GE Aerospace and Pratt & Whitney are major aircraft-engine makers, but they do not offer interchangeable portfolios. GE Aerospace spans commercial and military propulsion and has a large services business; Pratt & Whitney is especially associated with its geared-turbofan (GTF) family and the F135 fighter engine. The right comparison depends on the aircraft, engine variant and operating mission—not on a company-wide winner.

How GE Aerospace and Pratt & Whitney differ

General Electric’s aerospace business now operates as GE Aerospace. Both GE Aerospace and Pratt & Whitney serve commercial and military aviation, but their engine lineups overlap only in particular programs. Some prominent products are also joint-venture engines rather than products made by one company alone.

Comparison GE Aerospace Pratt & Whitney
Commercial focus Commercial portfolio includes CF6, GE90, GEnx and CFM LEAP; GE’s filing also identifies GE9X for the Boeing 777X. Produces and services the PW1000G GTF family, alongside engines for business and airline applications.
Military examples F110, F404, F414, T700, T408 and T901. F135, which powers all three F-35 variants.
Distinctive architecture or program Broad portfolio, including LEAP through CFM International and development work under CFM’s RISE program. PW1000G uses a geared-fan architecture.
Business scale and services In 2025, Commercial Engines and Services (CES) was approximately 73% of GE Aerospace revenue; services were 75% of CES revenue. RTX describes Pratt & Whitney producing and servicing its GTF family; a comparable Pratt-only services revenue share is not stated in the cited sources.

Portfolio and segment descriptions are based on the companies’ filings and product pages: GE Aerospace’s 2025 Form 10-K, RTX’s 2025 Form 10-K, and GE’s commercial engine lineup.

Commercial engines: compare aircraft programs, not company names

GE Aerospace’s commercial portfolio

GE’s commercial portfolio covers several aircraft and engine classes. The CF6, GE90 and GEnx are among its established commercial families, while GE’s 2025 filing identifies the GE9X for the Boeing 777X. CFM LEAP is a major narrowbody engine, but it is a CFM International product—not a GE-only engine.

Pratt & Whitney’s GTF family

Pratt & Whitney’s PW1000G GTF family is its headline commercial engine family in the sources cited here. The GTF places a reduction gearbox between the fan and the low-pressure turbine, allowing those components to operate at different speeds. Pratt & Whitney describes the geared arrangement as a means of delivering fuel-efficiency benefits; that is the manufacturer’s characterization, not an independent head-to-head finding. See the company’s GTF product page.

Pratt & Whitney says the GTF can deliver up to 20% lower fuel consumption per trip on the A320neo family compared with prior-generation aircraft. This is a company claim with that specific comparison baseline; it should not be read as a measured advantage over a GE engine in the same aircraft and conditions.

Why the families are not direct substitutes

Engine availability is tied to the aircraft program and its certified engine options. A GE90 for a widebody aircraft, for example, is not a like-for-like alternative to a PW1000G used on a different aircraft family. Even where manufacturers compete for an aircraft program, a meaningful comparison must identify the exact engine variant and match the aircraft, mission, payload and operating conditions.

Technology and fuel-efficiency claims

The most recognizable architectural distinction in this comparison is the PW1000G geared fan. GE’s commercial portfolio includes several engine families and a partnership-built narrowbody engine, rather than one single architecture that can be compared with the GTF across every market.

GE Aerospace’s 2025 Sustainability Report says LEAP has up to 15% lower fuel consumption than CFM56 for single-aisle aircraft, and GEnx has up to 15% lower fuel consumption than CF6-80C2 for twin-aisle aircraft. Those are GE-reported comparisons between engine generations; neither is a direct comparison with a Pratt & Whitney engine. Pratt & Whitney’s A320neo-family GTF claim uses a different baseline—prior-generation aircraft—so the percentages cannot be lined up to declare a winner. The report is available at GE Aerospace’s 2025 Sustainability Report.

Military engines and other markets

GE Aerospace

GE’s cited military portfolio includes fighter engines such as the F110, F404 and F414, as well as turboshaft and other propulsion products including the T700, T408 and T901. GE Aerospace also reports a Defense & Propulsion Technologies (DPT) segment. In 2025, DPT represented approximately 23% of total GE Aerospace revenue, and services were 51% of DPT revenue, according to GE’s filing.

Pratt & Whitney

Pratt & Whitney’s most prominent military program in the cited sources is the F135 for all three F-35 variants. RTX reported that the F135 passed one million engine flight hours in 2025. RTX also describes Pratt & Whitney as serving commercial, military, business-jet and general-aviation customers, so the company’s activity is broader than the GTF and F135 alone.

These examples do not establish a general military-engine ranking. A proper comparison depends on the aircraft and variant, mission requirements, procurement decision and support arrangement.

  • Simulation Model: A real electric motor inside the starter motor housing drives the 5-Cylinder Radial engine. The crankshaft, rods and pistons can be observed through special viewing windows. You can observe the operation of the 5-Cylinder Radial engine during the whole process. It is not only a beautiful decoration, but also a simulation dynamic model that can simulate the operation of a real 5-Cylinder Radial engine. Even when not in motion, it is an impressive machine to see.
  • Excellent Learning Activity: This kit is not recommended for unsupervised children under the age of 14, due to its small parts. However, it provides a great opportunity for adults to spend time with children. The child will learn to understand and follow illustrated instructions, manipulate parts and basic tools, and to know the accomplishment of a job well-done. It fosters an appreciation for the ingenuity in today’s technology as well as the need for it in coming generations.
  • CFM International: a 50/50 joint venture between GE Aerospace and Safran Aircraft Engines. CFM makes the LEAP family, so it is inaccurate to describe LEAP as solely GE’s product.
  • Engine Alliance: a 50/50 joint venture between GE Aerospace and Pratt & Whitney. GE’s filing also identifies this partnership; the alliance’s existence reflects collaboration as well as competition.
  • IAE: RTX’s product information also identifies Pratt & Whitney’s participation in the partnership around the V2500.

Ownership details are described in GE’s March 12, 2026 SEC filing and RTX’s 2025 Form 10-K.

Services matter, but the available figures are not apples to apples

Aircraft engines generate business beyond initial deliveries: operators also need parts, maintenance and long-term support. GE’s 2025 filing puts CES at approximately 73% of GE Aerospace revenue, with services making up 75% of CES revenue. These are GE-reported figures for its 2025 business and show how central commercial services are to GE Aerospace.

RTX’s cited filing describes Pratt & Whitney producing and servicing its GTF family, but it does not provide a comparable Pratt-only services share in the material cited here. GE’s percentages therefore cannot be used to claim that its aftermarket business is larger or more profitable than Pratt & Whitney’s on an equivalent basis.

How to decide which engine is better

There is no evidence here for a universal winner in fuel efficiency, reliability, durability or cost. To assess a real aircraft or fleet decision, compare the same aircraft program and engine variant under consistent assumptions, including:

  • Fuel burn per seat or per mission, with route, payload and utilization specified.
  • Dispatch reliability and time on wing in comparable service conditions.
  • Maintenance requirements, parts availability and lifecycle support.
  • Emissions and noise using the same measurement basis.
  • Purchase and operating costs over the intended ownership or lease period.

Manufacturer claims can help explain a product’s stated design goals, but their comparison baselines must stay attached. A percentage measured against a prior engine generation does not establish superiority over a competitor’s engine in a different aircraft or mission.
