OnlyFans verification is meant to confirm that users are adults and, for creators, establish who is operating the account. The steps can differ for fans and creators, and they may vary by country. In the UK, age checks also sit within online-safety rules requiring covered services to use highly effective age assurance before people can access pornography.
Why does OnlyFans ask you to verify?
There are two related reasons: the platform describes verification as part of its account onboarding, while local laws can require age checks before access to adult content. OnlyFans told Ofcom that it checks creator age and identity before approving creator accounts. For UK users, Ofcom’s guidance says covered services must apply highly effective age assurance before a user can view pornographic content or access the service, unless the service has already determined the user is an adult.
These are distinct points: a platform’s account process is not the same thing as a legal requirement that applies to every service in every country. Ofcom’s rules cover Part 5 publishers of pornography and also address Part 3 user-to-user services, which can include services hosting user-generated content. The specific duties depend on how a service is classified.
Do fans and creators go through the same checks?
No. In a response hosted by Ofcom, OnlyFans described separate onboarding processes for creators and fans. Those descriptions are the company’s account of its process, not an independent audit or a guarantee of the current steps for every person.

Creator verification
OnlyFans told Ofcom that creators submit a photo of photographic ID and a live face capture through a third-party verification provider. The submission also lists address, bank details, social-media information and, in the United States, a Social Security number. OnlyFans said accounts then receive manual approval.
Fan verification
OnlyFans told Ofcom that fans must register before viewing media and provide an active payment card in the account holder’s name, an address and date of birth. Its response also said UK fans were checked by third-party software using a selfie to estimate age.

So the answer to “Do subscribers have to submit ID?” is not necessarily: the company’s submission described different fan and creator information, and did not establish that every fan everywhere must upload an identity document. The precise flow may depend on location, account type and the platform’s current process.
What counts as an effective age check in the UK?
Ofcom says methods that can be highly effective at determining whether someone is 18 include photo-ID matching, facial age estimation, digital identity services, credit-card checks, open banking, mobile-network age checks and email-based age estimation. Ofcom says self-declaration and debit-card checks alone are not highly effective for determining whether someone is 18. A payment card or clicking an “I am over 18” declaration therefore should not be treated as sufficient on its own under this guidance.

Ofcom says an age-assurance process should be “technically accurate, robust, reliable and fair” in its user guide to age checks. Its guidance also says services must consider privacy and data protection, and account for accessibility and fairness. The method available to you may depend on your country and the service’s process.

On 1 May 2024, Ofcom said it had grounds to suspect that OnlyFans had not implemented age checks sufficiently to protect under-18s under the video-sharing-platform regime then applicable, and announced an investigation. That notice records the regulator’s position at that time; it does not establish the investigation’s current status, prove current compliance or tell an individual user why a particular check is appearing now.

The wider issue is not limited to one platform. Ofcom reported in 2025 that 8% of UK children aged 8–14 had visited an online porn site or app in a month, including around 3% of children aged 8–9. Those figures are about online pornography generally, not OnlyFans specifically. Ofcom’s 2025 user guide also said 80% of adults supported age checks on online pornography sites.
