Charlie Javice, founder of the financial-aid platform Frank, was sentenced to 85 months in federal prison on September 29, 2025—seven years and one month—for her role in the fraud prosecutors said led JPMorgan Chase to buy Frank for $175 million. The jury convicted Javice and Frank executive Olivier Amar in March 2025. The sentence also includes supervised release, forfeiture and restitution.
How long is Charlie Javice’s prison sentence?
Javice received 85 months in prison, which is seven years and one month. “Seven years” is a rounded description, not the exact sentence. U.S. District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein also imposed three years of supervised release, a forfeiture judgment of $22,360,977.48, and $287,501,078 in restitution, jointly and severally with Amar, meaning each is responsible for the full amount until it is paid.
The sentence was imposed September 29, 2025. The U.S. Attorney’s Office announcement gives the sentence and its components.
What was the jury’s verdict?
On March 28, 2025, after a six-week trial, a federal jury found Javice and Amar guilty of conspiracy, wire fraud, bank fraud and securities fraud. The Justice Department announced the verdict in its conviction release. The jury’s convictions are adjudicated outcomes; descriptions of how the alleged fraud was carried out should be understood as the prosecution’s account.

What did prosecutors say happened at Frank?
Frank was a for-profit online service founded by Javice around 2017 to help students navigate the federal Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. JPMorgan acquired the company in summer 2021 for $175 million.
According to prosecutors, Javice represented that Frank had 4.25 million users, while the company had approximately 300,000. The Justice Department said she defined a user as someone who had signed up and for whom Frank held four specified categories of data. Prosecutors also said Frank purchased 4.5 million student records for $105,000 to create a data set for the acquisition process; those records did not contain all the fields Javice had represented the company maintained.

The SEC’s 2023 civil complaint also alleged that Frank represented a 4.25 million user base despite having fewer than 300,000 users. That filing contains allegations, not the later jury verdict. The SEC complaint and transaction background are available in the agency’s complaint.

In March 2026, the district court denied Javice and Amar’s motions for a new trial. The court’s March 24 opinion notes that Javice had filed an appeal; denying a new-trial motion is not the same as an appeals court affirming or overturning a conviction. The opinion is available in the district court ruling hosted by vLex.
