The Honda S2000 is appreciating because it combines a finite supply with renewed collector interest and an enthusiast-focused driving experience that is increasingly hard to find in newer cars. Recent U.S. Hagerty valuation data show moderate gains for representative 2000 and 2005 examples—not a uniform surge into “supercar realms.” Those figures are condition-specific guide estimates, not guaranteed sale prices or evidence that values will keep rising.
What recent S2000 values show
Hagerty’s July 2026 U.S. valuation guides show gains over both one and three years for the two model years below. The #3 Good range is a condition-based estimate; it should not be read as a transaction price for every car.

These figures are from Hagerty’s U.S. guides in July 2026. The guide ranges apply to the stated model years and condition category, while the sales counts, volume, and averages cover broader model-year groupings. They describe different measures and should not be treated as interchangeable. Hagerty’s 2000 S2000 valuation page and its 2005 S2000 page provide the cited snapshots.
“Like supercar realms” is therefore better understood as a headline comparison than a conclusion supported by these values. The cited guides show measured appreciation, and the two years have different rates of change. They do not establish that every S2000 has risen equally, that any particular car will sell within its guide range, or that future returns will continue.

Why buyers are paying attention
A distinctive driving formula
The S2000 pairs a naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual, rear-wheel drive, and a roadster body. For some enthusiasts, that combination—and the early car’s high-revving character—offers a different appeal from more modern performance cars. A distinctive experience can help sustain collector demand, though it does not by itself determine a car’s market price.
Interest from younger enthusiasts
Hagerty UK reported in 2024 that 59% of its S2000 policyholders were aged 49 or younger, including 17% under 30. It also said the number of S2000 policies it added globally in 2023 was 17% higher than in 2022, at a growth rate five times that for all vehicles. These are Hagerty policyholder figures, not a census of owners or a measure of all market sales; they indicate interest within that insurer’s customer group. A finite production run, with a rare special edition
U.S. S2000 production ended in 2009, after 66,549 U.S. sales, according to Hagerty’s 2025 valuation report. The Club Racer (CR), a track-focused version with a hardtop instead of the power soft top and chassis and aerodynamic changes, was much rarer: Honda planned 2,000, but Hagerty reports 668 U.S. sales in 2008 and 31 in 2009. Scarcity can make a model more collectible, but production totals alone do not explain appreciation or guarantee a premium for an individual example. AP1, AP2 and CR: why not every S2000 is comparable
AP1: the early car
Hagerty describes the AP1 as the higher-revving, cleaner-styled choice for some enthusiasts. Its appeal is partly a matter of preference rather than a universal ranking: a buyer drawn to that early character may value it differently from someone prioritizing the later car’s revisions.

AP2: later U.S. cars
In the U.S., the later AP2 received a 2.2-liter engine, more torque, and chassis revisions intended to make handling more forgiving. Hagerty’s report describes the redline dropping from 8,900 rpm to 8,000 rpm, torque rising from 153 to 162 lb-ft, and peak power remaining about 237 bhp. These specifications are not universal across markets: Hagerty UK notes that UK AP2 cars retained the F20C, while U.S. and Japanese AP2 models received the larger engine. Check the market and year before comparing specifications or prices.
CR: a distinct track-focused variant
The CR’s equipment and low U.S. sales make it a separate comparison from an ordinary roadster. A CR sale—or an exceptionally original, low-mileage car—should not be blended casually into an average for standard-use S2000s. Variant, condition, and documentation all affect how meaningful a comparison is.

How to judge a quoted S2000 price
A headline auction result or asking price says little without a close match. Compare cars with the same year and generation, and account for the details most likely to change value:
- Condition and mileage: A guide category is not a substitute for inspecting the actual car or confirming its mileage.
- Originality and modifications: Extensive modifications can narrow the buyer pool; Hagerty advises avoiding abused, neglected, or heavily modified examples.
- Service and ownership history: Documentation and provenance help establish how the car has been used and maintained.
- Variant and specification: Separate a CR from a standard roadster, and verify the market-specific AP1/AP2 details.
- Sale context: An asking price, a completed sale, a guide estimate, and a broad model-year average are different kinds of evidence.
Hagerty’s U.S. figures are estimates for a specific market and date; its UK valuation page says that its guide is updated quarterly. Neither should be applied as a universal price across regions, years, or conditions. Hagerty UK’s valuation page describes its guide context.

What appreciation means for an owner or buyer
For an owner, rising guide values may support checking whether an insurance valuation still reflects the car’s condition and specification. For a buyer, the same trend is not a reason to stretch beyond a defensible price: a neglected or corroded car can erase the appeal of a seemingly favorable deal. Hagerty UK warns that S2000s may have seen hard use and are becoming susceptible to corrosion, so a careful inspection matters alongside the paperwork.
For personal-finance purposes, treat appreciation as an uncertain market outcome, not a promised return. The available figures show past guide movement and evidence of collector interest, but do not account for an individual car’s purchase price, upkeep, insurance, storage, or eventual selling costs.
