The right choice depends on your S/4HANA release, model, processing mode, and whether the variants must be stocked, planned, manufactured, or sold.
Choose the creation route
| Need | Documented route | Key conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Create multiple variants from combinations | Variant Matrix UI in Manage Product Master | Configurable product with relevant characteristics and a class assignment of type 300; matrix supports CHAR and NUM characteristics. The 2025 FPS01 documentation states up to 2,000 possible combinations and up to 999 selected variants. |
| Create one variant | Create a variant using a configuration profile in the Variant Configuration Modeling app | The 2025 FPS01 workflow specifies Advanced Variant Configuration. |
| Integrate configuration or product-master creation | Use the appropriate SAP service or API | Prerequisites and payloads differ by API; these are integration paths, not interchangeable UI shortcuts. |
These are documented capabilities, not a guarantee that a system can create a given number of records in one save. SAP Help content varies by release, app, and configuration mode. Confirm your installed release and follow its matching instructions. The 2025 FPS01 pages are labeled February 2026; the cross-check documentation is labeled 2023 Latest. See SAP Help Portal for release-specific product master guidance.
Prepare the configurable product and model
Variants depend on a model that defines which feature values are possible. SAP describes a configurable product as using characteristics assigned through a class; a configuration profile connects the class to the configurable object and sets central configuration details. A super BOM and super task list can cover components and operations across variants, while dependencies determine what applies to a particular configuration. See SAP Help Portal guidance on configurable products.
- Confirm the target S/4HANA release and that Manage Product Master and Variant Matrix UI are available.
- Prepare the product’s characteristics, class, and configuration model.
- Assign the relevant variant class, class type 300, to the configurable product for the matrix workflow.
- For an individual variant, create the configuration profile using the workflow documented for your release and model type.
Classic LO-VC documentation adds older material-master specifics: the configurable material needs its configurable indicator selected, and the material type must permit the Classification view in customizing. SAP identifies KMAT as the standard material type configured for this purpose. Those instructions refer to SAP ERP 6.0 EHP8; do not substitute them blindly for a current S/4HANA app workflow. See SAP ERP Help Portal documentation.

Create multiple variants with the Variant Matrix UI
- In the Manage Product Master app, create or open the configurable product using the Variant Matrix UI flow.
- Select the characteristic combinations you actually need. Use value selection to reduce the matrix rather than selecting every possible combination.
- Keep the selection within the documented application limits: the 2025 FPS01 documentation supports up to 2,000 possible combinations, with up to 999 variants selectable. The matrix supports characteristics of type CHAR and NUM.
- Save, then validate the resulting records and characteristic assignments against your organization’s master-data controls.
The post-save checks are not a universal SAP checklist; define them for your local governance and downstream process. SAP documents this UI as the mass-creation path, but does not establish a measured time saving or guarantee that every system configuration can create the documented maximum in one operation. See SAP’s 2025 FPS01 Product Master documentation.
Create a single variant
- Create and save the configurable product without using the Variant Matrix UI.
- Create its configuration profile in the Variant Configuration Modeling app.
- Create a variant and enter the configurable product in the Cross-Plant Configurable Product (SATNR) field.
- Set Processing Mode to Advanced Variant Configuration, then save.
SAP’s 2025 FPS01 individual-creation instructions specify Advanced Variant Configuration. In contrast, the 2025 mass-creation matrix workflow defaults the variant processing mode to Classic. These modes and modeling steps are not interchangeable by assumption; use the documentation for your release and model. See SAP Product Master documentation.
Account for stocking, planning, production, and sales
A material variant is a separate material master record linked to a configurable material. SAP’s 2025 FPS01 PP/DS instructions require the configurable material and its configuration profile to exist first. If a variant will be used in planning and production orders, SAP says a production version is also required. See SAP PP/DS documentation.
Older SAP ERP instructions distinguish additional operational needs: plant-level maintenance is needed for in-house manufacture so BOMs and routings can be determined; a cross-plant variant can be used in Purchasing but is not supported in Sales; sales-order use requires sales data for the variant. Verify these points against the target release and process before applying them. See SAP ERP Help Portal documentation.

When an API is the better fit
SAP’s Variant Configuration service exposes ERP or S/4HANA configuration capability to front-office applications through APIs. The product model must be available in knowledge-base format generated from the backend product-modeling environment. This is an integration route for applications that need configuration capability, not simply a faster UI method for every master-data creation task. See SAP Variant Configuration service documentation.
SAP’s Product Master API describes creating a reference or configurable product first, then sending variant data in a second payload; the service creates a default configuration profile if one was not created manually. The Business Solution Order OData V4 API covers a different entity: its variant configuration creation uses a deep insert with related instance, characteristic, and assigned-value entities. Match the API to the use case and release rather than treating the payload models as equivalent. See SAP Product Master API documentation and SAP Business Solution Order OData V4 API documentation.
Quick Recap
Best Value
Make the choice against your requirements
- One or many: use the profile-based route for an individual variant, or evaluate the matrix when selecting multiple combinations.
- Release and app availability: verify that the documented app and workflow exist in your installed system.
- Processing mode: account for the distinction between the individual route’s Advanced Variant Configuration setting and the matrix route’s Classic default.
- Model size and type: check characteristic types and trim combinations to the business-valid set.
- Downstream use: establish whether each variant needs planning, production, purchasing, or sales data.
- Interface: choose an API when another application must consume configuration or create product-master data, and confirm its specific model and payload prerequisites.
