For South African Grade 12 learners, Paper 1 preparation means practising the concepts and question styles in the relevant DBE examination materials—not relying on a predicted topic list. Strategic management is a useful focus: the November 2025 DBE marking guide treats it as a sequence from analysis through implementation and evaluation. Use a dated paper with its matching memorandum, and follow that session’s specific instructions.
What is Grade 12 Business Studies Paper 1?
Paper 1 is part of the South African Grade 12 Business Studies assessment in the Department of Basic Education (DBE) CAPS context. For current syllabus coverage, consult the DBE’s examination guidelines rather than assuming that a past paper is a complete checklist. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) lists “Gr 12 Business Studies: Examination Guidelines,” credits the DBE, and records a revision date of 04 June 2026: WCED Grade 12 Business Studies resources. The listing identifies a digital document; check the downloadable guideline itself for the applicable scope.
Past papers are dated examples, not forecasts. The DBE’s November 2025 Paper 1 marking guide includes business environments, business operations, and miscellaneous topics. Its May/June 2025 guide is a separate session with its own questions and allocations. Neither establishes what a later paper will contain.
What is the strategic management process?
The November 2025 DBE Paper 1 marking guide accepts an organized process in which analysis informs the choice of strategy, and plans are then put into action, assessed, and adjusted. For revision, learn the sequence and be ready to connect each stage to facts in a question’s scenario.
#1 Best Overall
- Great extension activities for science and biology
- Correlated to standards
- Comprehensive biology vocabulary study
- Fascinating true-to-life illustrations
- Set direction: establish a vision or mission, or define a measurable objective.
- Analyse the situation: scan the environment using an appropriate tool, such as SWOT, PESTLE, or Porter’s Five Forces.
- Formulate strategies: choose responses that fit the analysis and the objective.
- Plan actions: specify what must be done, by when, and with which resources.
- Implement: carry out the chosen actions.
- Monitor and evaluate: check progress and assess whether the strategy is working.
- Take corrective action: adjust the plan or implementation in response to the evaluation.
These stages should make sense as a chain: an environmental finding helps justify a strategic choice; an action plan turns that choice into work; monitoring shows whether the intended result is being achieved. Avoid listing labels without showing how they relate to the question.
How the analysis tools differ
- SWOT organizes internal strengths and weaknesses alongside external opportunities and threats.
- PESTLE structures analysis of macro-environmental factors.
- Porter’s Five Forces examines competitive pressures.
The November 2025 marking guide names these as accepted examples of analysis tools. The brief descriptions above are explanatory framing, not quoted official definitions; confirm detailed terminology against the current DBE guideline or CAPS material.

How should I answer a strategic-management question?
Use the question’s command word and scenario details to shape each point. A memorized definition may show knowledge, but an answer that links a concept to the facts given is better positioned to address application requirements.
- Identify the task: note whether the question asks you to name, explain, discuss, recommend, or evaluate something.
- Mark the scenario: underline the facts that point to an internal issue, an external condition, an objective, or a business response.
- Build the answer around the evidence: state the relevant concept, explain it, and make the connection to the scenario explicit.
- Respect the requested format: use the structure and number of points the question asks for, and check the mark allocation as a guide to the expected depth.
- Check the memo: compare with the marking guide for that exact year and session, then rewrite missed points with the scenario link made clear.
How do I practise with past papers and memoranda?
- Choose a Paper 1 and note its session and year before you begin.
- Attempt the relevant question under exam conditions, without consulting the memorandum.
- Underline command words and scenario facts, then answer in the structure requested.
- Mark your response against the matching official DBE marking guide, not a memo from another session.
- Rewrite any answer that missed a concept, explanation, or application link.
The May/June 2025 DBE Paper 1 marking guide is a concrete example of why session details matter: Question 2 was allocated 40 marks, and item 2.7 was allocated six marks. Those figures describe that paper only; they are not a template or guarantee for a later exam. The November 2025 guide likewise has its own section layout and allocations.

Why do exam instructions vary between papers?
Use the directions printed for the particular question and session you are practising. For example, the DBE’s November 2025 marking guide states: “The candidate forfeits marks for layout if the words INTRODUCTION and CONCLUSION are not stated.” It also says those headings must be supported with an explanation. Treat that as an instruction from that paper’s marking guide, rather than assuming the same layout rule applies to every Business Studies question or session.

Start with official curriculum and examination materials, then select supplementary material that clearly matches your grade, subject, paper, and syllabus version. WCED lists a Via Afrika Grade 12 Business Studies study-guide PDF alongside its examination resources: WCED Grade 12 Business Studies resources.
