Higher oil prices can raise the cost of making plastic, but they do not guarantee that every plastic product will get more expensive—or by the same amount. Oil-derived naphtha is a key feedstock in many regions, while U.S. producers rely more heavily on natural gas and related feedstocks. Energy, transport, supply disruptions and weak demand also shape whether higher costs reach consumers.
How can fuel prices affect plastic?
Crude oil is not turned directly into most plastic products. Refineries produce streams such as naphtha, which petrochemical plants can process into the chemical building blocks used to make plastics. When oil and naphtha become more expensive, that feedstock channel can raise polymer costs. Plastic production also uses energy, and moving raw materials and finished goods can cost more when fuel prices rise. The size and timing of these effects depend on local feedstocks, contracts, shipping routes, inventories, production capacity and demand.
The exposure varies by region. Reuters, citing the U.S. Energy Information Administration, reported in March 2026 that U.S. plastics are largely made from natural gas and related feedstocks, while producers in many other regions mainly rely on oil-derived naphtha. That difference can make the same oil shock affect producers unevenly; it does not insulate U.S. plastics from transport costs or changes in global markets. Reuters, republished by Investing.com
What do recent price figures show?
The figures below point to cost pressure at different stages of the supply chain. They measure different products, markets and price levels, so they cannot be treated as interchangeable measures of what households will pay.

These measures capture distinct points in the chain: crude futures, producer input and output prices, a U.S. producer index for resins and materials, and a European spot-market estimate for one resin. None establishes a matching percentage increase in the price of a household item.
Will higher oil prices make plastic products more expensive?
They can, but the increase is not automatic or uniform. In March 2026, Reuters reported that disruption to flows through the Strait of Hormuz tightened petrochemical supply and that producers in several markets announced or implemented price increases. Those examples show how a supply shock and higher costs can lead to producer price changes; they do not show that every producer or product followed suit.
Whether a higher upstream cost reaches a shopper depends partly on demand and bargaining power. A September 2026 ICIS report said high crude prices were lifting Asian petrochemical prices even as end-use demand remained weak. Downstream producers were unable to pass all higher upstream costs to customers and were considering output cuts as margins deteriorated. Higher resin costs can therefore squeeze a manufacturer without appearing in full—or immediately—in a product’s shelf price. ICIS, September 16, 2026
Could packaging prices go up?
Packaging is one possible place for higher resin and transport costs to matter, but the available figures do not establish a particular increase for packaging or other consumer goods. A packaging supplier may absorb some costs, pass some on to a business customer, or adjust prices later. The result depends on the material used, supply agreements, competing suppliers and the strength of demand—not just the oil price.

For household budgets, it is more useful to watch the price of a specific product than to apply a resin or producer-index percentage to a shopping basket. A jump in a raw-material benchmark is evidence of pressure upstream, not a forecast of the same-sized rise at checkout.

There is no direct household product that hedges against broad increases in plastic prices. If disposable food-storage bags are a regular purchase, reusable food-storage bags may reduce reliance on that one item. Before buying, consider durability, washability, food-contact suitability, storage needs and upfront cost. They are not a universal substitute for plastic packaging, and there is no basis to assume they will guarantee savings. UN Trade and Development’s discussion of alternatives addresses materials and trade more broadly, not a guaranteed household-cost workaround.
