The best way to use Facebook Marketplace is to treat it as two different marketplaces: local pickup and structured checkout with shipping. Use narrow searches and saved listings to find deals, inspect the item and seller before committing, write precise listings when selling, verify payments in the actual payment account, and never allow urgency to replace verification.

Local Marketplace is often the right choice for furniture, appliances, vehicles, and bulky goods, but it usually leaves inspection, payment, returns, and safety arrangements to the buyer and seller. Checkout and shipping can provide a more structured process and potential protection for eligible purchases, but the feature is not available to every account or location and still involves shipping, condition, return, delivery, and dispute risks. Menu names and features can vary by country, account, device, and Facebook app version. If you do not see an option described here, Meta may not have enabled it for your account. Meta explains Marketplace availability here.

What Facebook Marketplace is—and is not

Facebook Marketplace connects people who want to buy and sell items in their communities. In a local transaction, however, it may function little more than an advertisement followed by a private arrangement between two strangers.

Marketplace is not automatically:

  • an escrow service holding the buyer’s money;
  • a product-authentication service;
  • a warranty provider;
  • a guarantee that an item is genuine, safe, or legally owned; or
  • a universal dispute-resolution or refund system.

Meta’s policies prohibit or restrict many listings, but a policy does not mean Facebook has independently inspected every item, verified every seller, or confirmed that a profile belongs to the person using it. A structured checkout transaction may provide additional processes and potential protection, but it does not eliminate counterfeit goods, inaccurate descriptions, non-delivery, damage, returns, payment disputes, or fraud.

In the United States, users generally must be at least 18, have an active account in a supported country, and use their main Facebook profile. New or inactive accounts, additional profiles, and accounts with policy violations may have restricted access. Meta also says businesses may be blocked from listing or may have listings removed under its access guidance. See Meta’s Marketplace access requirements and its troubleshooting guidance.

Current-status note: This guide reflects Marketplace information available on August 9, 2026. Meta changes features frequently and rolls some options out by account, location, device, or test group. Meta announced in November 2025 that it was launching or testing collections, collaborative buying, reactions and comments, AI-suggested questions, vehicle insights, partner inventory from eBay and Poshmark, and improved visibility for shipping costs and taxes. Those are rollout or test features—not capabilities every reader should expect to see. Read Meta’s announcement.

Start by choosing local pickup or checkout and shipping

Before searching or listing, decide which transaction model fits the item. The choice affects convenience, costs, safety, inspection, and the protections that may be available.

Situation Better default Why
Bulky furniture or appliances Local pickup Shipping is expensive, difficult, and vulnerable to damage.
Cheap item Local pickup or a bundle Shipping can cost more than the item.
Small, standardized item Checkout and shipping, if available A structured order can make comparison and delivery easier.
Fragile collectible Local inspection or a specialist marketplace Condition, packing, and authenticity are central to the transaction.
Vehicle In-person inspection and official records Marketplace alone cannot replace title, lien, history, and mechanical checks.
Luxury item or rare good Specialist authentication or in-person verification Counterfeit and provenance risks are significant.
The other party cannot meet safely Do not proceed, or use an eligible structured shipping method Convenience is not worth an unsafe exchange.
A buyer wants to ship an ordinary local listing Pause and verify everything This is a common pattern in shipping and fake-payment scams.

Meta says shipping and checkout are not available to all users. A local-pickup purchase is also treated differently from an eligible purchase made with checkout: Facebook-provided returns and refunds are not available for local-pickup purchases in the same way. Review Meta’s explanation of local and checkout transactions, along with its pages on selling with shipping and returns.

How to find better deals as a buyer

Use the search tools precisely

In the Facebook app or on the web:

  1. Open Marketplace.
  2. Search for a specific product or browse a category.
  3. Set the correct city, ZIP code, neighborhood, or map location.
  4. Adjust the distance radius.
  5. Apply category and other available filters.
  6. Sort by Suggested, Distance, or Date listed, where those options appear.
  7. Save promising listings.
  8. Turn on Marketplace notifications for saved searches if that option is available in your app.

Meta documents searching by item, category, location, distance, and filters. Its documented sorting choices include suggested results, distance, and date listed. See how to find items, how to sort listings, and Marketplace notification settings.

