Mudstack announced a $4 million financing round on August 19, 2024, and named games-industry veteran James Gwertzman its CEO. The company said it would use the funding to develop its game-production software, grow its team and expand its customer base.

What Mudstack does

Mudstack described its product as file-versioning, asset-management and collaboration software for game studios and their artists, developers and producers. The company’s stated goal was to help teams manage game content and production workflows; GeekWire characterized the offering as cloud storage for game-asset management.

In the company’s August 19, 2024 announcement, Gwertzman said: “It’s crazy to me that our industry is so mature, yet basic tools for managing content and production pipelines are still lacking.” He also described a long-standing ambition to build an “operating system for game studios.” Those remarks explain the company’s vision, not an independent assessment of the product or its results.

Who invested, and how Mudstack said it would use the money

Mudstack said Anthos Capital led the $4 million round. Khosla Ventures, A16Z GAMES, Pioneer Square Labs and Hyperplane also participated. The announcement did not disclose each investor’s contribution, the company’s valuation or the financing instrument.

The company said it planned to put the funding toward further platform development, hiring and customer expansion. The announcement does not establish how the money was ultimately spent.

Why James Gwertzman became CEO

Gwertzman was named CEO, while co-founder and then-CEO Jordan Stevens was set to become Head of Product, according to Mudstack. The company said Gwertzman had co-founded and led PlayFab. Andreessen Horowitz’s 2021 account also identifies him as a PlayFab founder and describes his background as a repeat founder, executive and investor in games.

GamesBeat reported that Gwertzman said he joined Mudstack as CEO in May 2024. His appointment therefore preceded the August funding announcement.

What Mudstack said about customers

Mudstack said it had signed its first two large enterprise customers: Metacore and Paradox Studios. That is a company-reported milestone from the 2024 announcement, not confirmation of a present-day customer relationship.

The release included an endorsement from Petter Lundh, identified as Managing Art Director at Paradox Studios. Lundh said Mudstack saved time managing game assets and was simple enough for artists to use without training. This is a customer testimonial published by the company, not an independently tested result.

What the 2024 announcement does—and does not—establish

GeekWire reported that Mudstack was founded in 2019 by Jordan Stevens and had a five-person remote team at the time of its 2024 coverage. Those are historical details, not current company figures. The August 2024 announcement establishes what Mudstack said about its financing, leadership, product direction and early enterprise customers then; it does not establish the company’s current operating status, product availability, features, pricing or customer roster.
