General Motors confirmed job cuts in November 2024, but did not disclose a total. News reports put the reduction at nearly 1,000 workers, mostly salaried or white-collar employees. The reports differed on geography: TechCrunch described the cuts as U.S.-based, while Reuters said they were worldwide, mostly in the United States.

How many people did GM lay off?

The November 15, 2024, reports estimated nearly 1,000 layoffs. Reuters attributed that worldwide estimate to a source; GM’s public confirmation did not give a number. TechCrunch reported nearly 1,000 U.S. workers. The figures are estimates from news coverage, not a total GM publicly confirmed.

Reuters also reported that a state filing listed 507 employees at GM’s technical center in Warren, Michigan, among the reductions. That figure comes from the filing as described by Reuters; it was not a number GM announced.

Who was affected, and where?

Coverage characterized most affected employees as salaried or white-collar. TechCrunch reported that hourly workers at GM factories would not be affected. GM did not identify the teams involved.

The geographic descriptions are not identical. TechCrunch framed the cuts as affecting workers in the United States; Reuters’ source estimated nearly 1,000 worldwide, mostly in the U.S. AP likewise described the layoffs as mostly white-collar and said GM confirmed them while offering few details.

Why was GM cutting jobs?

GM framed the layoffs as an efficiency and organizational measure. In a statement quoted by TechCrunch on November 15, 2024, the company said: “In order to win in this competitive market, we need to optimize for speed and excellence. This includes operating with efficiency, ensuring we have the right team structure, and focusing on our top priorities as a business.” Reuters quoted GM’s shorter confirmation: “As part of this continuous effort, we’ve made a small number of team reductions.”

The reporting placed the cuts amid the expense of automakers’ transition to electric vehicles and GM’s investments in EV batteries and assembly, alongside continued development of gas-powered models. Reuters reported that GM aimed to reduce EV losses by $2 billion to $4 billion in 2025. That was a target reported in November 2024, not a verified later result.

How did the layoffs fit into GM’s 2024 cost-cutting timeline?

The word “another” in the original headline refers to an earlier software workforce reduction reported around August 2024. Reuters described that reduction as affecting more than 1,000 software workers. The November cuts were a separate round and were described as predominantly salaried or white-collar. Coverage also noted an earlier reduction at a Kansas manufacturing plant, distinct from both rounds.

Two cost figures cited in the coverage had different scopes and deadlines. AP reported that CFO Paul Jacobson said GM was on track to meet a goal of cutting $2 billion in fixed costs by the end of 2024. Reuters separately reported the $2 billion-to-$4 billion target for reducing EV losses in 2025. Neither target should be treated as proof of the November layoffs’ sole cause or as a result confirmed by these reports.
