Re:

This Website’s Prices Look Too Good to Be True—Is It a Scam? How to Check Before You Buy

A bargain is not automatically fraudulent—but an unexplained price far below comparable offers deserves careful investigation. Use this go, pause, or walk-away checklist to verify the seller, product, policies, domain, reviews, and payment method. If you already paid, follow the recovery steps for your card, PayPal, bank transfer, gift card, payment app, or cryptocurrency.

Not necessarily—but an unexplained price far below comparable offers is a serious warning sign. Price alone does not prove that an online store is fraudulent. Legitimate clearance, open-box, refurbished, used, discontinued, overstock, marketplace, and foreign-market products can cost substantially less than new merchandise from an authorized retailer.

The safer question is whether you can independently verify the seller, exact product, condition, total delivered price, shipping promise, return policy, and payment protection. If the bargain comes with a lookalike domain, unverifiable business identity, fake urgency, copied content, unclear terms, or a demand for cryptocurrency, gift cards, wire transfers, or an unprotected payment-app transfer, walk away.

This guide is written primarily for U.S. shoppers. A site-specific verdict requires the exact URL, seller name, product, price, payment method, and your country.

When to walk away immediately

Do not buy if an unfamiliar store:

  • Uses a domain that imitates a known brand but is not that brand’s actual website.
  • Cannot provide a verifiable business identity, usable customer-service contact, or realistic return address.
  • Demands cryptocurrency, gift cards, wire transfers, direct bank transfers, or unprotected peer-to-peer payments.
  • Asks you to pay outside a marketplace’s official checkout.
  • Advertises an authentic branded product but cannot explain its source, authorization, or warranty.
  • Uses pressure tactics such as a countdown timer, a supposed closing sale, or an unconfirmed limited inventory claim.
  • Requests extra customs, insurance, release, redelivery, or verification payments after checkout.
  • Asks for unnecessary Social Security, bank-login, one-time-password, or identity-document information.

One severe warning sign can outweigh several superficial positive signals. A professional design, padlock, social-media ad, or five-star review section does not establish that a store will deliver an authentic product or honor a refund.

Why unusually low prices create risk

The Federal Trade Commission warns that unusually low prices can signal a scam. Fake stores may impersonate well-known brands, collect payment or personal information, and then send nothing, a counterfeit, or an item materially different from the advertisement. The FTC advises comparing the offer with other sellers and treating a price that is much lower than comparable offers as probably a scam. It does not set a universal discount percentage at which a purchase becomes fraudulent.

The risk is especially relevant to offers encountered through social media. In 2025, the FTC recorded $2.1 billion in reported losses from scams that started on social media. Shopping scams were the most reported type of social-media scam, and more than 40% of people who reported losing money to a social-media scam said they ordered something shown in an ad. These are reported losses, not all online purchases or a calculated probability that any particular store is fraudulent.

Online shopping problems are also broader than outright non-delivery. A low-price offer may involve:

  • Non-delivery: You pay, but the seller never ships anything.
  • Counterfeit goods: A fake product is presented as an authentic brand.
  • Bait-and-switch: The advertised product is unavailable or replaced with an inferior item.
  • Misdescription: The item is used, refurbished, incomplete, damaged, or a different model even though the presentation suggested otherwise.
  • Dropshipping or a gray-market sale: The item arrives from another country with slower delivery, limited warranty coverage, or impractical international returns.
  • Hidden fees: Shipping, handling, taxes, customs, insurance, memberships, or an auto-renewing subscription make the real cost much higher.
  • Payment or identity theft: The apparent store mainly exists to collect card details, passwords, or personal information.
  • A real but unreliable seller: The business may exist but lack the inventory, customer service, or willingness to fulfill orders and process refunds.

That distinction matters. A counterfeit-product dispute, an unauthorized card charge, a failed delivery, and a legitimate return-policy disagreement are different problems and may require different remedies. A business can also be genuine yet still violate shipping or refund obligations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a low price may be legitimate

Before labeling a bargain a scam, look for a specific explanation that is visible before payment and consistent with the rest of the offer. Plausible explanations include:

  • End-of-season clearance or a discontinued model.
  • Overstock, liquidation, or a temporary promotion.
  • Open-box, returned, used, refurbished, or renewed merchandise.
  • Damaged packaging or missing accessories.
  • A marketplace seller offering a different warranty than the manufacturer.
  • A foreign-market version with different plugs, software, accessories, or warranty coverage.
  • Short-dated or near-expiration inventory.
  • A genuine coupon, first-order offer, or temporary pricing error.