Search more than one way

Sellers often use incomplete or inconsistent titles. Search using:

  • the brand and exact model number;
  • a model family instead of the exact model;
  • common abbreviations and misspellings;
  • individual components instead of a bundle, such as a camera lens rather than a camera kit;
  • descriptive terms such as pickup, moving, estate, garage, or must go.

Terms such as moving or must go may identify legitimate sellers who need to clear an item quickly, but a very low price and urgency can also be scam signals. There is no reliable public evidence that one universal posting time, repeated relisting strategy, keyword, emoji, or algorithm trick consistently produces better results.

Compare the real price, not just the asking price

Before contacting a seller, compare several current Marketplace listings and, when possible, completed-sale prices on another marketplace. Also check:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the new retail price;
  • the refurbished price;
  • condition and age;
  • included accessories;
  • warranty status;
  • shipping costs and taxes; and
  • the value of obtaining the item locally and immediately.

A low price is not automatically a bargain. It may reflect missing parts, a defect, counterfeit goods, a stolen item, an unresolved vehicle lien, or a fake listing.

How to evaluate a listing and seller

Look for a complete, internally consistent listing

A credible listing should make it possible to understand what you would actually receive. Look for:

  • actual photos rather than only stock images;
  • multiple angles and close-ups of damage, labels, ports, seams, screens, and defects;
  • the exact brand, model, size, year, version, or dimensions;
  • a condition description that matches the photos;
  • a clear list of what is included;
  • the pickup area or shipping terms; and
  • whether the price applies to the entire lot or only one piece.

For electronics, Meta recommends accurate condition information, high-quality photos, and disclosure of flaws. It also warns against misleadingly low prices. See Meta’s electronics guidance.

Use the seller profile as a signal—not proof

Where visible, a Marketplace profile may show the seller’s picture, ratings, when the account was created, other listings, and Marketplace activity. Check whether the profile, location, story, and other listings make sense together. Ratings and written reviews can be useful context, but they are not authentication. Meta says ratings are not independently verified as proof that the reviewer purchased or used the item, and ratings may become public after five or more eligible ratings. Review Meta’s Marketplace scam guidance and its rating information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A convincing profile is still not proof of legitimacy. Accounts can be compromised, fabricated, or used by someone other than the apparent owner. A long-standing account, mutual connection, friendly tone, seller badge, or positive rating cannot establish that the exact item exists or is genuine.

Red flags that should stop the transaction

  • The price is dramatically below comparable items without a credible explanation.
  • The seller uses only stock photos or refuses to provide a current photo.
  • The seller will not answer basic questions about condition, model, ownership, or location.
  • The story changes when you ask for verification.
  • The seller immediately pushes you to text, email, WhatsApp, a separate payment page, or an outside link.
  • You are pressured to pay a deposit before inspection.
  • The seller claims many buyers are waiting and demands an immediate transfer.
  • A third party, mover, shipping company, escrow agent, or insurance fee appears unexpectedly.
  • The seller asks for a login, one-time code, Social Security number, unnecessary ID copy, gift card, cryptocurrency, wire transfer, or overpayment refund.

One warning sign may have an innocent explanation. Several together are a reason to walk away, report the listing, and block the account.

Message sellers with a plan

Replace the low-information message Is this available? with a message that demonstrates you have read the listing and can complete the transaction:

Hi, I’m interested in the [exact item]. Is it still available? I can pick it up at [reasonable time] and will bring [vehicle or equipment needed]. Does everything shown in the photos come with it?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an electronic item, ask:

Does it power on, charge, connect to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and function without an account lock? Please confirm the model number and whether the charger is included.

For furniture or a large item, ask:

What are the exact dimensions? Are there stairs, an elevator, pets, smoke exposure, or disassembly requirements?

Keep communication inside Facebook until the transaction is sufficiently verified. Do not send login credentials, one-time verification codes, bank details, Social Security numbers, unnecessary copies of identification, or your home address before a legitimate plan requires it. Meta advises communicating on Facebook and ending communication when suspicious activity appears. Read Meta’s responsible-buying guidance.

Negotiate rationally

Make a specific, credible offer

Instead of asking for the seller’s lowest price, connect your offer to a concrete plan:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Would you take $X if I pick it up today at [time]?

