Gerald Ford Net Worth: What His Financial Disclosure Shows

The clearest documented figure is Gerald and Elizabeth Ford’s joint net worth disclosure of $323,489 as of December 31, 1975—not an estimate of Ford’s wealth at death.

The clearest documented figure for Gerald Ford’s wealth is a joint net-worth statement he filed with his wife, Elizabeth, reporting $323,489 as of December 31, 1975. It is a dated disclosure—not a current-dollar estimate, a figure for Ford alone, or a valuation of his estate at death.

What was Gerald Ford’s net worth?

The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum reproduces the Fords’ statement in its 1976 President Ford ’76 Fact Book. The statement reports $324,689 in assets and $1,200 in liabilities, leaving joint net worth of $323,489 on December 31, 1975.

That total belongs to Gerald and Elizabeth Ford together. It should not be described as Gerald Ford’s personal wealth alone, nor presented as a current estimate. It is a historical disclosure with stated valuation limits.

What did the 1975 disclosure include?

Real estate was the largest asset category. The statement’s figures break down as follows:

Category Reported amount Details in the statement
Cash in banks $1,239
Securities $12,973 Included Ford Paint and Varnish Co. debenture bonds, Central Telephone of Illinois stock, and Stein Roe Farnum Balance Fund stock.
Cash value of life insurance $9,901 Combined amount.
U.S. Congressional Retirement Fund $53,701 Reported at contributed cost.
Real estate $212,000 Alexandria residence: $90,000; Vail condominium: $90,000; Grand Rapids rental dwelling: $30,000; one-quarter interest in a Michigan cabin: $2,000.
Furnishings and personal effects $28,000
Automobiles and other vehicles $6,875
Total assets $324,689
Liabilities $1,200 General bills outstanding.
Net worth $323,489 Joint figure for Gerald and Elizabeth Ford, dated December 31, 1975.

How reliable is the figure?

The statement is a contemporaneous financial disclosure, but its property values were not independent appraisals. Robert J. McBain, the Fords’ certified public accountant, wrote in the statement’s notes: “The market values of Real Estate and furnishings were supplied by Congressman Ford and represent his estimate of current values.” McBain also said his office relied on financial information Ford provided, including checkbooks, bank statements, cancelled checks, and deposit slips.

Those notes make the figure useful evidence of what the Fords reported, while also explaining why it should be treated as a disclosed estimate rather than a uniform, independently appraised balance sheet.

Why do later accounts give a much larger figure?

A 1976 TIME report said the disclosed amount had increased by $67,000 since Ford’s nomination for vice president in October 1973. A later 1983 Washington Post column gave a $6.2 million estimate, citing income and interests that included corporate board work, speeches, real estate, and pension income.

The $6.2 million figure is a later press estimate, not another statement prepared on the same basis as the 1975 disclosure. The figures differ in date, source, and method, so they should not be treated as a like-for-like comparison or combined into a precise account of how Ford’s wealth changed.

Is Gerald Ford’s wealth at death known?

The evidence cited here does not establish a reliable net-worth total at Ford’s death or his lifetime peak. The Ford Library’s finding aid for the Gerald R. Ford Personal Finance Papers, 1942–2004 describes financial records covering topics such as taxes, investments, trusts, property, and his post-presidential office. The finding aid identifies records in the collection; it does not state a final wealth figure.
