USDA’s January 2026 crop and supply estimates pointed to a record-large U.S. corn crop and higher-than-expected 2025/26 ending stocks. Grower and ethanol groups warned that the added supply could intensify pressure on corn prices and farm finances, and urged policymakers to expand markets. Those price warnings and estimates of policy effects are stakeholder views—not USDA forecasts.
What USDA reported about the 2025 corn crop
The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship reported that the 2025 U.S. corn crop set a production record at 17.0 billion bushels, with a record national yield of 186.5 bushels per acre. Iowa produced 2.77 billion bushels. These are annual crop figures reported on January 12, 2026; they do not describe later revisions or the current balance sheet.
A January 12 recap of USDA’s report said the agency raised its estimate of 2025/26 U.S. corn ending stocks from the previous month and placed it above trade expectations. Ending stocks are the estimated supply remaining at the close of a marketing year. They are distinct from production: a large harvest can add to stocks, but stocks also reflect beginning inventories, imports, domestic use, and exports.
Production and stocks are not prices. The report established a larger supply outlook; the warnings that this would worsen prices and farm finances came from industry groups and officials, not from a USDA price forecast in the cited recap.

Why the supply news could matter to growers
When more corn is available relative to demand, buyers may have less reason to bid aggressively, putting downward pressure on prices. The effect on an individual farm depends on its production costs, yields, contracts, storage, debt, and marketing decisions. The January report recap does not establish a specific price decline or quantify the effect on farm income.
Iowa Agriculture Secretary Mike Naig pointed to high input costs and low commodity prices as factors tightening farm margins. He argued that strong domestic demand, reliable export markets, and predictable policy are important to farmers and Iowa’s agricultural economy. Those are his assessment and policy priorities, rather than findings from the crop estimate itself.

What grower and ethanol groups urged policymakers to do
National Corn Growers Association: expand long-term markets
The National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) called the supply outlook alarming and warned that a surplus could further pressure prices and growers’ finances. NCGA President Jed Bower said the sector needed long-term market solutions quickly, and the association identified India, Vietnam, and Kenya as strategically important markets.
NCGA backed nationwide, year-round access to E15, gasoline containing up to 15% ethanol. It estimated that full implementation could add 2.4 billion bushels of annual corn demand. That is NCGA’s projection of a policy’s potential impact, not a USDA estimate or a guaranteed outcome.

Renewable Fuels Association: broaden ethanol access
The Renewable Fuels Association (RFA), representing the ethanol industry, also called for year-round E15 and other regulatory changes it said would expand ethanol and corn demand. RFA estimated that nationwide, year-round E15 could eventually add more than 2 billion bushels of demand for corn and sorghum, and that consumers could save 10–30 cents per gallon. Both figures are RFA estimates; the cited release does not make them USDA findings or guaranteed results.
Iowa Agriculture: support farm margins and trade
Naig called for a farm bill, nationwide year-round E15, robust Renewable Fuel Standard volumes, and trade agreements. His appeal connected the large crop with the need for demand and policy stability, but it represents the Iowa agriculture secretary’s policy position.

- Hybrid Variety: Peaches & Cream Sweet Corn is a hybrid, sugary-enhanced (SE) bicolor variety known for its combination of yellow and white kernels, offering a dual flavor experience in each bite.
- Early Maturity: This corn variety matures relatively early, with some sources indicating a harvest time around 80 to 90 days after planting, making it suitable for regions with shorter growing seasons.
- Planting Tips: For optimal pollination and yield, plant in blocks rather than single rows, ensuring at least four rows for proper cross-pollination. Seeds should be planted when soil temperatures reach 60°F or above for good germination.
- Flavor and Texture: Noted for its sweetness and tenderness, Peaches & Cream corn is praised for its fine texture and rich flavor, which can be enjoyed fresh, frozen, or cooked, making it versatile for various culinary uses.
- Quality: All Sweet Corn seeds packaged by Seed Needs are intended for the current and the following growing seasons. All seeds are stored in a temperature controlled facility that is free of significant amounts of moisture.
How to read the groups’ demand estimates
The NCGA and RFA figures are not directly interchangeable: NCGA cited additional corn demand at full implementation, while RFA cited eventual additional demand for both corn and sorghum. Both describe projected effects of expanded E15 access, not observed demand from the January USDA report. The cited statements do not provide a common set of assumptions for comparing the estimates, so they should be treated as separate advocacy estimates rather than combined or presented as a single forecast.
For growers assessing their own finances, the report’s national production and stocks estimates are context—not a farm-level price target. Local basis, contract terms, storage costs, input expenses, and cash-flow needs can all affect what a national supply outlook means for an individual operation.