If the offer is below the asking price, identify an observable reason: a missing accessory, visible damage, repair cost, transportation expense, or comparable listings at a lower price. Do not negotiate against yourself by making a series of progressively lower offers without new information.

Know when not to negotiate

For scarce or highly desirable items, a prompt, reasonable offer with a specific pickup time may be more effective than an aggressive low offer. If the asking price is already below comparable sales, the seller may prioritize certainty and speed over another small discount.

Be especially cautious about deposits

Do not pay a deposit for an ordinary local item that you have not inspected. Deposits are particularly risky for cars, apartments, tickets, high-end electronics, and any item you cannot verify. For vehicles and housing, title records, lease rules, local law, and specialized documentation matter more than a Marketplace conversation.

How to create a listing that sells

Current listing steps on desktop

  1. From Feed, open Marketplace.
  2. Select Create new listing.
  3. Select Item for sale.
  4. Upload photos; video may also be available.
  5. Enter the item details and actual price.
  6. Select Next.
  7. Select Publish.

Meta’s desktop instructions are here. If you are giving an item away, Meta’s instructions state that you can enter 0 as the price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Current listing steps on iPhone or Android

  1. Open Facebook’s Menu.
  2. Open Marketplace; select See more if necessary.
  3. Tap Sell.
  4. Tap Create listing.
  5. Choose the listing type.
  6. Add or take photos.
  7. Add details; use More listing options for additional fields.
  8. Choose a category.
  9. Where eligible, choose additional places to list the item, such as buy-and-sell groups or your profile.
  10. Publish the listing.

See Meta’s mobile instructions. Labels and paths vary by app version, device, country, and account.

Use photos to answer questions before they are asked

  1. Make the first photo a clean, uncluttered view of the entire item.
  2. Add several well-lit angles.
  3. Photograph flaws close up.
  4. Show model and serial labels when appropriate, but do not publicly expose information that could be misused.
  5. Show included accessories, packaging, manuals, remotes, tools, and mounting hardware.
  6. Use a scale reference or measuring tape for dimensions.
  7. Show an electronic device powered on.

Blur children, license plates, mail labels, account information, and other personal details in the background. Meta may enhance listing photos and videos and may select a cover image based on photo or video quality and listing accuracy, so make the first image representative rather than relying on a decorative image. See the listing guidance.

Write a searchable, specific title

A useful formula is:

Brand + exact model + key specification + condition

Avoid titles such as Must go!!!, Nice item, or Read description. Buyers search for the item, model, size, and relevant specification—not a vague promise that it is a deal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Give buyers the facts in the description

Include:

  • what the item is;
  • the exact model or dimensions;
  • age, if known;
  • condition and visible wear;
  • defects, repairs, and functional limitations;
  • what is included and excluded;
  • pet or smoke exposure where relevant;
  • reason for sale, if useful;
  • pickup area, without unnecessarily publishing your home address;
  • payment and meetup expectations; and
  • whether the price is firm, negotiable, or a starting point.

Honest disclosure may reduce the number of casual inquiries, but it also reduces wasted trips, post-sale arguments, returns, and accusations that the item was misrepresented.

Choose the condition label honestly

Meta documents these condition categories:

  • New: brand new, never worn or used, undamaged, ideally in original packaging.
  • Used—like new: previously used but in excellent condition with no visible wear or defect.
  • Used—good: minor wear, operational, and works as intended.
  • Used—fair: visible wear or minor defects but still usable; possible pet or smoke exposure can be relevant.
  • Refurbished: put through a refurbishing process, generally involving inspection, replacement of defective parts, cleaning, and repackaging.

Do not select like new merely because the item works. The label, photographs, and description should tell the same story. Read Meta’s condition definitions.

Price for your actual goal

There is no universal Facebook Marketplace pricing formula. Start with several comparable listings, distinguish active asking prices from completed-sale evidence where possible, and adjust for condition, age, accessories, local demand, seasonality, brand, and transportation.

Choose your objective before choosing the number:

  • Maximum price: price closer to the high end of credible comparable sales and accept a longer holding period.
  • Fast sale: price competitively and offer a concrete pickup window.
  • Minimum effort: price for convenience and avoid extended negotiation.
  • Clearing many items: bundle related goods, state exactly what the lot contains, and consider a lower per-item price.

