The right loan is the one that lowers your all-in cost, produces a payment you can afford after ordinary expenses, gives you a reasonably short payoff date, and does not leave you rebuilding the card balances. For many fair-to-good-credit borrowers, Happen Bank, formerly LendingClub, is the strongest debt-consolidation-specific option because it can pay creditors directly. For strong-credit borrowers prioritizing no origination fee, start with SoFi, LightStream, U.S. Bank, and PenFed. For fair-credit borrowers, compare Upgrade and Achieve—but scrutinize their potentially high origination fees.
The rates and terms below are advertised or disclosed figures verified in the United States as of August 9, 2026. They are not guaranteed offers. Your rate, loan amount, fees, approval, and available term can vary by credit profile, income, debt-to-income ratio, state, loan size, and lender underwriting.
Quick comparison: leading credit-card consolidation loans
Use this table to decide which lenders are worth prequalifying with. It is a borrower-profile comparison, not a universal ranking. A lender advertising the lowest starting APR may still be more expensive after fees or may not approve you at that rate.
| Lender | Best fit | Loan amounts and terms | APR and fees | Direct payment or speed | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Happen Bank formerly LendingClub |
Many fair-to-good-credit borrowers who want debt-consolidation features | $1,000–$75,000 24–84 months |
About 5.96%–35.99% APR 0%–8% origination or processing fee |
Direct Pay to eligible creditors; a direct-pay APR discount may apply. Funding timing varies. | An origination fee as high as 8% can erase the interest savings. |
| SoFi | Strong-credit borrowers seeking a no-required-origination-fee loan | $5,000–$100,000 2–7 years |
6.99%–35.49% APR with listed discounts No origination or prepayment fee; no late fee on qualifying new applications |
Direct-pay discount may be available. Funding timing depends on verification and banking. | The lowest rates are generally reserved for the strongest applicants. |
| LightStream | Excellent-credit borrowers wanting a no-fee loan or borrowing more than $50,000 | $5,000–$100,000 Debt-consolidation terms generally 24–84 months |
No origination fee or prepayment penalty Maximum posted APR 25.39%; rate varies by amount and term |
Does not directly pay creditors. Same-day funding may be available, subject to cutoff, verification, and bank delays. | Strong credit is generally expected, and Florida documentary stamp tax may apply. |
| Upgrade | Fair-credit borrowers who need flexible terms | $1,000–$50,000 24–84 months |
7.74%–35.99% APR 1.85%–9.99% origination fee |
Debt-payoff option is available; no prepayment fee. Timing varies. | The fee may be deducted from proceeds, and a high-end APR may not beat credit-card rates. |
| Achieve | Borrowers considering a joint application or available rate discounts | $5,000–$50,000 24–60 months |
6.25%–35.99% APR 1.99%–9.99% fee |
Direct-pay, co-borrower, and other discounts may be available. Timing varies. | The maximum term is shorter than several competitors, and the fee can be substantial. |
| U.S. Bank | Eligible borrowers, especially existing bank customers, who want a traditional-bank option | Existing customers: $1,000–$50,000 Noncustomers: up to $25,000 12–84 months for customers; up to 60 months for noncustomers |
9.24%–24.99% APR as of July 20, 2026 No origination fee or prepayment penalty |
Funding and payment method depend on the application and offer. | Noncustomers may receive a lower maximum, and the best advertised rate requires specific conditions and strong credit. |
| PenFed Credit Union | A credit-union quote to compare with online lenders | Amount, term, and APR depend on creditworthiness and membership conditions | No origination, balance-transfer, or early-payoff fee disclosed on its debt-consolidation page | Direct creditor payments may be available. Timing and eligibility vary. | The public page does not display a complete current rate range; membership and underwriting conditions apply. |
| Happy Money | Borrowers wanting a product specifically marketed for paying off credit cards | $5,000–$50,000 | Lending-partner APRs of 8.95%–35.99% as of July 8, 2026 | Marketplace or lending-partner model; final payment and funding terms depend on the offer. | Fees and terms depend on the specific lending partner, not only the Happy Money brand. |

Our picks by borrower profile
Best debt-consolidation-specific option for many borrowers: Happen Bank
Happen Bank is the new name for LendingClub. The corporate and bank name changes became effective June 22, 2026, so older comparison articles may still call it LendingClub. See the SEC filing describing the name change.
