On March 31, 2023, Groupon appointed board member Dusan Senkypl interim CEO, effective immediately. He was to lead the company from the Czech Republic. The “99.4%” figure in the headline described a historical comparison of Groupon’s market capitalization—not its current value: TechCrunch reported $17.8 billion at the company’s 2011 public-market debut and $103 million on March 31, 2023.
What Groupon announced
TechCrunch reported that Senkypl replaced Kedar Deshpande, who had been CEO for 15 months. Deshpande was expected to remain for 60 days to assist with the transition. Senkypl’s appointment took effect immediately, and he was to run Groupon from the Czech Republic. These are details from the March 2023 announcement, not confirmation of Groupon’s leadership today.

Why the 99.4% figure needs context
The percentage compared two market-capitalization figures reported by TechCrunch: $17.8 billion at Groupon’s 2011 public-market debut and $103 million on March 31, 2023. It is a historical comparison between those dates, not a measure of the company’s current market capitalization, stock-price change, revenue, or enterprise value.

Market capitalization is the market value of a company’s outstanding shares at a given time. Comparing the two figures illustrates how sharply the company’s public-market valuation had fallen by March 2023, but it does not explain the causes by itself.

Why the incoming CEO was based in the Czech Republic
Senkypl was a co-founder of Prague-based Pale Fire Capital, which TechCrunch described as Groupon’s largest shareholder at the time. The report said an activist dispute in the prior year had resulted in Pale Fire obtaining two seats on Groupon’s board; Senkypl held one of them. His investor and director connections help explain the Czech Republic detail in the announcement, but the reported facts do not establish that activism alone caused his appointment.
TechCrunch also reported that Pale Fire had said in November it was helping Groupon rebuild its technology team, starting with a CTO appointment. Groupon chairman Ted Leonsis described Senkypl’s board involvement this way: “Since he joined the Board, Dusan has been very engaged as a director, providing important oversight on Groupon’s strategy and strengths and helping the company identify areas in need of improvement.”

The challenges surrounding the leadership change
In its March 2023 account, TechCrunch situated the appointment amid restructuring and business difficulties. It reported that Groupon had cut about 1,000 employees—roughly 30% of its workforce—in two rounds, in August 2022 and January 2023. The article also described stagnation in Groupon’s core model, difficulty diversifying, declining revenue, ongoing losses, and competition from platforms serving customers looking for experiences and services. Those descriptions reflect the company’s circumstances as reported then, not an assessment of its present condition.
Senkypl presented a turnaround case based on Groupon’s customer reach and local inventory. In a statement reproduced by TechCrunch, he said: “With unique local inventory, over 14 million active local customers and millions of visitor sessions per month, Groupon has valuable assets capable of fueling significant growth when paired with operational excellence.” The customer and visitor numbers were figures Senkypl cited in March 2023; they were not independently verified current metrics.

He also said: “I have a deep appreciation for the dedication that has gone into building this company and am honored to guide Groupon through its transformation and turnaround.” The statement expressed the incoming interim CEO’s aim; it was not evidence that a turnaround had already occurred.

The appointment marked a leadership change at a company facing reported operational and financial pressure, with a major shareholder’s co-founder moving from the board into the interim CEO role. The valuation comparison conveys the scale of Groupon’s historical market-cap decline through March 2023. Neither the appointment nor the 99.4% statistic establishes what Groupon is worth or who leads it now; the cited report does not provide current leadership or valuation information as of October 8, 2026.
