For U.S. federal income-tax purposes, gross income is a broad starting measure of income before certain adjustments—not just salary and not necessarily every dollar you receive. To estimate it for a period, add the relevant income items for that period, then distinguish the result from adjusted gross income (AGI), taxable income, and take-home pay.

What does gross income mean?

For U.S. federal income-tax purposes, Internal Revenue Code section 61 defines gross income broadly: “Except as otherwise provided in this subtitle, gross income means all income from whatever source derived, including (but not limited to) the following items:” The United States Congress’s 2024 edition of the Internal Revenue Code, section 61, lists compensation, business income, gains from property, interest, rents, royalties, dividends, pensions, and other sources.

The definition is a starting point, not a rule that every receipt is taxable. The law also provides exclusions and special rules. Income may be money, property, or services; the particular item and applicable tax rules determine its treatment. The IRS explains that an amount included in income is generally taxable unless specifically exempted, and that some nontaxable income may still need to be reported (IRS: What is taxable and nontaxable income?).

How to calculate personal gross income

Personal gross income for a period = the sum of relevant income sources for that period. Use amounts on a consistent time basis, and do not add net paycheck deposits to gross earnings. Tax reporting can depend on accounting and receipt rules, so this arithmetic is an estimate rather than a substitute for tax-return instructions.

  1. Choose the period. For an annual estimate, use the tax year. For a monthly estimate, use one month.
  2. List relevant income sources. Include applicable wages and other items such as business income, rental income, interest, or dividends. Whether a receipt belongs in taxable gross income depends on the law and circumstances.
  3. Add amounts on a gross basis. Do not substitute take-home pay for wages before payroll withholding.
  4. Check timing and special rules. The IRS says income may be treated as received when it is made available, even if it has not been collected or deposited. For example, a valid check available before year-end may count in that year. Partnerships may pass tax items through to partners, whose distributive shares may need to be reported whether or not cash was distributed (IRS guidance on taxable and nontaxable income).

Simple hypothetical example

An employee earning $4,000 a month before payroll withholding has annualized gross wages of $48,000 if that pay continues consistently for 12 months ($4,000 × 12). This is only a wage calculation; other income sources could increase total gross income.

IRS example: gross income to AGI

In its AGI explanation, the IRS gives an example with $50,000 in wages, $12,000 in rental income, $8,500 in additional wages from part-time driving, and $500 in bond interest. Those items total $71,000 in gross income. The example then subtracts $250 in educator expenses and $2,500 in student-loan interest—$2,750 in adjustments—to reach $68,250 AGI (IRS: Definition of adjusted gross income, accessed October 8, 2026). These are illustrative figures, not current-year thresholds or a guarantee that every taxpayer can claim those adjustments.

Gross income, AGI, taxable income, and take-home pay

Measure What it means
Gross income For federal individual income-tax purposes, the broad income starting point, subject to statutory exclusions and other rules.
Adjusted gross income (AGI) Gross income minus certain allowed adjustments. The IRS example above shows the calculation; eligibility for an adjustment depends on applicable rules.
Taxable income AGI reduced by the standard deduction or applicable itemized deductions and any other relevant deductions. AGI is not, by itself, the final amount taxed.
Gross pay Pay before payroll withholding and deductions. It may be one component of personal gross income, but it is not necessarily the person’s total income.
Take-home pay The amount deposited or paid after withholding and other paycheck deductions. It is not interchangeable with gross pay or tax gross income.

The IRS says AGI is calculated before the standard or itemized deduction. For current filing details, consult the instructions for the applicable tax year’s Form 1040 and Schedule 1 rather than relying on a line number or adjustment list from a different year (IRS AGI explanation).

Why the meaning changes outside individual federal taxes

Businesses may use terms such as gross income, gross profit, or revenue in accounting and operational reports. Those measures are not automatically the same as an individual’s gross income under section 61, and there is no single business formula established here for all contexts. Check how the particular statement defines its metric before comparing figures.

Likewise, a lender, landlord, benefits program, employer, state tax authority, or foreign tax system may define income for its own purpose. The federal individual-tax definition should not be assumed to control those contexts; use the rules or instructions for the specific application.