Watch the quality of inquiries, not only views. Many views with no serious messages may mean the price, photos, category, or description is wrong. Several messages asking whether the item is available may indicate demand, but they do not guarantee that anyone will show up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Pricing choice Likely trade-off
Higher price More room to negotiate, but fewer inquiries and a longer wait.
Lower price More interest and potentially a faster sale, but greater risk of underpricing and attracting scammers.
Firm bottom-dollar price Less negotiation, but some buyers may assume flexibility is expected.
Artificially low price, such as $1 Confusion, low-quality inquiries, and possible policy issues if it misleads buyers.

Meta warns against misleadingly low prices. Do not assume that a price ending in .99, posting at a particular hour, repeatedly deleting and relisting, or using certain keywords reliably improves ranking or sales. Review Meta’s pricing and electronics guidance.

Build trust without oversharing

Trust is earned through accurate details and dependable behavior, not exaggerated claims. Reply clearly, give realistic pickup windows, answer direct questions, and mark an item pending or sold promptly. If a transaction is completed successfully, you can ask the buyer to leave a rating. Meta lists badges such as Active local seller, Very responsive, Highly rated, Super seller, and Top shipper in relevant locations.

Badges and ratings are signals, not proof that an item is genuine, safe, or even in the seller’s possession. Meta says it does not verify that reviewers purchased or used the item. See seller badge information.

Complete a local exchange safely

These measures reduce risk; they do not guarantee safety.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Agree on the location before traveling.
  2. Choose a public, well-lit place with people nearby.
  3. Do not change the agreed location at the last minute.
  4. Tell a trusted person where you are going and when you expect to return.
  5. Use Messenger’s meeting-plan feature if available.
  6. Share live location where appropriate.
  7. Keep your phone charged.
  8. Bring another person for a high-value or bulky transaction when practical.
  9. Do not disclose your home address unnecessarily.
  10. Inspect the item before paying.
  11. For a pickup at a home, control the interaction, secure valuables, and bring help for heavy items.
  12. Leave if the person, location, item, or story does not feel right.

Meta recommends public, well-lit meeting areas, sharing a meeting plan, not changing the agreed location, carrying a charged phone, and avoiding excessive cash. Read Meta’s meetup safety guidance. Some police departments offer designated safe-exchange areas, but not all do; check with your local department instead of assuming one exists.

Verify payment—not screenshots

The practical rule for a local sale is simple: do not release the item until payment is visibly confirmed in your own account or handed over in an accepted form.

Common fake-payment patterns

A scammer may:

  1. claim to have paid;
  2. send a screenshot or fake email;
  3. ask you to release or ship the item;
  4. say the payment is pending until you upgrade an account, pay a fee, or provide a code; or
  5. overpay and ask you to return the difference.

The payment may never have existed, or it may later be reversed. Meta warns about fake payment emails, screenshots, overpayments, gift cards, verification codes, and requests to move communications outside Marketplace. The FTC also describes fake payment notifications, fake checks, overpayment schemes, and verification-code scams targeting online sellers. See Meta’s scam guidance and the FTC’s advice for online sellers.

Never click a payment link supplied in an unexpected message. Open the bank or payment provider’s official app or website independently. Do not send a refund, gift card, fee, or verification code in response to a buyer’s claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cash and digital payments have different risks

  • Cash at an in-person exchange: avoids fake online confirmations, but requires attention to counterfeit currency, personal safety, and handling.
  • Person-to-person payment: convenient, but verify it directly in the actual payment app and understand that the provider’s fraud and chargeback rules are separate from Facebook’s policies.
  • Credit card or structured checkout: may offer stronger dispute options for eligible online purchases, but may not be available for a local Marketplace sale and can introduce fees or chargebacks.

Meta says eligible checkout purchases may be covered by Purchase Protection, while in-person transactions using cash or person-to-person payment methods are not eligible for that Facebook protection. The FTC advises buyers to prefer credit cards or secure systems with buyer protections and to avoid wire transfers, gift cards, cryptocurrency, and payments outside a marketplace’s protected system. Read about Purchase Protection and the FTC’s online-marketplace payment advice.