Happen is a particularly relevant starting point when the goal is paying several card issuers rather than receiving unrestricted cash. Its disclosed loan range is $1,000 to $75,000, with terms of 24 to 84 months and an advertised APR range of roughly 5.96% to 35.99%. Its terms disclose origination or processing fees from 0% to 8%. Different versions of the official disclosure show a maximum APR of 35.96% or 35.99%, so treat the range as time-sensitive rather than permanent.
Its Direct Pay feature can send proceeds to eligible creditors, and a direct-pay APR discount of approximately 0.75% to 8% may be available depending on the offer. That discount is conditional, not automatic. A high fee can outweigh it: an 8% fee on a $20,000 loan is $1,600. Review the final loan agreement, not only the prequalification screen.
Best no-required-origination-fee option for strong credit: SoFi
SoFi is a leading candidate for borrowers with strong credit who want a large unsecured loan without an origination fee. It advertises $5,000 to $100,000 loans, two- to seven-year terms, and APRs of 6.99% to 35.49% with listed discounts. SoFi says qualifying new applications have no origination fee, prepayment penalty, or late fee. A direct-pay discount may also be available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe trade-off is access to the advertised rate. A high credit score alone does not guarantee approval or a low APR; SoFi also evaluates income, debt obligations, payment history, utilization, loan size, and term. Prequalify first when possible, then compare the actual payment and fee disclosure with other offers.
Best no-fee choice for excellent credit and larger balances: LightStream
LightStream offers $5,000 to $100,000 for debt consolidation, does not charge an origination fee or prepayment penalty, and may provide same-day funding. Same-day does not mean guaranteed: cutoff times, identity or income verification, business days, and the receiving bank can delay access to the money.
LightStream does not directly pay credit-card companies, so the borrower must use the proceeds correctly and request payoff amounts. Its lowest rates are aimed at excellent-credit borrowers. The lender’s rate table dated July 26, 2026 shows that pricing changes by amount and term. For example, a $10,000-to-$24,999 debt-consolidation loan is listed at 7.24% to 19.89% for 24 to 36 months and 8.74% to 20.14% for 73 to 84 months. A longer term may lower the payment while increasing the total cost.
LightStream also notes that Florida documentary stamp tax may apply. That is an example of why a nominal no-fee label does not eliminate the need to inspect state-specific disclosures.
Best for fair-credit flexibility: Upgrade
Upgrade lists loans from $1,000 to $50,000, terms from 24 to 84 months, APRs from 7.74% to 35.99%, and origination fees from 1.85% to 9.99%. It offers a debt-payoff feature, fixed payments, and no prepayment fee. Those features can make it worth comparing when prime lenders are unlikely to approve the application.
However, the fee deserves special attention. Upgrade illustrates how a loan with a 13.94% interest rate and a 5% origination fee can have a 17.98% APR. On a nominal $10,000 loan, a 5% fee could leave only $9,500 available if deducted from proceeds, while the contractual balance is based on the full loan amount. The official Upgrade page currently lists a maximum loan amount of $50,000; a comparison website showing a different maximum may be describing a marketplace or older offer.
Best for joint applications and potential discounts: Achieve
Achieve advertises $5,000 to $50,000 loans with 24- to 60-month terms, APRs from 6.25% to 35.99%, and fees from 1.99% to 9.99%. It may offer co-borrower, retirement-asset, and direct-pay discounts. A joint application can improve the underwriting picture in some cases, but the co-borrower becomes responsible for the debt; do not add one casually.
Achieve’s disclosed minimum credit score is 560 for some loans, while loans of $35,000 or more require at least 660 under its current FAQ. These are screening disclosures, not approval guarantees or promises of a favorable rate. The 60-month maximum term may also be limiting for borrowers who need a lower payment.
Best traditional-bank alternative: U.S. Bank
U.S. Bank is worth checking for eligible existing customers who prefer a bank rather than an online lender or marketplace. Its disclosed APR range was 9.24% to 24.99% as of July 20, 2026, with no origination fee or prepayment penalty. Existing customers can request $1,000 to $50,000 and terms of 12 to 84 months; noncustomers may be limited to $25,000 and terms of up to 60 months.

The lowest advertised rate may require exceptional credit, a particular term or amount, autopay, or other conditions. Compare the offer’s total repayment with online and credit-union quotes rather than assuming a bank relationship produces the best price.
