Go First is no longer operating: it stopped flying in May 2023, entered insolvency proceedings, and was ordered into liquidation in January 2025. The tribunal dismissed challenges to liquidation in April 2025. Passengers seeking money back should check the airline’s live insolvency notices and submit any claim through the current process; the National Company Law Tribunal’s 2023 advisory directed passengers to claim through the Resolution Professional, but it does not guarantee repayment.
What happened to Go First?
Go First, formerly Go Airlines (India), stopped operations in 2023. The company filed a voluntary insolvency application on 2 May 2023 under Section 10 of India’s Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code. The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) admitted it to the corporate insolvency resolution process on 10 May 2023. The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal’s later account says the airline had begun defaulting on payments to vendors and aircraft lessors in 2022, when 34% of its aircraft were grounded. The NCLAT judgment recounts this history.
The insolvency process initially sought a resolution that could preserve the company as a going concern. That did not produce a compliant plan: after the creditors’ committee found no compliant resolution plan, the NCLT ordered liquidation on 20 January 2025. On 4 April 2025, the NCLAT dismissed appeals challenging that order. It noted that eligible applicants could submit a compromise or arrangement scheme under the applicable liquidation regulations; that procedural possibility is not evidence that a revival plan has been approved.

How can passengers pursue a refund?
There are two separate issues: Go First’s refund direction when flights were cancelled or suspended, and a passenger’s claim within the insolvency process. In May 2023, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) directed Go First to process refunds for passengers with cancelled or suspended bookings, according to India Today’s contemporaneous report. That direction does not establish that every passenger received a refund or determine what a passenger may recover in liquidation.
On 3 July 2023, the NCLT’s advisory told passengers: “Passengers are advised to make a claim before the RP as per law.” It directed refund and related claims to the Resolution Professional (RP), and told passengers not to contact NCLT officials for refunds. The advisory predates liquidation, so do not assume its old contact details or instructions are still current. - Use the current notice’s instructions to identify the appropriate claim route and recipient; do not rely on contact details copied from the 2023 advisory without checking them against current notices.
- Keep booking confirmations, payment records, cancellation or suspension notices, and relevant correspondence together. This is practical record-keeping advice, not a list of documents specified by the NCLT advisory.
No recovery amount, timetable, claim priority, or likely percentage of repayment is established in the cited notices. Filing or having filed a claim is not a promise of a refund.
Why were Go First’s aircraft grounded, and why did lessors seek them back?
The insolvency record identifies two connected problems: many aircraft were already grounded, and the airline faced defaults to aircraft lessors as well as vendors. The NCLAT judgment says 34% of Go First’s aircraft were grounded in 2022. Lessors then pursued deregistration and the return or export of leased aircraft, while contesting the effect of the insolvency moratorium on their aircraft.

In April 2024, the Delhi High Court directed the regulator to process deregistration of the leased fleet. Business Standard reported that deregistration was completed by early May 2024. These proceedings concerned lessors’ ability to recover their aircraft; they do not, on their own, establish that the aircraft were all returned on a particular date or that Go First could have resumed operations if they had remained available.

The dispute illustrates why aircraft leases matter in an airline insolvency. An airline needs access to aircraft to operate, while lessors have contractual and legal interests in recovering aircraft when payments fail. Insolvency proceedings may aim to preserve a business long enough for a resolution, but disputes over whether leased assets can be deregistered and returned can complicate that effort. In Go First’s case, the process ended in liquidation rather than an approved resolution plan.

No verified market-share, fare, or passenger-volume figure is established in the sources cited here, so claims that Go First’s exit caused a specified market-wide change would go beyond the available evidence.