Understand checkout, shipping, and protection

If shipping and checkout are available for your account and item, read the transaction terms before accepting an order. A seller may need to provide identity, tax, bank, or payment information and meet shipping and handling requirements. Buyers should check tracking independently on the carrier’s website rather than relying only on a screenshot.

Shipping creates a larger buyer pool and a more structured order workflow, but it also introduces packing damage, delivery delays, non-delivery claims, returns, counterfeit claims, and chargebacks. It does not turn Facebook into an authentication service or eliminate disputes.

Keep these systems separate:

  • Meta Purchase Protection: may cover eligible purchases made through checkout, subject to the applicable terms and deadlines.
  • Meta Seller Protection: has its own eligibility requirements and limitations; it is not automatic insurance for every seller or transaction.
  • Payment-provider disputes: are governed by the provider’s rules.
  • Credit-card chargebacks: are controlled by the card issuer and network, not by a Marketplace badge.
  • Local cash transactions: generally have no Facebook-provided purchase-protection mechanism.

Meta’s current merchant policy says that for Individual Sellers using onsite checkout, an order may be automatically canceled if it has not been fulfilled within three business days. The policy also says seller protection is currently limited to the United States and generally to covered items with a sale price of $2,000 or less, subject to conditions. Meta says sellers should respond to certain item-not-as-described refund requests within two business days; failure to respond can result in a refund at the seller’s loss. These are policy conditions, not guarantees. Read the current Meta merchant and seller-protection policies.

Category-specific checks

Phones, laptops, and other electronics

Before selling

  • Back up the device.
  • Sign out of accounts and remove activation locks or device-management locks.
  • Factory-reset it.
  • Remove SIM and memory cards.
  • Record the serial number privately; for a phone, record the IMEI privately.
  • Test charging, battery, screen, cameras, ports, speakers, microphones, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular connectivity, and buttons.
  • Disclose repairs, replaced parts, battery health, lock status, and defects.

Photograph the model and condition, but do not publish a full IMEI or serial number unnecessarily. Meta specifically recommends removing personal information, recording the serial number, and considering the IMEI for mobile phones. See Meta’s electronics checklist.

Before buying

  • Confirm the exact model and storage.
  • Power it on and test the main functions.
  • Confirm it is not activation-locked.
  • Verify the serial number or IMEI where appropriate.
  • Check for carrier or account restrictions.
  • Inspect the screen, ports, battery, casing, and charging equipment.
  • Confirm every accessory included in the price.

For an expensive device, meet somewhere with power or connectivity when practical. Do not rely only on a screenshot or the seller’s statement that a device is unlocked.

Vehicles

Buying a vehicle on Marketplace requires more than comparing photos and monthly payments. See it in person, match the VIN on the vehicle to the title and records, check for liens and salvage or flood branding, obtain an independent vehicle-history report, and arrange an inspection by a qualified mechanic. Confirm title-transfer requirements with your state DMV.

Never pay a deposit simply because the seller says other buyers are waiting. Be skeptical of stories involving a third-party shipping company, escrow agent, insurance fee, or remote delivery arrangement. Meta recommends checking trusted pricing sources, obtaining a vehicle-history report, and arranging an inspection before buying a car. Read Meta’s vehicle guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Furniture and appliances

Confirm exact dimensions, stairs and elevator access, disassembly requirements, odors, pests, mold, water damage, smoke or pet exposure, electrical cords and plugs, and whether the item will fit in your vehicle. Clarify who is responsible for moving it. Do not assume that a seller offering delivery is insured or affiliated with Facebook.

Baby and child products

Do not casually assume a used crib, bassinet, car seat, stroller, play yard, or other child product is safe. Check current recalls, expiration dates where applicable, missing parts, crash history for car seats, and current safety standards before buying or listing.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission states that selling recalled consumer products is illegal in the United States, including secondhand sales online. A recalled product may be eligible for resale only after the recall remedy has been applied and the listing makes that clear. Check the CPSC resale guidance and its online-sale FAQ.

