The result is widely described as a record, but the claim needs a category: it was not the highest price ever paid for a car at auction. The lot was also a future-build opportunity, not a finished car ready for immediate delivery.
How much did the Gordon Murray S1 LM sell for?
RM Sotheby’s recorded the sale of S1 LM Chassis #1, nicknamed “The Special One,” at $20,630,000. The auction took place during Formula 1 week at the amfAR event at Wynn Las Vegas. The headline figure of $20.6 million is a rounded version of that exact result. RM Sotheby’s sale record
Gordon Murray Special Vehicles called the result a world record, and RM Sotheby’s characterized it as a defining modern milestone. The result should not be presented as the most expensive car auction sale overall: it refers to the S1 LM’s sale and the record category described by the maker, rather than every vehicle ever sold at auction.
What did the winning bidder buy?
The lot was a chance to participate in the car’s specification and development with Gordon Murray Special Vehicles. The auction terms said delivery would follow completion of the build, so the $20.63 million purchase was not for an immediately deliverable, finished car.

RM Sotheby’s described the process as collaboration with Gordon Murray and Dario Franchitti, Gordon Murray Group’s Executive Product and Brand Director. The auction lot also discussed a possible U.S. Show or Display import route. Import compliance, duties, and taxes were the buyer’s responsibility under those specific lot terms; those conditions should not be assumed to apply to other vehicles or buyers.
The winning bidder was also to receive a 500-page monograph containing photographs, specifications, sketches, and notes from Gordon Murray’s notebook. The available sale information does not establish that the book is sold separately.

What is the S1 LM?
The S1 LM is the first model from Gordon Murray Special Vehicles, a division focused on highly exclusive, driver-focused cars. The model was created to mark 30 years since the McLaren F1 GTR won the 1995 Le Mans 24 Hours and to echo the five McLaren F1 LMs built to commemorate that victory.
Gordon Murray Special Vehicles announced a run of five S1 LMs. The S1 LM is a distinct bespoke model, not a McLaren product. Its connection to the F1 LM is commemorative and design-led; it is not another McLaren F1 LM.

What are the S1 LM’s specifications?
Official auction material and the manufacturer’s release describe a naturally aspirated 4.3-liter Cosworth V-12 and a six-speed manual transmission. Their power figures use different units and wording, so they should be kept distinct rather than silently converted.

|---|---|---|
| Engine | 4.3-liter naturally aspirated Cosworth V-12 | RM Sotheby’s 2025 auction description |

These are the maker’s and auction house’s stated specifications, not independent test measurements. They describe the S1 LM; they do not establish comparative road-test performance against another car.

Who owns the five S1 LMs?
After the sale, Gordon Murray Special Vehicles said all five S1 LMs had been purchased by one individual. The company did not disclose ownership details for the other four chassis. The official statements cited here do not identify the purchaser or establish that any of the remaining cars have since been resold.
Gordon Murray Automotive’s 2026 press page retrospectively described the S1 LM as having sold for $20.6 million “last year” and said every programme it had announced to that point was fully sold out. That is a dated statement about the programmes announced by then, not a promise of future availability.

Why the auction result matters to buyers
The price bought more than a place in a five-car production run: the lot included a development and specification process with the car’s creator, plus the completed build and the accompanying monograph. That combination helps explain why this was a bespoke collector-car transaction rather than a straightforward purchase of a finished production vehicle.
For anyone assessing the result as a financial benchmark, its scope matters. One sale does not establish the market value of other S1 LMs or prove how the car compares with all new-car auction sales. The cited official sources provide the lot result and production details, but no like-for-like market dataset.