The explanation should match the listing, product condition, warranty, shipping origin, return terms, and seller identity. If a product is advertised as new and authentic but the fine print quietly changes it to refurbished, incomplete, unauthorized, or final sale, do not proceed. A seller should not reveal the real condition only after receiving payment.

Compare the offer correctly—not just the headline price

Use a like-for-like comparison. Record the manufacturer and exact model number, then compare several established retailers and the manufacturer’s own store where possible. Check:

  • Manufacturer, model number, generation, size, color, capacity, and included accessories.
  • Condition: new, used, open-box, refurbished, renewed, damaged, or incomplete.
  • Authenticity, seller authorization, and warranty provider.
  • Delivery speed, shipping origin, and whether the item is actually available.
  • Return destination, return-shipping responsibility, restocking fee, and refund method.
  • Taxes, shipping, handling, customs, membership charges, and other fees.

The FTC’s online-shopping guidance recommends checking the total price, including shipping, handling, taxes, delivery charges, and other fees. It also notes that terms such as refurbished, vintage, and close-out can mean the product is not in perfect condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use a manufacturer’s suggested retail price as the only comparison. A retailer may display a large discount against an outdated or inflated reference price. Compare the exact item’s current total delivered cost with multiple credible offers.

A five-minute verification workflow

1. Copy the exact registered domain

Look at the browser address bar, not the logo or page title. A page may say it is a familiar brand while using an unrelated domain, a misspelling, extra words, or a different top-level domain. A brand’s name in the page title is not evidence that the brand operates the site.

2. Search independently

Do not let the advertisement or suspicious store be your only source. Search the exact seller name and domain with terms such as:

  • seller name scam
  • seller name complaint
  • domain.com review
  • domain.com counterfeit
  • domain.com refund
  • domain.com shipping

Search outside the seller’s own review system. Also look for a consistent legal name, physical address, telephone number, customer-service email, independent business listings, and a history that predates the current advertisement. A state business-registration search can help establish that a matching entity exists, but registration does not prove that the online store is trustworthy, authorized to sell a brand, or capable of fulfilling orders.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Verify the seller through a separate source

For branded goods, type the manufacturer’s known website into your browser or find it through a trusted source—not through the ad. Check its authorized-retailer list or contact customer service using independently obtained contact information. A legitimate brand sale should be confirmable through the brand’s known website, account, or customer service.

This matters because a real company may be an innocent victim of a fake online store using its name, photos, and logo. Complaining to the legitimate company may not identify the payment recipient. Your bank or card statement’s merchant name can be more informative than the brand name in the advertisement.

4. Check the domain, but interpret the result carefully

ICANN Lookup can show publicly available domain-registration information, including the registrar and, when available, registration dates or organization details. A newly registered domain can be a warning sign, but it is not conclusive proof of fraud. An old domain is not proof of a trustworthy current store because domains can change owners or be compromised. Privacy-protected registration is common.

ICANN says its lookup information is provided for informational purposes and does not verify that the registrant’s profile is truthful. Inspect the registered domain itself, rather than trusting a page title, logo, or familiar-looking product photograph.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Check the URL for technical danger

Use Google Safe Browsing’s site-status tool. A warning is a strong reason not to proceed. A clean result is not a retailer legitimacy certificate: Safe Browsing is primarily designed to identify threats such as phishing, malware, and unsafe content, not to verify inventory, authenticity, delivery, customer service, or refunds.

6. Read the offer and policy pages before checkout

Confirm all of the following:

  • The final price after shipping, taxes, and fees.
  • Whether the displayed price requires buying multiple units.
  • Whether the offer creates a subscription or auto-renewing membership.
  • The country from which the item ships and the expected shipping date.
  • The product’s condition, included accessories, model, and authenticity.
  • The warranty provider and geographic limitations.
  • The return address and who pays return shipping.
  • Restocking fees, final-sale restrictions, and return deadlines.
  • Whether refunds go to the original payment method or only become store credit.
  • Whether the legal pages identify a real company.
  • Whether the email domain matches the store domain.
  • Whether the stated business location conflicts with the shipping origin or return instructions.

Copied or vague legal pages are not proof of fraud by themselves, but they are a reason to pause. A seller that will not clearly state where products ship from, where returns go, or who provides the warranty is not offering enough information for a defensible purchase decision.