Best credit-union quote to obtain: PenFed
PenFed is a useful comparison quote because its debt-consolidation product does not charge origination, balance-transfer, or early-payoff fees according to its public page. The current public information does not show a complete rate range, so the value of the offer can be judged only after prequalification or application. Membership, creditworthiness, loan amount, and membership length can affect eligibility and pricing.
Best niche credit-card-payoff marketplace: Happy Money
Happy Money markets a payoff loan specifically for credit-card debt. It lists $5,000 to $50,000 loans, with lending-partner APRs of 8.95% to 35.99% as of July 8, 2026. Because it uses a lending-partner model, the partner making the offer controls the final APR, fees, term, approval, and other conditions. Read the actual lender agreement before treating a prequalification as a firm comparison.

Why credit-card consolidation can help—and why it often does not
A personal consolidation loan replaces multiple revolving balances with one installment balance. The payment is usually fixed under the loan agreement, and the amortization schedule gives the debt a defined payoff date. The debt is not forgiven, however, and the loan does not solve a budget shortfall by itself.
Credit-card debt is expensive. The Federal Reserve’s G.19 data showed an average rate of 20.94% on all credit-card accounts in May 2026. The rate for accounts assessed interest was 21.52% in February 2026, the latest observation shown in that series. These are market-level observations, not the rate on your particular cards or a promise that a personal loan will be cheaper. The Federal Reserve data preview identifies the relevant observations.
The New York Fed reported $1.252 trillion in credit-card balances and a 7.10% flow into serious delinquency in the first quarter of 2026. Those figures show why borrowers are looking for relief, but they do not mean consolidation is appropriate for everyone. The New York Fed household-debt report provides the underlying figures.
How to test whether a consolidation loan is actually cheaper
1. Inventory every card
Before requesting a loan, record the current balance, purchase APR, promotional APR and expiration date, minimum payment, annual fee, account status, and any deferred-interest or pending-transaction terms. Use current payoff amounts where available. A rough total can lead to a loan that does not cover the balances or leaves an unexpectedly large residual balance.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
2. Calculate your weighted-average card APR
For a quick screening estimate, multiply each balance by its APR, add the products, and divide by total balances:
Weighted-average APR = (sum of balance × APR) ÷ total balances
For example:
Card A: $8,000 × 29% = $2,320
Card B: $5,000 × 22% = $1,100
Card C: $2,000 × 18% = $360
$3,780 ÷ $15,000 = 25.20% weighted-average APR
This is only a screening tool. Credit cards calculate interest using their own balance and payment rules, while a personal loan amortizes on a schedule. A promotional 0% balance, annual fee, late fee, or card that would have been paid off soon can make the real comparison different.
3. Compare APR and total dollars, not the interest rate alone
APR is usually the better starting point because it incorporates interest and certain loan fees. An advertised interest rate can look attractive while an origination fee makes the all-in cost less favorable.
Suppose a lender advertises a $20,000 loan with a 5% fee. The fee is $1,000. If deducted from proceeds, you receive $19,000 but generally repay the full contractual principal. If you need exactly $20,000 after a 5% deduction, the nominal loan would need to be approximately $21,052.63 before considering the resulting payment and eligibility limits.
4. Set an affordable maximum payment before choosing a term
Calculate what remains after housing, utilities, food, transportation, insurance, taxes, minimum obligations, and a modest emergency reserve. Do not select a loan merely because its lowest monthly payment fits on paper. A payment that leaves no margin makes a future missed payment more likely.
For illustration, a fully amortizing $20,000 fixed-rate loan would look approximately like this:
Rank #3
- Material: Genuine leather and PVC card slots.
- Size: 4.72"*3.15"*0.7" (12*8*1.8 CM)
- Large Capacity: The card holder has 26 cards slots. It is enough room for your ID card, credit cards, gift cards and dicounted cards. Small size is perfect to fit in your pockets or handbags.
- RFID Blocking: RFID Blocking designed lining keeps your vital information Secure. Be safe and protected from Electronic Pick pocketing.
