The Global Fight League (GFL) publicly named former UFC champions Tyron Woodley and Luke Rockhold in its January 2025 draft and inaugural-season plans. That announcement does not establish the terms of any private contracts or confirm that either fighter remains on a current roster. GFL’s event timetable has also changed: its latest cited plan, announced September 24, 2026, calls for an Argentina proof-of-concept event in Q4 2026 and a first full season in 2027. Those are plans, not completed events.
What did GFL announce about Woodley, Rockhold and other fighters?
In a January 22, 2025 release about its virtual draft, GFL presented itself as a team-based MMA league preparing for a 2025 launch. It named Tyron Woodley among the athletes associated with its draft and inaugural-season plans. The announcement is the basis for describing Woodley and other fighters as signings; it does not, by itself, verify executed agreements, exclusivity, guaranteed pay or their later roster status. GFL’s January 2025 draft announcement
The league said more than 420 athletes from 67 countries were competing for 120 roster places. Those are GFL’s published draft figures, not independently audited participation totals. The release’s proposed structure included six city teams: Dubai, London, Los Angeles, Miami, New York and São Paulo.
Luke Rockhold was also publicly associated with GFL’s planned competition. An October 5, 2025 report said the league had announced a proposed Rockhold–Chris Weidman rematch as part of its plans for a 2026 restart, but gave no date or location. That report does not establish that the bout was booked. MMA News’ October 2025 report

What is known about the fighters’ status?
Tyron Woodley
Woodley is a former UFC welterweight champion. The UFC athlete profile records that he lost the title to Kamaru Usman at UFC 235 on March 2, 2019, and lists his last UFC bout as a loss to Vicente Luque at UFC 260 on March 27, 2021. The profile supports his former-champion status; it does not establish a GFL contract or current GFL roster position. UFC’s Tyron Woodley profile
Luke Rockhold and other names
GFL announcements and coverage connected Rockhold and other notable fighters to its plans. The available announcements do not establish the private terms of individual agreements or confirm a current roster for each named athlete. A proposed matchup is not the same as a scheduled bout: the October 2025 Rockhold–Weidman report supplied no date or venue.

When is the Global Fight League expected to hold events?
GFL’s timetable has shifted across its announcements. The dated statements below distinguish original targets from the league’s more recent plans; none should be read as proof that an event or season took place.

|---|---|---|
| January 22, 2025 | The league described a 2025 launch, an April start and six intended city teams. | Original target; the announcement does not establish that the launch happened. |
| March 3, 2026 | GFL Sports & Entertainment announced a public-market launch and a planned 2026 debut season. It also described a public equity raise of up to $5 million. | Company-stated plans and financing figure, not confirmation that a season or the full raise was completed. March 2026 company announcement |
| May 19, 2026 | GFL described New York, Los Angeles, Miami and London as four flagship markets, with expansion to six cities planned by 2028. | A revised market plan; it differs from the six-city slate in the 2025 announcement. May 2026 GFL announcement |
| September 24, 2026 | GFL said it had signed a binding letter of intent with investor Ryan Brockbank for its first independently owned franchise. The company said it had received and deposited a non-refundable initial payment, with the remaining balance payable in 2027. It said the funding would help support an Argentina proof-of-concept event in Q4 2026 and preparations for a first full season in 2027. | The company described the event, season and transaction-related details as forward-looking. The announcement is not confirmation that the event occurred or the franchise transaction was completed. September 2026 GFL announcement |
GFL’s September 24, 2026 release cautioned: “Readers are cautioned not to place undue reliance on forward-looking statements, which speak only as of the date of this release.” The company’s Argentina event and 2027 season should therefore be treated as its stated plans, not as verified outcomes.
