The company announced a larger, $545 million Series G in August 2026, and a contemporaneous Puget Sound Business Journal preview reported another plan to triple its Seattle employees. Neither report establishes how many Seattle hires Whatnot ultimately made. GeekWire’s October 2025 report and Whatnot’s August 2026 announcement put the original headline in context.
What the $225 million headline refers to
On October 30, 2025, GeekWire reported that Whatnot had raised $225 million at an $11.5 billion valuation. The company also planned to hire more than 75 people in the Seattle region over the following six months, a target described as tripling its local headcount. That was an announced goal, not confirmation that the hiring happened.

GeekWire said Whatnot’s downtown Seattle office had opened earlier in 2025. The Seattle team’s work included product and engineering, with focus areas such as machine learning, marketplace integrity, and trust and safety.
How Whatnot’s funding story changed in 2026
In August 2026, Whatnot announced a $545 million Series G at a $20 billion valuation. That is the latest funding announcement in the available reporting, so the October 2025 $225 million round should not be described as the company’s newest financing. Whatnot’s Series G announcement gives the updated amount and valuation.

A Puget Sound Business Journal search preview dated August 9, 2026 also reported the $545 million raise and said Whatnot planned to triple its Seattle employees. The full article was not available in the preview, so it does not support further detail about the plan or a claim that the goal was reached. The preview is the source for that Seattle hiring update.
What is known about Whatnot’s Seattle presence now
Whatnot’s careers page lists Seattle as a hiring hub. That indicates Seattle remains a location where the company recruits, but it does not establish current local headcount or prove that a particular Seattle job is open. The page also reports company figures of $8 billion in live-stream sales in 2025, more than 560,000 hours of live content hosted per week, and 98 minutes spent per day on the app. These are Whatnot’s own published metrics, not independently validated industry statistics. See Whatnot’s careers page.
The available sources do not verify whether Whatnot met its 2025 target of more than 75 Seattle-area hires or its later reported goal to triple the local team. They do not state a current Seattle headcount.

What Whatnot does
Whatnot is a live-shopping marketplace. Sellers present products in live shows, where buyers can watch, chat, and bid. GeekWire’s 2025 report described the company as Los Angeles-based and founded in 2019, and discussed its marketplace alongside TikTok Shop and Amazon Live. Those details describe the company and market framing in that report; they do not amount to a current comparison of the services.
Whatnot’s company post says, “Small businesses bet on live shopping before anyone else would.” The statement is from the company, and the available post does not identify an individual speaker. Whatnot’s post
