The High Court ruled in July 2025 that the estate owed £740 million. HPE reported a total judgment of about $1.24 billion in March 2026, including interest and currency effects. A limited appeal remains underway.
Why HPE sued Mike Lynch
The dispute grew out of HP’s 2011 acquisition of Autonomy, the software company Lynch founded. In 2015, four HPE subsidiaries brought UK civil proceedings against Lynch and former Autonomy finance director Sushovan Hussain. HPE described the claims as involving alleged breaches of fiduciary duties and improper transactions and accounting practices before and in connection with the acquisition.
In January 2022, the High Court found for the claimants on substantially all claims and dismissed Lynch’s counterclaim, according to HPE’s later filing. The court dealt with liability first and damages separately. A two-week damages trial followed in February 2024.
What the $4 billion figure means
The claimants sought $4 billion in losses during the damages phase. That was the amount they asked to recover, not the court’s final award. In September 2024, while the damages decision was still pending, HPE said: “It is HPE’s intention to follow the proceedings through to their conclusion,” as reported by ITV News Anglia.

How the award changed
| Date | Amount or development | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| February 2024 | $4 billion sought | The claimants’ requested recovery in the damages proceedings, as reported by HPE in its filing for the nine months ended July 31, 2026. |
| July 22, 2025 | £740 million | The High Court’s quantum ruling on the amount owed by Lynch’s estate. The official case page identifies the ruling as Autonomy Corporation and others v Lynch and another, [2025] EWHC 1877 (Ch), before Mr Justice Hildyard: Courts and Tribunals Judiciary. |
| March 24, 2026 | About $1.24 billion | HPE’s reported total judgment against the estate after interest and currency effects. HPE said the calculation included an approximately $145 million offset for sums previously recovered; attorneys’ fees were excluded. |
The figures are from different stages of the case and are denominated in different currencies. The $1.24 billion figure is HPE’s report of the later judgment, not a fresh statement that the claimants sought $4 billion. HPE’s filing does not establish that the judgment has been paid in full.
What remains in the appeal
HPE’s filing for the nine months ended July 31, 2026 says that on August 25, 2026, the Court of Appeal denied permission on fourteen of the estate’s eighteen requested issues. The remaining issues primarily concern how damages were calculated and the currency of the award. This is a limited appeal, not a final appellate ruling on those remaining points.

The official January 2022 liability judgment summary and the later quantum ruling address the UK civil case. They should not be conflated with the separate US criminal case: a criminal acquittal does not itself decide the civil damages judgment.

HPE says its 2015 separation agreement with HP Inc. requires the two companies to share any recovery equally. HPE is the claimant identified in its current filing; “Hewlett Packard” can be ambiguous because HP Inc. and Hewlett Packard Enterprise are separate companies.
Rank #3
The High Court record names Jeremy Vaughan Sandelson as administrator of Lynch’s estate. HPE’s filing describes the judgment as against the Lynch Estate. The sources cited here do not establish a final attorneys’ fees amount, full payment, or the eventual outcome of the remaining appeal issues.
