No official record cited for the 2020 Sonbhadra claim supports a discovery of 20 metric tons of gold. India’s Ministry of Mines said that geologists had not discovered a gold mine in Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh. It reported estimates for gold-bearing ore at two locations; ore tonnage is not the same as the amount of gold metal.
What did India’s government say about the Sonbhadra gold claim?
In a Lok Sabha answer on 11 March 2020, Minister of Mines Pralhad Joshi stated that the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and Uttar Pradesh’s Directorate of Geology and Mining “have not discovered any gold mine in Sonbhadra District of Uttar Pradesh.” The answer described exploration estimates at Sona Pahari and Hardi, not a discovered or operating mine. (Ministry of Mines, Lok Sabha Unstarred Question No. 2784)
How much gold-bearing ore was reported?
The ministry gave separate figures for the two locations. These figures describe ore and its average gold grade; they should not be added together or presented as tonnage of gold metal.
| Location | Reported ore estimate | Average grade | Gold metal stated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sona Pahari | 52,806.25 tonnes of ore | 3.03 grams of gold per tonne | Approximately 160 kg described as extractable |
| Hardi (Eastern Block) | 2,153,000 tonnes of ore | 0.30 grams of gold per tonne | Not stated in the parliamentary answer |
All figures in the table are from the Ministry of Mines’ answer dated 11 March 2020. (Ministry of Mines, Lok Sabha Unstarred Question No. 2784)

- COMPLETE GOLD PANNING KIT FOR ADULTS & BEGINNERS: Scoop paydirt with the 12" scoop, screen it through the 6" mini gold classifier, run it through the pocket sluice box, then finish in two patented spiral riffle gold pans. Everything for a first day on the creek, packed in one drawstring backpack.
- 12" POCKET SLUICE BOX WITH MINERS MOSS: A rubber riffle mat and miners moss trap heavy gold in a sluice small enough to carry anywhere. Use it to sample-test a gravel bar before hauling in big gear, clean up concentrates at home, or show kids how a sluice works.
- PATENTED SPIRAL RIFFLE GOLD PANS (US 12,582,996): Deep-walled 9" and 11" pans built like a classic prospector's pan, not a shallow dish. Aggressive riffles knock out light material fast, and the spiral riffles hold the fine flakes that flat-bottom pans wash away during finish panning.
- 35 LB RARE EARTH MAGNET, SNUFFER BOTTLE & MAGNIFIER TWEEZERS: The HUNTLEY sweeper wand's 35 lb rare earth magnet pulls black sand from your concentrates, the snuffer bottle vacuums gold flakes off the pan, and stainless magnifier tweezers let you spot and pick out flakes too small to grab by hand. Three glass gold vials hold the day's take.
- DESIGNED BY KEYESVILLE, CALIFORNIA PROSPECTORS: Sluice Fox kits are designed by prospectors who learned to pan in historic Keyesville, in California's Kern River gold country, and assembled in our own warehouses near the Sierra and Appalachian mountains. A gift that gets a family outdoors, from a brand that has been in the creek, not just a catalog.
Why ore tonnage is not gold tonnage
Ore is rock containing a mineral of interest. A grade of 3.03 grams per tonne means that the stated average amount of gold in each tonne of Sona Pahari ore was 3.03 grams—not 3.03 tonnes of gold. The ministry separately described approximately 160 kg as extractable from that resource. The larger ore figure therefore cannot be reported as an equal amount of gold.
What does the 20-metric-ton headline get wrong?
The official figures do not support a claim that geologists uncovered 20 metric tons of gold. The Sona Pahari estimate was about 52,806 tonnes of ore, with approximately 160 kg of gold described as extractable. Hardi was a separate, lower-grade ore estimate. Neither figure is a 20-tonne deposit of gold metal. GSI meeting minutes give a rounded tentative Sona Pahari estimate of approximately 0.053 million tonnes of ore at 3.03 grams per tonne, consistent with the ministry’s more precise ore figure. Does an exploration estimate mean a mine is ready to operate?
No. An exploration resource estimate is not automatically a mineable reserve, an approved concession, or an operating mine. In a 2023 release, the Ministry of Mines described how indicated resources may be upgraded to mineable reserves by successful bidders after auction. That general explanation does not establish whether either Sonbhadra block has since been auctioned or developed. (Press Information Bureau, Ministry of Mines, “Gold Exploration in India”)
The 2020 parliamentary answer also noted that, under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2015, major-mineral concessions could be allotted through auction, with state governments holding the concession-granting authority. That describes the process stated in the answer; it does not establish the current status of Sona Pahari or Hardi.

What is known about the blocks’ current status?
The cited official records establish what the government reported in 2020 and explain the general resource-to-reserve process in 2023. They do not establish the present auction, licensing, exploration, or mine-development status of the Sona Pahari and Hardi locations. The 2020 estimates should not be treated as confirmation that extraction has started or that the estimates remain unchanged.