- Great Gift Idea: Great gift for mother, daughter, grandmother and so on.
| APR and term | Monthly payment | Total interest | Total scheduled payments |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12% for 36 months | $664.29 | $3,914.30 | $23,914.30 |
| 17.98% for 36 months | $722.85 | Approximately $6,022.60 | Approximately $26,022.60 |
| 21.4% for 36 months | $757.62 | Approximately $7,274.32 | Approximately $27,274.32 |
| 12% for 60 months | $444.89 | $6,693.34 | $26,693.34 |
These are illustrative amortization calculations, not lender quotes. They exclude origination fees and assume a fully amortizing fixed-rate loan. The 60-month example lowers the payment by about $219 compared with the 36-month loan at the same APR, but adds about $2,779 in interest. A lower payment is not automatically a lower-cost loan.
5. Check whether the loan covers the right balances
A partial consolidation is not automatically beneficial. If the loan pays off low-rate cards while the highest-rate card remains, the resulting average cost may not improve. Reject an offer if its net proceeds do not cover the intended payoffs unless you have deliberately budgeted the difference and know which balances will remain.
What to compare in the actual loan offers
Prequalification pages are useful for narrowing choices, but compare the formal offers side by side:

- APR: Compare the final APR, not the starting rate shown in an advertisement.
- Net proceeds: Confirm the amount that will actually reach creditors or your bank account after fees.
- Total repayment: Multiply the scheduled payment by the number of payments and add any charges not included in the APR.
- Term: Choose the shortest term that fits the budget without eliminating all emergency margin.
- Direct payment: Confirm which creditors qualify, what percentage must be paid directly, and whether the discount depends on using the feature.
- Prepayment: A no-penalty loan lets you pay faster if your budget improves, but do not assume every lender uses the same fee policy.
- Credit inquiry: Ask whether the initial check is a soft inquiry and when a hard inquiry occurs.
- State availability: Lender amounts, rates, fees, taxes, and eligibility can vary by state and can change after the date shown here.
- Discount conditions: Autopay, direct payment, membership, or other discounts may have requirements and can be lost if the conditions change.
How to apply without creating unnecessary credit damage
- Gather your card information. Have balances, issuer names, account numbers, payoff amounts, APRs, and minimum payments ready.
- Calculate your target loan amount. Include any fee that will be deducted from proceeds. Do not borrow extra simply because the lender offers a larger amount.
- Set your payment ceiling. Base it on your post-expense budget and a realistic emergency reserve.
- Prequalify with a short list. Start with lenders that offer a soft-pull rate check. A prequalification is not guaranteed approval or a guaranteed final rate. SoFi explains the difference between prequalification and a full application in its prequalification guide.
- Compare the final offers. Do not submit full applications indiscriminately to every lender. A full application generally causes a hard inquiry and may affect your credit score.
- Choose the offer with the lowest practical total cost. That means a lower all-in cost at a payment you can sustain, not simply the lowest monthly payment.
- Confirm the funding instructions. Verify creditor names, account numbers, payoff amounts, and whether the lender will pay the creditors directly.
- Keep making minimum payments. Continue payments on every card until each issuer confirms that the payoff has posted. Happen Bank specifically instructs borrowers to continue regular payments until creditor confirmation.
- Verify the payoff. Save funding confirmations, payoff letters, final statements, and evidence of any residual interest or small balance being cleared.
- Prevent a second cycle of debt. Remove stored card numbers, stop discretionary use, create a cash reserve, and put the new loan on autopay only if the account will reliably contain enough money.
Direct creditor payment: useful, but not automatic protection
Direct payment can reduce the temptation to spend the loan proceeds elsewhere. Happen Bank, Upgrade, Achieve, SoFi, and PenFed advertise some form of creditor-payment feature, but their eligible creditor networks, minimum payment percentages, timing, and discount rules differ. LightStream does not directly pay creditors.
A card can also be identified by the issuing bank rather than the brand printed on the card. Check every account number and payoff amount before authorizing payment. After funding:
- Confirm that each intended creditor received the correct amount.
- Continue the card’s minimum payment until the payment posts.
- Look for residual interest or a small remaining balance on the next statement.
- Turn off automatic card payments only after checking that no payment is pending and that the account will not be overdrawn.
- Check your credit reports later to confirm the accounts report accurately as paid or at the expected balance.
Where to start by credit profile and debt size
Excellent credit, a large balance, and no-fee priority
Start with LightStream, SoFi, U.S. Bank if eligible, and PenFed. Add Happen Bank as a direct-pay comparison. LightStream and SoFi advertise loans up to $100,000, while Happen Bank advertises up to $75,000. A larger maximum is not a reason to borrow more than necessary.

