The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Novo Nordisk Foundation and Wellcome announced a three-year global health research partnership totaling US$300 million on May 6, 2024. Each foundation committed US$100 million. The money is intended to support research and development for solutions that can be accessible and affordable in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

What is the $300 million global health partnership?

It is a three-year philanthropic commitment by three foundations to fund global health research and development. The launch announcement was made at the Novo Nordisk Foundation’s Global Science Summit in Denmark. The announcement described the goal as helping produce health solutions that people in LMICs can access and afford. Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, May 6, 2024

The name matters: the funder is the Novo Nordisk Foundation, not Novo Nordisk A/S, the pharmaceutical company. “Novo Nordisk” in shorthand references to this partnership can obscure that distinction.

How much is each foundation contributing?

Foundation Announced commitment Term
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation US$100 million Three-year partnership
Novo Nordisk Foundation US$100 million Three-year partnership
Wellcome US$100 million Three-year partnership
Total US$300 million Three-year partnership

These figures describe the total announced commitment over three years, not an annual funding level or a claim that all of the money has already been paid out. The partner announcements identify two investments totaling US$120 million; they do not provide a complete disbursement ledger or a full account of all awards.

What research will it fund?

At launch, the partners named three initial areas for research and innovation:

  • The health impacts of climate change.
  • Infectious disease and antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
  • The relationships among nutrition, immunity, disease and developmental outcomes.

The launch announcement described these as initial priorities, not a definitive list of every project the partnership might support. It also said the partners intended to explore bringing in public and private partners and other philanthropic organizations; that expressed an intention, not confirmation that expansion occurred.

Which investments have the partners announced since launch?

By February 2026, partner announcements had identified two investments of US$60 million each. They target different problems and are described as the partnership’s first and second investments, respectively.

Investment Announced amount Focus Sequence
Gram-Negative Antibiotic Discovery Innovator (Gr-ADI) US$60 million over three years New approaches to antibiotic discovery for Gram-negative bacteria; 18 funded projects led by research teams in 17 countries First named investment
Evaluating AI for Health (EVAH) US$60 million Locally led evaluations of AI health tools in LMICs Second named investment

The Gates Foundation’s January 22, 2026 announcement called Gr-ADI the partnership’s first investment.
