- Choose the security freeze control and follow the prompts to place the freeze.
Experian says its security freeze is free to manage and remains in place until you remove it. A freeze does not affect your credit score, but it limits access to your Experian report. A lender may be unable to review that file when considering a new application.
How to unfreeze or temporarily thaw your Experian file
Experian’s online controls let you either remove the freeze permanently or schedule a temporary thaw for a specified period. Experian says online freeze and unfreeze changes are handled in real time.

| Choice | What happens | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary thaw | Access is restored for the period you schedule, after which the freeze resumes. | You expect a particular credit application or lender review during a defined window. |
| Permanent removal | The freeze is lifted and does not return unless you place it again. | You want your file available for credit checks on an ongoing basis. |
To change the freeze online, sign in through Experian’s Freeze Center and choose the temporary or permanent option. If you are applying for credit, arrange the thaw or removal before the lender attempts to access your file.

A freeze at Experian does not automatically freeze the reports held by TransUnion or Equifax. To freeze all three major bureau files, you must contact each bureau separately. Experian explains the bureau-by-bureau process in its article on fraud alerts and credit freezes.
A credit freeze is different from a fraud alert
A credit freeze limits access to the report. A fraud alert instead asks creditors to verify your identity before granting credit. They are different protections, and neither one automatically places the other.