7. Evaluate reviews as evidence, not proof

The FTC recommends evaluating reviews critically. Look for recent reviews across several independent platforms, reviewers with a history of other reviews, specific descriptions, and a normal mix of positive and negative experiences. Be cautious about:

  • An unnatural burst of reviews soon after the domain or store appeared.
  • Generic or copied wording, identical photographs, or reviews that describe a different product.
  • Only perfect or near-perfect ratings.
  • Negative reviews that disappear or are answered only with vague promises.
  • Reviews found only on the seller’s own website.
  • Testimonials from supposed influencers or celebrities that cannot be confirmed through their official accounts.

Fake reviews may be positive or negative and can be hard to distinguish from genuine ones. The FTC’s Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule, effective October 21, 2024, prohibits specified deceptive practices involving fake or false reviews, paid sentiment-specific reviews, undisclosed insider reviews, and purportedly independent review websites controlled by the business. The rule does not mean every review has been authenticated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Choose the payment method before you commit

For a U.S. online purchase, a credit card generally provides stronger dispute protections than a debit card, direct bank transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency, or many peer-to-peer payments. The FTC recommends paying by credit card when possible. That is protection, not permission to ignore red flags; a card issuer can require documentation and may determine that a claim does not qualify.

Walk away when an unfamiliar seller insists on:

  • Gift cards.
  • Wire transfers or direct bank transfers.
  • Cryptocurrency.
  • Payment-app transfers with no purchase protection.
  • PayPal Friends and Family for a purchase.
  • Payment outside a marketplace’s official checkout.

Scammers favor payment methods that make money difficult to recover. A PayPal button by itself is not enough. Under PayPal’s current U.S. Purchase Protection terms, eligible Goods and Services transactions may qualify, while personal Friends and Family payments are excluded. PayPal’s U.S. terms generally require an Item Not Received dispute within 180 days of payment. A Significantly Not as Described dispute generally must be opened within 30 days of delivery or fulfillment, or within 180 days of payment, whichever comes first. Eligibility, exclusions, and evidence requirements apply.

What the padlock, design, and search ranking do—and do not—prove

HTTPS and the padlock

HTTPS encrypts the connection between your browser and the website. It does not prove who operates the store, that the products are authentic, or that the seller will issue a refund. As the FTC explains, scammers can encrypt their websites too.

The padlock answers, Is this connection encrypted? It does not answer, Who operates this store, and will I receive what I ordered?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Professional design

Scammers can copy logos, product photography, policy pages, checkout templates, and brand colors. A polished site may be less informative than a verifiable business identity, consistent contact information, clear terms, and a protected payment method. The Better Business Bureau also cautions that convincing design and HTTPS do not establish legitimacy.

Search-engine results and social comments

A high search ranking does not guarantee a merchant’s performance, and social-media comments may be manipulated or attached to a fake account. A clean search result may simply mean the store is new or has not attracted complaints. No negative reviews is not the same as a positive verification result.

Domain age and safety checkers

A new domain, an old domain, privacy-protected registration, or a clean technical safety scan is only one signal. None independently proves that the current operator owns the inventory, will ship the correct item, or will process a refund.

Pressure tactics that should change your decision

Urgency is not evidence of a bargain. Be skeptical of countdown timers that reset when you refresh, claims that only two items remain without a credible inventory explanation, unverified going-out-of-business or bankruptcy-sale claims, and pop-ups saying you will permanently lose the discount if you leave.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Other warning signs include fake celebrity or influencer endorsements, claims that the business is closing today, and sellers who refuse to answer basic questions until payment is made. The FTC’s warning about fake JOANN online-sale sites illustrates how scammers can exploit a real company’s liquidation or closing-sale publicity to make an impostor website seem plausible.

Go, pause, or walk away

Decision What it looks like What to do
Go cautiously The seller is independently verifiable; the exact model and condition are clear; the discount has a visible explanation; delivery, warranty, returns, total cost, and payment protections are clear. Use a protected payment method, save the listing and terms, and do not assume the purchase is risk-free.
Pause The store is new, has little independent history, came from a social-media ad, uses stock photos or generic copy, has limited contact information, or has vague terms. The price is far below every comparable offer. Do not enter payment details. Resolve each uncertainty through independent sources or choose an established seller.
Walk away The domain impersonates a brand, identity cannot be corroborated, the seller demands an unprotected payment, authenticity cannot be confirmed, the return address is unusable, or extra charges appear after checkout. Close the page. If you already paid or shared information, begin the recovery steps below.

A new legitimate small business can have a new domain, limited reviews, or an imperfect website. Those facts justify more verification, not an automatic fraud finding. Conversely, multiple superficial positives should not override one severe red flag.

