The “grain prices hitting lowest levels since 2020” headline describes a July 2024 episode, not the market in October 2026. It referred to a futures-based index that had fallen to its lowest level since December 2020. The latest monthly data available as of October 8, 2026, point the other way: global wheat and maize prices rose in September, with both reaching multi-year highs.
That distinction matters to anyone following food costs, farm income, or commodity markets: a futures index, a global price index, and the cash price available to a farmer are different measures.
What the “lowest since 2020” headline meant
Farm Policy News summarized Bloomberg reporting on July 10, 2024, when the Bloomberg Grains Subindex was down 17% year to date and at its lowest level since December 2020. The index tracks Chicago and Kansas futures for corn, soybeans, and wheat; it is not a measure of every grain, local cash bid, or the price consumers pay for food. Farm Policy News, July 10, 2024
The 2024 report attributed the decline to improved U.S. row-crop weather and stronger yield expectations, which encouraged selling; weak global demand and lagging U.S. exports; competition from Brazil in soybean exports; and large corn stocks held by U.S. farmers. Those explanations describe that period, not the causes of subsequent price changes.

FAO’s monthly release published October 2 reported that its Cereal Price Index averaged 122.8 points in September 2026, up 5.1% from August and 17.2% from September 2025. This is a global index observation, not a U.S. farmgate price or a specific futures contract. FAO, October 2, 2026

USDA’s September outlook forecast 2026/27 global wheat trade 6% below the previous year’s record. It cited Black Sea transit complications as a factor supporting higher prices, while larger harvests in some North African and Middle Eastern importing countries were expected to reduce import needs. USDA’s September 2026/27 outlook cut projected global coarse-grain production by 5.1 million metric tons for the month, mainly because of a 5.4-million-ton reduction for U.S. corn and a 0.3-million-ton reduction for U.S. sorghum. Projected global ending stocks were lowered by 1.6 million metric tons. Why a headline price may not match a local grain price
A benchmark futures price is not the same as a local cash bid. The cash price a producer can receive depends in part on basis—the difference between a local cash price and a relevant futures benchmark—as well as location, transport costs, and local supply and demand. A global index likewise aggregates price movements and should not be read as an individual farm’s selling price. For personal-finance decisions, this distinction helps prevent a common misreading: a global cereal index rising or a futures benchmark falling does not by itself tell you how much a local farmer receives or how much a household will pay at the grocery store. Retail food prices reflect additional costs and market stages beyond the grain price.

- Check the date. The 2020-low claim belongs to July 2024; September 2026 data showed increases in the FAO cereal, wheat, and maize measures.
- Identify the measure. Determine whether a report is about a futures index, global price index, local cash bid, or farm price.
- Check the commodity and geography. Wheat, corn/maize, soybeans, and other coarse grains do not share identical supply and trade conditions. A benchmark’s delivery location also matters.
- Separate forecasts from outcomes. USDA’s September projections concern the 2026/27 marketing year and can change as new information arrives.
USDA’s World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) publishes monthly annual supply-and-use forecasts for U.S. and world wheat, rice, coarse grains, and oilseeds. Its schedule listed the October 2026 release for October 9 at noon Eastern—after the October 8 information cutoff used here—so the September outlook is the latest USDA forecast reflected in this article.