Compare SoFi, Happen Bank, LightStream, Upgrade, and Achieve through soft-pull prequalification where available. High utilization can affect underwriting even when the score appears strong. Also expect lenders to consider income, debt-to-income ratio, recent delinquencies, requested amount, and term.
Fair credit
Upgrade, Achieve, and Happen Bank may be more realistic starting points. Concentrate on net proceeds and total cost, not the starting APR. A personal-loan offer near 30% to 36%, especially with a large fee, may save little or nothing compared with your cards.
Credit score below approximately 640
Obtain quotes only if the prequalified APR is materially below your current weighted card APR and the payment is affordable. Achieve discloses a possible 560 minimum for some loans, but that does not guarantee approval. At the same time, contact your creditors and a nonprofit credit counselor. A high-cost loan can turn revolving debt into a fixed payment without making repayment realistic.
Debt below approximately $5,000
Many major personal-loan products start at $5,000. For a smaller balance, compare a 0% balance-transfer card, an issuer hardship plan, and an accelerated direct-payoff strategy. Borrowing more than needed to satisfy a minimum loan amount can increase the cost.

Alternatives that may be better than a personal loan
| Option | Usually best for | Potential advantage | Important risk or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal consolidation loan | A borrower who qualifies for a meaningfully lower APR and can afford the fixed payment | One installment payment and a defined payoff date | Fees, hard inquiry, unaffordable payment, or new card balances can eliminate the benefit. |
| 0% balance-transfer card | Strong credit and a plan to repay during the promotional period | Potentially no interest during the introductory period | Transfer fee, limited credit line, expiration date, high post-promotion APR, and possible loss of promotional terms after a late payment. |
| Nonprofit debt-management plan | A borrower who cannot obtain a cheap enough loan or needs payment-management support | One payment to a counseling organization; counselors may obtain lower rates or reduced fees | Debt is not erased, fees may apply, and enrolled cards may need to be closed or restricted. |
| Issuer hardship program | A borrower struggling but not yet in default | The issuer may lower payments, reduce the rate, waive fees, or change the due date | Programs may be temporary and may freeze or close the card. |
| Home-equity loan or HELOC | Only selected homeowners with stable repayment capacity who understand the collateral risk | Potentially lower rate than an unsecured loan | The home secures the debt; a HELOC may have a variable rate, and failure to repay can threaten the home. |
| Debt settlement | A borrower who cannot realistically repay in full and has received advice about the consequences | May negotiate a reduced payoff in some cases | Not consolidation; can involve missed payments, credit damage, collections, lawsuits, fees, and tax consequences. |
| Bankruptcy consultation | A borrower who cannot make minimum payments even after reducing expenses | Professional evaluation of legal options | Requires individualized legal advice and has significant financial and credit consequences. |
0% balance-transfer card
A balance-transfer card can be cheaper than a personal loan if you can repay the transferred amount before the promotional period ends. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau warns that these offers generally have limited promotional periods and commonly charge a percentage-based transfer fee.

Before choosing one, calculate the required monthly payment as:
(transferred balance + transfer fee) ÷ number of promotional months
Check the transfer limit, fee, expiration date, post-promotional APR, late-payment rules, and whether new purchases will complicate the payoff. Do not transfer a balance merely because the introductory rate is 0% if the payment needed to finish on time is unrealistic.
Nonprofit debt-management plan
Under a debt-management plan, you generally make one payment to a counseling organization, which distributes payments to participating creditors. Counselors may negotiate lower rates or reduced fees, but they do not erase the principal. Setup and monthly fees may apply.
Ask whether every creditor participates, the total fees, the expected payoff date, whether cards must be closed or restricted, what happens after a late payment, and whether the organization is genuinely nonprofit and reputable. The U.S. Trustee’s approved-agency list is a useful starting point, although inclusion is not an endorsement of any particular agency.
Credit-card hardship program
Contact the card issuer before missing a payment. The CFPB says issuers may sometimes reduce payments, lower rates, waive fees, or change due dates. Ask whether the arrangement is temporary, whether interest continues to accrue, whether the card will be frozen or closed, how the account will be reported, and what payment is required. Get the terms in writing.