Save evidence before buying

Take screenshots or save PDFs of the advertisement, product page, advertised price, condition description, shipping promise, return policy, warranty terms, checkout total, order confirmation, tracking information, and every seller communication. Record the exact domain and the date and time. This evidence can disappear if the website changes or goes offline and may be important to a payment dispute.

If you already paid

Act now rather than waiting for a seller who sends only automated replies. Do not send additional customs, release, insurance, verification, or redelivery payments. Do not provide a one-time password, bank login, Social Security number, or identity document to someone who claims it is needed to process a refund. The FTC recommends contacting the company or financial institution used for payment and asking for the transaction to be reversed, regardless of the payment method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Credit card

  1. Call the card issuer using the number on the card or statement.
  2. Explain the applicable problem: merchandise never received, wrong item, counterfeit or materially not as described, unauthorized charge, duplicate charge, or incorrect charge.
  3. Ask how to open a dispute or chargeback and whether the issuer needs the card replaced.
  4. Submit the required written notice and supporting evidence.
  5. Include the order confirmation, screenshots, promised delivery date, tracking details, correspondence, and your refund request.
  6. Continue paying undisputed portions of the bill on time.

For a federal billing-error dispute, written notice generally must reach the issuer within 60 days after the statement showing the error was sent. The issuer generally must acknowledge the dispute within 30 days unless it has already resolved it, and additional investigation deadlines apply. See the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s credit-card guidance and the FTC’s dispute guidance.

Do not assume every quality complaint is automatically a statutory billing error. Non-delivery and goods not accepted or delivered as agreed are treated differently from some disputes about product quality. Describe the facts accurately and ask the issuer which dispute category applies.

Debit card

Contact the bank immediately and ask about an unauthorized transaction or merchandise dispute. Debit-card protections and deadlines differ from credit-card protections, and the money may already have left your account. Do not assume a debit-card claim works exactly like a credit-card chargeback. The FTC explains the difference between credit- and debit-card protections.

PayPal

Open the dispute through PayPal’s Resolution Center using the correct category: Item Not Received or Significantly Not as Described. Follow the applicable deadline in PayPal’s current terms and do not close the dispute merely because the seller promises a refund. If the transaction was funded by a card, ask the card issuer whether a separate dispute is available and follow its instructions; overlapping remedies can affect the process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PayPal protection is not automatic. Eligibility, exclusions, proof, shipping evidence, and filing deadlines apply. Friends and Family payments are generally excluded from Purchase Protection under PayPal’s current U.S. terms.

Gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps, and cryptocurrency

  • Gift card: Contact the issuer immediately, report the scam, and provide the card number and receipt.
  • Wire transfer: Contact the bank or wire-transfer company immediately, report fraud, and request a reversal.
  • Payment app: Report the transaction to the app. If it was funded by a card, contact the card issuer too.
  • Cryptocurrency: Contact the exchange or provider and request help, but understand that crypto payments are typically not reversible.

Recovery is harder with these methods, but speed matters. Use the FTC’s payment-specific recovery instructions.

If the seller sends a tracking number

A tracking number is not proof that the correct product was shipped. Distinguish among a label merely created, a package accepted by the carrier, a package in transit, delivery to your address, and receipt of the correct contents. A seller may provide tracking for an empty package, a different shipment, or a package delivered elsewhere. Preserve the tracking record and photograph the packaging and contents if something arrives.

If the seller says the package is held at customs

Do not automatically pay a new fee. A demand for tariffs, customs, insurance, discreet shipping, release, or redelivery money after the original purchase is a known escalation pattern. The BBB describes tariff-delay scams in which sellers use customs explanations to postpone refund requests and avoid acknowledging non-delivery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the order becomes out of stock

Out-of-stock status is not automatically fraud, but the seller must address the refund. Ask for a refund to the original payment method and document the request. The BBB describes out-of-stock scams in which the product never existed and the seller hopes the buyer will not notice that the promised refund never arrives.

U.S. shipping and refund rights

For covered U.S. merchandise orders, the FTC’s Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule generally requires a seller to have a reasonable basis to ship within the advertised time. If no shipping period is stated, the default is generally 30 days. If the seller cannot meet the deadline, it must notify the buyer, provide the required delay option, and allow cancellation with a prompt refund.

The seller cannot simply substitute store credit for the required refund when the buyer cancels an unshipped order under the rule. However, this is U.S. federal guidance for covered merchandise orders. Other countries may have different rules, and a legal right to a refund does not guarantee quick recovery if a fraudulent seller has disappeared.

