GameStop has completed the sale of its Canadian operations. The company announced in February 2025 that it intended to pursue a sale in Canada and France; its latest quarterly filing says the Canadian transaction closed in the second quarter of fiscal 2025.
What happened to GameStop’s Canadian operations?
GameStop sold Electronics Boutique Canada, Inc., the subsidiary that operated its Canadian retail stores and e-commerce business. GameStop’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended August 1, 2026, confirms the sale was completed during the second quarter of fiscal 2025. The filing says the Canadian assets and liabilities were derecognized after closing.

The Canadian business’s sale announcement identified Stephan Tetrault as the buyer and said the business would relaunch as EB Games Canada. Those buyer and branding details come from the Canadian announcement; GameStop’s SEC filing confirms the completed sale but does not identify the buyer.
Why did GameStop say it was looking to sell?
On February 18, 2025, GameStop announced that, as part of an evaluation of its international assets, it intended to pursue sales of its operations in both Canada and France. That was an announcement of its plan, not confirmation that a buyer had been secured or that either transaction had closed. The Canadian sale was subsequently completed in fiscal 2025’s second quarter.

What did GameStop disclose about the sale financially?
GameStop did not disclose a purchase price in the cited filing. It characterized the proceeds from the Canadian sale and the related loss on disposal as immaterial to its financial statements. That accounting description does not reveal the amount paid by the buyer.
GameStop separately reported an $18.3 million impairment expense related to the Canadian disposal group in fiscal 2025. An impairment is an accounting charge reflecting a reduction in the value of assets; it is not the sale price, nor does it establish how much the buyer paid.

Was the French operation part of the Canadian sale?
No. Canada and France were both included in GameStop’s February 2025 announcement of intended sales, but they were separate divestitures. GameStop’s latest quarterly filing says the French operation was sold in the second quarter of fiscal 2026; that transaction was not part of the Canadian sale.