Home-equity loan or HELOC
A home-equity product may advertise a lower rate, but that is not an unqualified advantage. Credit-card debt is generally unsecured; using home equity makes the home collateral. A HELOC may also carry a variable rate. The CFPB specifically warns that using home equity to consolidate credit-card debt can be risky.
Debt settlement and debt-relief companies
Debt settlement is not the same as debt consolidation. A settlement company typically attempts to resolve debts for less than the full balance, often after accounts become delinquent. That can lead to credit damage, collection activity, lawsuits, fees, and possible tax issues.
The Federal Trade Commission warns consumers to avoid companies that demand upfront fees, guarantee results, promise special government programs, or tell you to stop communicating with creditors without clearly explaining the consequences. Read the FTC’s debt-relief scam guidance before paying a company.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Credit effects and what to do with paid-off cards
Applying for a loan can create a hard inquiry and a new account. Paying down card balances can reduce revolving utilization, which may help credit profiles, but a score increase is not guaranteed. The new inquiry, new account, missed payment, or additional debt can have negative effects.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not automatically close every paid-off card. Closing accounts can reduce available credit and increase utilization, and account age may matter. On the other hand, keeping every card open is risky if it makes new spending easy. A practical plan may be to lock or remove cards from shopping accounts, keep one low-limit card for a controlled recurring bill or emergency, and avoid closing accounts without considering the credit and behavioral consequences.
Common ways consolidation fails
- The loan APR is lower, but the term is much longer. Total interest can rise even as the payment falls.
- The fee consumes the expected savings. A 5% fee on $20,000 is $1,000; an 8% fee is $1,600.
- The balance was temporarily at 0%. Replacing a promotional balance with a paid loan can cost more if you could have paid the card before the promotion ended.
- The borrower borrows more than the card balances. Extra proceeds increase principal and can undermine the payoff plan.
- The highest-rate card remains. Partial consolidation may leave the expensive debt untouched.
- The borrower uses the cards again. The result can be a personal-loan payment plus new revolving balances.
- The lender pays the wrong account or amount. Confirm account numbers, issuing banks, payoff figures, and posting dates.
- The borrower stops paying too soon. Interest or minimum-payment obligations can continue until the creditor posts the payment.
- The offer is approved but economically harmful. A 30% to 36% APR plus a high fee may provide little savings over card debt.
- The home is pledged for a marginal rate improvement. A lower rate does not justify risking the home without a careful, stable repayment plan.
How to handle conflicting rates and loan amounts online
Personal-loan terms change, and comparison sites may display different products or older information. Use the lender’s current official disclosure as the primary reference, then compare the final offer.
- Upgrade’s official page currently lists $1,000 to $50,000, while some comparison coverage has shown offers up to $75,000. Marketplace availability or a different product may explain the difference.
- Happen Bank’s official disclosures show slightly different maximum APR figures, 35.96% and 35.99%, depending on the page and update date.
- Older pages may call Happen Bank LendingClub, even though the name change took effect June 22, 2026.
- Forbes, Bankrate, and NerdWallet use different editorial methods and therefore choose different winners. Forbes says it evaluated 45 products from 38 providers, while Bankrate says it evaluated more than 50 lenders. Those rankings are frameworks, not proof that one lender will be cheapest for you.
Also treat lender-reported savings or credit-score improvements as non-guaranteed. For example, Happen Bank reports an average FICO increase for a particular Direct Pay population, but says individual results are not guaranteed. A calculation based on your own balances and offers is more useful than an average marketing claim.
When you should not consolidate
Do not take the loan if:
- The final APR is close to or above your current weighted card APR.
- The origination fee consumes the expected interest savings.
- The payment is unaffordable after necessary expenses and an emergency reserve.
- You are already delinquent and the loan would only postpone default.
- You can repay a 0% balance-transfer offer before its promotional period ends at a lower total cost.
- You must secure the debt with your home for only a modest rate improvement.
- The loan does not pay off the balances that matter most.
- You have no plan to stop creating new card balances.
If no lender offers a materially cheaper, affordable loan, contact your card issuers about hardship options and speak with a nonprofit counselor. If you cannot make minimum payments even after cutting expenses, consider a consultation with a qualified bankruptcy attorney rather than borrowing simply to delay an inevitable default.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a credit-card consolidation loan?
