complete destruction and credit paperwork. Those are distributor instructions, not steps for consumers.

How to check whether your package is listed
Hostess’s recall page lists affected Ding Dongs in 6-count, 10-count, and 16-count formats, with package identifiers and best-if-used-by dates. Check all of the identifying details against the official listing rather than relying on the product name or package size alone.
- Find the product description and package format. Confirm that your package is one of the Ding Dongs formats named on Hostess’s page.
- Compare the UPC. Match the UPC printed on your package to the UPC listed for the product.
- Compare the lot number. Check the package’s lot number against the listed code.
- Check the best-if-used-by date. The listed dates are August 30, 31, and September 1, 2, or 3, 2025.
- Contact Hostess if the details match or are unclear. Use the contact route on the recall page for questions about your specific package.
The full listing is the reliable way to match a package to the notice because a product name or date by itself does not establish that its UPC and lot number are included.

What to know about the dates and a possible remedy
The listed best-if-used-by dates were all in 2025 and have passed. The available notice does not establish whether a particular package someone still has is affected or what remedy Hostess may offer in 2026. Contact the company with the package details rather than assuming a refund, replacement, or other remedy is available.

A separate mold-related event involved certain Raspberry Zingers. The FDA posted an expanded voluntary recall announcement on August 25, 2020, concerning those products, with different UPCs, batches, and dates. It was not the 2025 Ding Dongs action. The 2020 notice said that recall did not affect other Hostess Brands products.

The FDA explains that its recalls page covers certain FDA-regulated recalls and alerts, that not all recalls appear there, and that notices remain on the live page for three years before moving to its archive. Therefore, absence from the live page alone does not show that no recall took place.