Luxury goods, watches, jewelry, tickets, and collectibles

Require stronger evidence when authenticity is central: proof of purchase where available, serial numbers, authentication documents, clear provenance, expert inspection, or an in-person examination before payment. A Marketplace profile, badge, positive rating, or polished photograph does not authenticate a luxury item, collectible, ticket, or watch. If the item’s value depends on authenticity or condition, a specialist marketplace, auction house, dealer, or independent authenticator may be a better channel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Know what cannot be listed

Meta prohibits or restricts many categories. Examples include non-physical items such as requests, jokes, news, lost-and-found posts, or wanted posts; services; animals and animal products, subject to limited adoption exceptions; healthcare products; recalled products; discriminatory listing preferences; counterfeit goods; and other goods restricted by Meta’s Commerce Policies or local law.

This is not an exhaustive list. Review Meta’s prohibited-items summary, its guidance on discriminatory listings, and the current Commerce Policies before listing a regulated, branded, safety-sensitive, or unusual item.

Marketplace listing limits matter to frequent sellers

Meta’s current Help Center page states that new Marketplace listings are limited per calendar month to:

  • 5 listings in Vehicles;
  • 5 listings in Auto Parts and Accessories;
  • 5 listings in Homes for Sale or Rent; and
  • 20 total listings.

The limits reset on the first day of each month. Deleted listings still count toward the limit for the month in which they were created. That makes repeated delete-and-recreate experiments especially wasteful. Keep a record of listing numbers and edit an existing listing when possible. Check Meta’s current listing-limit page before planning a larger resale operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manage the listing after publication

Meta documents listing states including Available, Pending, Sold, and Shipped.

To edit a listing on desktop:

  1. Open Marketplace.
  2. Select Selling.
  3. Select Your listings.
  4. Open Options.
  5. Select Edit listing.
  6. Update the details.

See Meta’s editing instructions. On mobile, the exact controls may be arranged differently.

When marked Sold, the listing is no longer visible to other Marketplace users, people who messaged about it receive a sold message, and the conversation may be archived. When marked Pending, existing interested buyers are told the sale is pending and new buyers can see that status. See Meta’s status guidance.

A practical seller workflow is:

  1. Keep the listing available until a specific buyer and pickup time are agreed.
  2. Mark it pending only when the buyer is genuinely committed.
  3. Mark it sold immediately after the exchange.
  4. Rate the buyer after completion, if appropriate.

Do not hold an item indefinitely for someone who has not set a time or sent a legitimate payment through an eligible checkout process. If a buyer does not show up, confirm the meeting shortly before leaving, avoid revealing unnecessary personal information, make the listing available again, and move on without a public argument or retaliatory rating.

Taxes and records for U.S. sellers

This is general U.S. information, not personalized tax advice. Tax treatment depends on whether the item was personal property, whether it was sold at a gain, and whether the activity is a business.

  • Selling a personal item for less than its original cost generally creates a personal loss, which is not deductible.
  • Selling a personal item for more than its original cost creates a taxable gain.
  • Repeated resale activity conducted for profit can create broader business and tax obligations.
  • A Form 1099-K reports gross payment information; receiving one does not automatically mean the entire amount is taxable profit.
  • The IRS currently states that third-party settlement organizations generally must issue Form 1099-K when payments for goods or services exceed $20,000 and more than 200 transactions, although a form may be issued below that threshold.
  • State reporting rules and platform practices can differ.

Do not confuse the Form 1099-K reporting threshold with a tax-free threshold. Keep the original purchase price where known, sale price, date sold, platform and payment fees, shipping expenses, repair or refurbishment costs, receipts, tax forms, and messages for high-value transactions. Read the IRS Form 1099-K overview, its guidance on what to do with the form, and its FAQ. If you regularly buy inventory for resale, consult a tax professional.

What to do when something goes wrong

A buyer sends a payment screenshot

  1. Do not hand over or ship the item.
  2. Open the payment app or bank account independently.
  3. Do not click links in the message.
  4. Do not refund or send money.
  5. Preserve the messages and report or block the account.

A buyer overpays

Do not return the difference and do not ship the item. Contact the payment provider through its official app or website. An overpayment can be a fake check, a stolen account, or a payment that will later be reversed.