It is usually an unsecured personal installment loan used to pay off multiple credit-card balances. You replace several revolving payments with one scheduled payment and a defined payoff date. The debt is not forgiven, and the loan helps only if its total cost and payment are manageable.
Is credit-card consolidation the same as debt settlement?
No. Consolidation combines debts, commonly through a personal loan, while debt settlement attempts to negotiate a payoff for less than the full amount. Settlement can involve missed payments, credit damage, collections, lawsuits, fees, and possible tax consequences.
Does consolidating credit-card debt hurt your credit score?
The loan application may create a hard inquiry and a new account. Paying off card balances can reduce utilization, which may help, but a score increase is not guaranteed. Missed payments, new debt, or closing cards can produce negative effects.
What credit score do I need for a consolidation loan?
There is no universal minimum. Lenders also consider income, debt-to-income ratio, utilization, payment history, loan amount, term, and state. Achieve currently discloses a possible 560 minimum for some loans and at least 660 for loans of $35,000 or more, but those figures do not guarantee approval or a low rate.
Can I consolidate credit-card debt with bad credit?
You may qualify with some lenders, but an approval near 30% to 36% APR plus an origination fee may not save money. Prequalify where possible, compare the all-in cost, and simultaneously contact creditors and a nonprofit credit counselor.
Is a 0% balance-transfer card better than a personal loan?
It can be cheaper if you can repay the transferred balance during the promotional period. Include the transfer fee, calculate the payment required to finish on time, and check the post-promotion APR, transfer limit, and late-payment rules.
Can I consolidate $5,000, $20,000, or $50,000?
Often, yes, but minimums and maximums vary. Happen Bank lists $1,000 to $75,000; SoFi and LightStream list up to $100,000; Upgrade lists $1,000 to $50,000; and Achieve lists $5,000 to $50,000. The amount you receive depends on underwriting, income, debt, state, and the final offer.
Can a lender pay my credit cards directly?
Some do. Happen Bank, Upgrade, Achieve, SoFi, and PenFed advertise creditor-payment features, while LightStream does not directly pay creditors. Eligibility, creditor networks, payment percentages, and discounts vary. Continue making minimum payments until each creditor confirms the payment posted.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should I close my credit cards after consolidation?
Not automatically. Closing cards can reduce available credit and increase utilization, but keeping cards open can make it easier to rebuild debt. Consider locking cards, removing stored numbers, limiting use to a controlled bill, and closing accounts only after weighing both risks.
Can I consolidate credit-card debt while unemployed?
Approval generally depends on the lender’s income and repayment-capacity requirements, so unemployment can make qualifying difficult. Do not borrow if the payment is not affordable. Contact issuers about hardship programs and a nonprofit counselor before applying repeatedly.
What should I do if I am already late on my card payments?
Call each issuer promptly and request a hardship review. Continue paying what you can, ask about rate or fee relief, and contact a nonprofit credit counselor. A new loan may be unavailable or may only delay default if your budget cannot support the payment.
Is using home equity to consolidate cards a good idea?
It may offer a lower rate, but the home becomes collateral. A HELOC may also have a variable rate. The CFPB warns that using home equity for credit-card consolidation is risky, so do not treat the lower rate as a sufficient reason by itself.
Are debt-consolidation companies legitimate?
Some are legitimate, but a company selling debt settlement is not offering the same service as a consolidation lender. Be cautious of upfront fees, guaranteed results, claims about special government programs, or instructions to stop communicating with creditors. Consider nonprofit counseling and review the FTC’s debt-relief scam guidance.
What if no lender offers a rate below my credit-card APR?
Do not force a consolidation loan. Ask card issuers about hardship programs, compare a nonprofit debt-management plan, and consider a 0% transfer only if you can meet its payoff schedule. If minimum payments are impossible, obtain qualified legal advice about broader options.
The Bottom Line
The bottom line
Choose a credit-card consolidation loan only after comparing the final APR, fees, net proceeds, payment, term, and total repayment against your existing balances. Happen Bank is a strong direct-pay candidate for many borrowers; SoFi and LightStream deserve attention from strong-credit, no-fee shoppers; Upgrade and Achieve may widen access but require careful fee analysis; and U.S. Bank and PenFed are worthwhile traditional-bank and credit-union comparisons. If the loan is not materially cheaper and comfortably affordable, a hardship program, 0% transfer, nonprofit debt-management plan, or professional financial counseling may be the better answer.
