Use the resources below to find EMS papers and practise their accounting sections, then check every paper against your school’s current assessment scope. If you study outside South Africa, follow your own curriculum and school’s requirements.
Where to find Grade 9 EMS papers and accounting practice
South Africa’s Thutong education portal lists Grade 9 EMS assessment resources across accounting, economics, entrepreneurship, labour and other themes. Its Grade 9 EMS assessment bank includes accounting concepts, journals, trial balance, financial statements and ratios, as well as an EMS end-of-year examination resource. Because the bank covers the broader subject, do not assume every item is an accounting-only paper.
The Thutong EMS resource index lists a senior-phase CAPS resource, a Grade 9 EMS end-of-year examination and a Grade 9 resource on posting journals to the general ledger. The individual posting-journals resource page is dated 2010, so treat it as evidence of the skills covered, not confirmation of current assessment policy.
Wamark Bookshelf’s resources page lists Grade 9 June and November accounting exam papers and memos, along with topic exercises and other EMS materials. A listing does not guarantee that each file is available, complete or aligned with your school’s current scope. Check the details before relying on a download.

Check each resource before you study
- Confirm the grade, year and assessment period, such as June or November.
- Check the language and whether a memo or worked answers are included.
- Look at the topic coverage and make sure it matches the accounting work your teacher says will be assessed.
- Prefer your school or provincial education department’s current guidance if a downloaded resource conflicts with it.
What Grade 9 accounting topics should you practise?
Thutong’s Grade 9 resources cover parts of the accounting cycle as well as selected financial statements and ratios. The particular topics on your paper depend on your school’s curriculum and assessment plan.
Transactions, journals and ledger posting
Practise reading transaction information and source documents, deciding which entries belong in the relevant books, and checking that amounts are recorded consistently. Thutong’s resource titled Posting Journals to the General Ledger describes the learning outcome as completing cash and credit transactions for service and retail businesses, using cash receipts and payments journals and debtors’ and creditors’ journals, posting journals to the general ledger, and drawing up a trial balance. The resource page is dated 2010; use it to understand the skills represented, not as proof that the same scope applies at every school today.

- Great extension activities for science and biology
- Correlated to standards
- Comprehensive biology vocabulary study
- Fascinating true-to-life illustrations
Trial balance and financial statements
The Thutong assessment bank lists trial balance work, Income Statement and Balance Sheet concepts and examples, and a Statement of Receipts and Payments. It also includes ratios. Add these topics to your practice only when they appear in your current class scope; a resource-bank listing alone does not establish that every topic will be assessed in your examination.
How to prepare with an exam paper and memo
- Confirm your scope. Ask your teacher which curriculum, term or examination period, and accounting topics apply. Grade 9 paper titles do not identify these details reliably.
- Choose a matching paper. Use a school, provincial or education-portal resource where possible. Check its year, language, paper type and accounting-topic coverage before starting.
- Attempt the paper before opening the memo. Work through the questions as a practice examination and show calculations and entries clearly.
- Mark by tracing the accounting process. Use the memo to find whether an error began with interpreting a source document, classifying a transaction, entering a journal, posting to the ledger or calculating a balance.
- Practise the weak step again. Return to the relevant topic exercise or class notes, then try a fresh question. This is a practical way to review mistakes, not a guarantee of a particular mark improvement.
How to choose a workbook or extra practice resource
A workbook can provide more exercises when you need practice beyond the papers available through school. Wamark’s Grade 9 Cash and Credit Transactions learner-support PDF has sections on source documents, journals, posting to the general ledger and exam-type questions. Its URL indicates a 2019 file path; verify the version and syllabus fit before treating it as current.

Before using any physical workbook or downloadable material, check its curriculum, edition or date, language, included answers and match to your teacher’s scope. The sources listed here establish that relevant practice material exists; they do not establish that a particular workbook is the best option or currently available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep Grade 9 EMS distinct from senior-secondary Accounting
South Africa’s Department of Basic Education Grade 10–12 Accounting curriculum refers to revising Grade 9 content, which distinguishes the senior-secondary subject from the Grade 9 EMS context described here. Do not substitute Grade 10–12 Accounting papers or study guides for Grade 9 EMS papers: the subject level and assessment scope differ. See the Department of Basic Education Accounting CAPS document for Grades 10–12 for that senior-secondary curriculum.
