In Amir Satvat’s August 2024 map, Asia had the most of the 14,162 mapped open video-game roles, followed by Europe and North America. The figure is a historical snapshot of vacancies being hired for—not a count of everyone employed in games or a live tally of jobs open today. Satvat’s March 2025 update reported 14,238 roles after adding companies identified in Asia, underscoring that the map’s coverage and totals can change.
Where the mapped openings were concentrated
Amir Satvat’s August 2024 mapping, reported by GamesBeat, counted 14,162 open video-game roles across continents, countries, regions and cities. Asia, Europe and North America together accounted for 84% of the mapped roles.

These are the three largest continent totals reported in the August 2024 snapshot, not a current vacancy ranking. The figures and the 84% combined share were reported by GamesBeat.
Countries, regions and cities with the most mapped roles
The largest listed country totals in the August 2024 map were the United States, China, England, Canada, Japan and Poland. The GamesBeat article lists five in its sentence about the six largest countries; Canada’s figure appears in Satvat’s original post.

The report also highlighted five U.S. and Canadian areas: California (1,113), Quebec (528), Washington State (271), British Columbia (217) and North Carolina (155). Together, it said, those areas represented 16% of worldwide mapped openings and 71% of the openings in the United States and Canada. California alone accounted for 48% of the mapped U.S. roles. These figures are attributed to Satvat in GamesBeat.

Satvat’s August 2024 report said these ten cities together accounted for 28% of mapped roles. The country, regional and city figures above were reported by GamesBeat and, for the country list, Satvat’s original LinkedIn post.
Remote roles were a minority in the 2024 snapshot
Of the 14,162 roles in the August 2024 map, 1,980 were classified as remote (14%) and 12,182 as non-remote (86%), according to Satvat as reported by GamesBeat. These proportions describe that snapshot; they do not tell a job seeker whether a specific position is remote, hybrid or tied to a particular office. Check the current listing for its work-location terms.

Why a later total is higher
In March 2025, Satvat reported 14,238 roles, 76 more than the August 2024 total. He attributed the increase to game companies in Asia that had been newly identified and added to the map. Between the two snapshots, Asia’s reported share rose from 32% to 43%, while remote roles’ share fell from 14% to 10%. The change is evidence that the map’s coverage and classification can shift as it is updated—not proof that the industry added exactly 76 net vacancies during that period. What the map can—and cannot—tell a job seeker
Satvat describes the count as a mapping of open roles being hired for, rather than all roles in the industry. In his 2024 post, he wrote: “I also want to be crystal clear because a few folks asked: this is a mapping of all OPEN roles (those being hired for) in video games, not ALL roles (which would be impossible).” The distinction matters: 14,162 is not an estimate of total employment in games.

Satvat says the map tracks roles across more than 3,000 companies and aggregates location information from individual roles. GamesBeat reported his estimate that version 14 of the mapping process was 95% to 99% accurate. That is Satvat’s reported estimate, not an independent audit; the reviewed sources do not supply a reproducible methodology or third-party validation for the percentage. The March 2025 update describes the method as mapping roles rather than relying on estimates or partial samples, but expanding company coverage can still change the resulting totals.
The aggregate counts are useful for comparing where mapped openings were concentrated and how remote roles were classified at a given time. They do not establish whether an individual listing is still open, whether you meet its requirements, or whether relocation makes financial sense. The sources do not provide listing-level status, salaries, role discipline, seniority, visa sponsorship, language requirements or comparisons of living costs.

How to use the figures when planning a search
- Use the numbers as geographic context. The August 2024 map can help identify regions and cities with substantial mapped hiring, but do not treat its rankings as current demand.
- Check the actual role’s location terms. A remote share for the full map cannot establish whether an individual job permits remote work or hiring from your location.
- Verify a vacancy with the employer. Confirm that the role is still open, then review pay, work arrangement, eligibility, visa conditions and any relocation expectations on the employer’s current careers page.
- Make a personal financial comparison. Before moving or changing jobs, compare the role’s compensation and location-specific costs with your own circumstances; the map does not supply those details.
Satvat’s original post links to a 2024 raw-results file and mentions a Games Jobs Workbook, but the available sources do not establish that either is current or suitable as a live job-search service. Treat them as historical resources unless their current status is confirmed, and use employers’ current careers pages to verify openings.
