PerthNow described it as the move from a popular online and market-based venture to a permanent place for customers to buy cake and meet in person. That is a historical opening announcement, not confirmation of the venue’s current hours or menu.
What were Syft and Gather Bakehouse?
Syft was Lucy Long’s cake venture, which she began as a university side hustle in 2021. As demand grew, she sold through markets and social platforms and pursued a permanent shop. PerthNow reported in February 2024 that Gather Bakehouse was the evolution of that business, bringing its sweet treats into a Leederville storefront. PerthNow’s opening announcement identified Long as Syft’s creator and founder.
What did the 2024 opening announcement say the shop would offer?
The planned in-store range included Baby Cakes, retro-style cakes, cake slices, New York-style cookies, brownies and coffee. PerthNow also reported that Syft’s packaged boxes and pre-orders would continue, so the move into a physical shop was presented as an expansion rather than the end of its online business. These were plans reported for the 2024 launch; they do not establish the current café menu.
Why did Long want a physical shop?
Long described the shop as a place where people could gather and connect face-to-face, not simply a counter for buying cake. She told PerthNow: “It’s about cultivating a sense of belonging among friends, neighbours, strangers, everyone and anyone as part of their daily rhythm”.
