1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou can donate Bitcoin by using a charity’s official cryptocurrency donation page, selecting BTC, and following the portal’s payment instructions. Before sending, confirm the charity and Bitcoin option on its own website; then save the transaction details and acknowledgment. Whether the gift qualifies for a tax deduction depends on your circumstances and, in the United States, specific federal rules.
How do you donate Bitcoin?
- Choose a charity and verify it. Check the organization’s mission and credibility independently. For a possible U.S. federal deduction, confirm that it is a qualified organization; a crypto donation page alone does not establish deductibility. The IRS explains qualified organizations in Publication 526.
- Go to the charity’s official website. Navigate to its current cryptocurrency donation page yourself and confirm that Bitcoin (BTC) is listed. Supported coins and payment portals can change.
- Follow the portal’s current instructions. Select BTC and enter the amount. Complete the requested contact or identity fields, or select an anonymity option if offered. Follow the destination and transfer instructions shown by the official portal.
- Check the payment details before sending. Do not use a wallet address supplied in an unsolicited message or copied from a search snippet. Use the instructions presented by the charity’s official donation portal.
- Save your records. Keep the confirmation, transaction identifier, date, BTC amount, the dollar value and how it was determined, and any acknowledgment from the charity. The IRS treats digital assets donated to charity as noncash contributions, and documentation requirements depend on the amount and circumstances.
- Check tax requirements before filing. If you plan to claim a U.S. deduction, review the applicable acknowledgment, appraisal, and filing rules below; consult a tax professional about your situation.
What should you check before choosing a donation route?
Charity pages differ in the assets they accept, the portal or processor they use, whether they offer anonymity, how receipts are delivered, and whether they say they retain or deploy donated BTC. Compare those details on the charity’s own current page. The examples below illustrate published routes; they are not endorsements or a complete directory.
| Organization | Published BTC route and details |
|---|---|
| USO | Its page says it accepts Bitcoin and describes selecting a cryptocurrency and amount, entering contact details or choosing anonymous giving, and making the gift. It names The Giving Block and Gemini Trust Exchange as processors. An automatically generated receipt may be emailed after a certain number of blockchain confirmations. USO’s crypto donation page |
| CARE | Its page directs donors to a donation widget, where they can check the live list of accepted currencies. It names The Giving Block and Endaoment and says an email is needed for a tax receipt. CARE’s cryptocurrency page |
| Save the Children | Its page says anonymous Bitcoin giving is possible, but an email is needed for a tax receipt. It says its Bitcoin Fund holds and deploys BTC directly, including for humanitarian response and cash-assistance work. Save the Children’s cryptocurrency page |
| American Cancer Society | Its page says it accepts direct donations of Bitcoin and supported cryptocurrencies through The Giving Block, built on its Gemini exchange account. American Cancer Society’s cryptocurrency page |
These pages do not establish a comparable fee schedule, so check the portal’s terms before confirming a gift. Do not assume the charity will hold BTC rather than convert it unless its current information says so.
Can you donate Bitcoin anonymously?
Sometimes, depending on the charity’s current portal. USO says donors can choose anonymous giving; Save the Children also describes anonymous Bitcoin donations. CARE’s page says an email is needed for a tax receipt, and Save the Children says the same. Check what “anonymous” means on the specific portal and what information it still requires. If you need a receipt, provide the details required to receive one and retain the confirmation.

Is donating Bitcoin tax deductible?
Not automatically. U.S. federal tax treatment depends on whether the recipient is a qualified organization, your own tax situation, and the applicable valuation, substantiation, and reporting rules. The rules below are U.S.-specific; donors elsewhere should consult their local tax authority and the charity.
How holding period affects a U.S. federal deduction
In IRS digital-asset FAQ 78, added December 15, 2025, the IRS says a charitable deduction for digital assets held more than one year is generally the asset’s fair market value at the time of donation, excluding transfer costs. If held for one year or less, the deduction is generally the lesser of the asset’s basis or its fair market value, also excluding transfer costs. These are general rules, not a guarantee that a particular donor can claim a deduction. See the IRS digital-asset FAQs.

When an appraisal and acknowledgment may be required
The IRS says a qualified appraisal is required when the claimed deduction for donated digital assets is more than $5,000. If the claimed deduction is more than $500,000, a copy of the appraisal must be attached to the return. An exchange price or charity receipt does not replace an appraisal when one is required. For a claimed deduction of $250 or more, the donor must obtain a contemporaneous written acknowledgment; the charity can provide it. When a donor claims more than $5,000 and presents Form 8283 for signature, the charity generally must sign to acknowledge receipt. Its signature does not mean it agrees with the appraised value. Review the IRS digital-asset FAQs and Publication 526 for details.