If you entered personal information

  • Card number: Contact the issuer, replace the card if advised, and monitor transactions.
  • Bank-account details: Contact the bank, ask about account protection or replacement, and monitor withdrawals.
  • Reused password: Change it everywhere it was reused and enable multifactor authentication.
  • Social Security number: Use IdentityTheft.gov for recovery steps.
  • Sensitive identity information: Consider a credit freeze or fraud alert with the credit bureaus.

Never give a refund caller your one-time authentication code or bank login. Someone who already has your order information may use it to make a second, fake recovery attempt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where to report the store, ad, or fraud

Reporting usually does not itself produce a refund. Your payment provider is generally the immediate recovery channel, while reports help agencies and platforms identify patterns and stop repeat activity.

USAGov recommends trying the seller first when appropriate, then contacting the relevant state or federal consumer-protection authority. The FBI says to file an IC3 complaint even if you are unsure whether it qualifies. IC3 will not contact victims to demand money or offer paid recovery services.

Bottom line: low price is a warning, not a verdict

A price that looks too good to be true is not automatically a scam. It becomes a reason to walk away when the seller cannot provide a credible, independently verifiable explanation and protected path to purchase. Compare the exact item and total delivered cost, verify the business and domain outside the site, inspect condition and return terms, confirm branded-product authorization, and use a payment method with meaningful dispute protections.

You do not need courtroom-level proof to decline a risky purchase. If the evidence leaves you with an unexplained discount, an unknown seller, weak payment protection, and pressure to act, keeping your money is the safer bargain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 70% discount automatically a scam?

No. There is no universal discount percentage that proves fraud. A 70% discount may reflect clearance, liquidation, an open-box item, refurbished merchandise, a discontinued model, missing accessories, or a foreign-market version. It is much riskier when the product is advertised as new and authentic, the price is far below comparable total delivered prices, and the seller cannot explain the difference.

Is a padlock enough to prove an online store is safe?

No. HTTPS encrypts the connection, but it does not verify the seller’s identity, inventory, product authenticity, shipping performance, or refund policy. Scammers can use HTTPS too.

Are new websites always scams?

No. A legitimate small business may have a new domain and few reviews. Newness is a reason to perform more independent checks, not proof of fraud. An old domain is not proof of safety either because ownership can change and sites can be compromised.

What if the seller has excellent reviews?

Reviews are evidence, not a guarantee. Check whether they appear across independent platforms, are specific and recent, come from reviewers with a history of reviews, and include a normal mix of experiences. Generic, copied, unusually concentrated, or seller-only reviews deserve less weight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is PayPal safer than a credit card?

Either may offer protection, but neither guarantees a refund. Eligible PayPal Goods and Services transactions may qualify for Purchase Protection; Friends and Family payments are generally excluded under PayPal’s current U.S. terms. Credit-card disputes also have eligibility rules and deadlines. Choose the protected method that applies to your transaction and keep your evidence.

What if the seller sends a tracking number?

Tracking does not prove that the correct product was shipped or delivered to you. Check whether the carrier accepted the package, whether it was delivered to your address, and whether the contents match the order. Save the tracking history and photograph the package and contents.

What if the seller says my order is held at customs?

Do not automatically send more money. Contact the carrier or customs authority through independently obtained contact information, not a link or phone number supplied by the seller. Additional tariff, insurance, release, discreet-shipping, or redelivery demands are common escalation signs.

Can I get my money back if I used a debit card?

Possibly, but debit-card protections and deadlines differ from credit-card protections. Contact your bank immediately, explain whether the transaction was unauthorized or the merchandise was not delivered as agreed, and ask about its dispute process. Do not wait for the seller if a deadline is approaching.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the item arrives but is counterfeit?

Document the listing, packaging, serial numbers, product differences, and communications. Ask the payment provider about a counterfeit or materially-not-as-described dispute. Eligibility varies; receiving a package does not necessarily mean the seller fulfilled the order correctly.

What if I only visited the website and did not buy anything?

If you did not enter information or download anything, the immediate financial risk is usually lower. Close the page, do not return through the ad, and report it to the platform or relevant authority. If you entered a password, change it anywhere reused and enable multifactor authentication; if you entered financial or identity information, contact the relevant institution promptly.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: A very low price is a risk signal, not proof of a scam. Buy only when the seller, exact product, condition, total cost, delivery promise, return terms, and payment protections can all be independently verified. If the discount is unexplained or the seller demands an irreversible payment, walk away.