Someone asks for a verification code

Never share a one-time code. End the conversation and report the account. If you already disclosed information, secure your Facebook, email, phone, and payment accounts through their official security pages and change affected passwords.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A listing is removed

Possible causes include a prohibited category, misleading price, inaccurate or discriminatory wording, recalled or counterfeit goods, or an automated moderation error. Read the removal reason, review the Commerce Policies, correct the title, category, photos, price, or description, and appeal if the item is genuinely allowed. Do not repeatedly recreate the listing: deleted listings can still count toward the monthly limit. Meta provides listing-removal information.

Marketplace disappears

Check whether you are using your main profile, whether you meet the age requirement, whether the account is active, whether the app is current, whether there is a policy restriction, and whether Marketplace is supported in your location. Use Meta’s access troubleshooting guidance.

The item is not as described

Stop using the item if it may be unsafe. Photograph its condition immediately and preserve the listing, messages, receipt, and payment record. Contact the seller promptly.

If the purchase used eligible checkout, use Meta’s support and Purchase Protection process within the applicable deadline. If you paid by card, ask the card issuer about its dispute process. If it was a local cash transaction, understand that Facebook may not provide a refund mechanism.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sellers should respond quickly, compare the complaint with the original listing and photos, preserve relevant messages, and follow the applicable return or shipping policy if checkout was used. Do not assume that deleting a listing ends a dispute.

When another selling channel is better

Marketplace is convenient, but it is not the best fit for every transaction. Consider another channel when:

  • authentication is central to the sale;
  • the item is rare and high-value;
  • the item requires a warranty;
  • the item is regulated or safety-sensitive;
  • the seller needs predictable shipping and dispute rules;
  • the buyer needs financing, escrow, or title services; or
  • the seller operates at a scale where listing limits and manual messaging are inefficient.

eBay may fit standardized shippable goods and a national audience. Specialist marketplaces may be better for collectibles, luxury goods, musical instruments, vehicles, or professional equipment. Local buy-and-sell groups, OfferUp, and Craigslist may work for local goods, but they do not automatically remove scam or safety risks. Buy Nothing or mutual-aid groups are appropriate when the goal is giving an item away rather than maximizing proceeds. Consignment or a dealer sale reduces effort but usually reduces the seller’s net amount.

Buyer checklist

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Facebook Marketplace safe to use?

It can be useful, but safety depends heavily on the transaction. Treat a local listing as an arrangement with a stranger, not as a guaranteed or authenticated purchase. Meet publicly, keep communication in Facebook, inspect before paying, verify payments in your own account, and walk away from urgency, off-platform links, overpayments, or requests for codes.

Does Facebook Marketplace protect buyers?

Eligible purchases made through Marketplace checkout may qualify for Meta Purchase Protection, subject to the applicable terms and deadlines. Typical local transactions paid with cash or person-to-person payment are not covered by Facebook Purchase Protection, and local-pickup purchases do not receive Facebook-provided returns and refunds in the same way as checkout purchases.

What is the best payment method on Facebook Marketplace?

For a local exchange, pay only after inspecting the item and confirm the payment directly in the actual payment app or account. Cash avoids fake online confirmations but has counterfeit-cash and personal-safety risks. For an eligible shipped purchase, use the platform’s structured checkout when available and understand its return and protection terms. Never use gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or a payment link supplied by a stranger.

How many Marketplace listings can I create each month?

Meta’s current Help Center guidance lists five vehicle listings, five auto-parts and accessories listings, five homes-for-sale-or-rent listings, and 20 total listings per calendar month. The limits reset on the first day of each month, and deleted listings still count toward the month’s limit.

Do I have to pay taxes when I sell on Facebook Marketplace?

U.S. tax treatment depends on the item and your activity. A personal item sold for less than its original cost generally produces a nondeductible personal loss; a personal item sold for more than its cost creates a taxable gain. A Form 1099-K reports gross payments and is not automatically taxable profit. Keep purchase, sale, fee, shipping, and repair records, and ask a tax professional about regular resale activity.

The Bottom Line

Use Facebook Marketplace for what it does well: local convenience and access to nearby buyers and sellers. Search narrowly, compare prices, verify the exact item, and choose local pickup or checkout deliberately. A detailed listing and a credible profile are useful signals, not guarantees. Public meetups, independent payment verification, honest condition disclosures, recall checks, and specialized diligence for vehicles and high-value goods will do more to protect your money than any badge or algorithm tactic.
