H. Vasanthakumar, the Congress Lok Sabha MP for Kanyakumari and founder of Vasanth & Co, died in Chennai on August 28, 2020, aged 70, after contracting COVID-19. His career connected retail entrepreneurship, Tamil media and elected public service: he began as a salesperson, opened his first shop in 1978, served twice as an MLA and entered the Lok Sabha in 2019.
How did H. Vasanthakumar die?
Vasanthakumar was admitted to Apollo Hospitals in Chennai on August 10, 2020, after contracting COVID-19. He was treated for severe COVID pneumonia and died on August 28. Apollo Hospitals said his condition deteriorated due to COVID complications despite active medical measures, as reported by India Today. He was 70.
How did he build Vasanth & Co?
From sales work to his first shop
Born in Agastheeswaram in present-day Kanyakumari district on April 14, 1950, Vasanthakumar moved to Chennai in 1971 after completing a Tamil degree. He worked as a salesperson at VGP, where he learned retail and installment sales.
In 1978, he opened his first shop on South Usman Road. In an interview with DT Next, he recalled that a customer helped him set up the shop. “That’s when I knew it was time to do something on my own,” he said. The early business also involved door-to-door selling and hire-purchase payments.

A retailer focused on household goods
Vasanth & Co grew into a major Tamil Nadu retailer of consumer electronics and home appliances. Earlier customers could buy goods such as radios, fans and televisions through smaller monthly payments, according to The Indian Express. Those historical hire-purchase arrangements should not be confused with any particular current financing offer or terms.
What roles did he hold in politics?
Vasanthakumar represented Nanguneri in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly in two periods: 2006–2011 and 2016–2019. In 2019, he won the Kanyakumari Lok Sabha seat, defeating BJP candidate Pon Radhakrishnan and becoming a first-time MP. He held the parliamentary seat until his death in 2020.

During his short Lok Sabha tenure, PRS Legislative Research records 88% attendance, participation in 40 debates and 104 questions. Its profile also notes issues he raised, including transport links, local infrastructure and requests concerning people from Iran. These figures describe recorded activity during 2019–2020; they do not, on their own, measure legislative impact or provide a fair comparison with MPs who served a full term. See the PRS profile.
What was his connection to Tamil media?
Vasanthakumar also founded Vasanth TV, a Tamil satellite channel. That work added a media role to his retail and political careers, rather than replacing either one. Contemporaneous reporting describes his work across retail, media and politics, but does not establish a basis for ranking one strand as his most important legacy.

How did his career bring business and public service together?
His path ran from selling goods and learning installment retail to building a regional chain, then to representing Nanguneri in the Assembly and Kanyakumari in Parliament. The available parliamentary record offers specific examples of constituency and policy issues he raised, while his own account of starting the South Usman Road shop documents the early risks and initiative behind his business. Together with the founding of Vasanth TV, these are distinct parts of a public life that cannot be reduced to commercial success alone.
