The Best Luggage Brands of 2026, Tested and Reviewed

Samsonite is the best overall luggage brand in 2026, but Travelpro, Briggs & Riley, Away, TUMI, Monos, and budget brands win for different travel needs. Here is how to choose.

There is no single best luggage brand for every traveler. Based on published laboratory testing, long-term use, and real-world travel reports available as of August 9, 2026, Samsonite is the best overall choice, Travelpro is best for frequent flyers, and Briggs & Riley is the strongest pick for durability and repair support. Away leads for compression, TUMI for luxury business travel, Monos for minimalist design, and American Tourister or Amazon Basics for occasional travelers on a tight budget.

The right answer depends on how often you travel, whether you check bags, which airlines you use, how much organization you need, and whether a warranty covers the kind of damage your luggage is likely to experience. A brand may make an excellent carry-on but an overly heavy checked bag, or offer a generous repair promise while selling a suitcase that is too large for international cabin limits.

The Best Luggage Brands of 2026, Tested and Reviewed

Best luggage brands at a glance

Best for Brand Why it stands out Main qualification
Best overall Samsonite The broadest range of dependable hard- and softside luggage at many price levels Quality and warranty terms vary significantly by collection
Frequent flyers Travelpro Flight-Crew-oriented designs, strong organization, smooth wheels, and useful repair coverage Some models are heavy and styling is utilitarian
Durability and repair support Briggs & Riley Robust construction, excellent wheels and handles, and a broad damage-repair promise Expensive, and some carry-ons are heavy
International travel Briggs & Riley Durable, space-efficient international-size options with strong service support No carry-on fits every international airline; measure the specific model
Compression Away Effective compression panels and a clean, organized interior Polycarbonate shells scuff, and warranty terms changed in April 2026
Wheels and design July Exceptionally smooth rolling and many handle-height settings Cosmetic scratches and scuffs are common; coverage is limited
Features BÉIS Weight indicator, laundry and shoe bags, removable organizers, and padded handles Some designs are bulky and hardside shells can scuff
Organization CALPAK Especially useful pockets and compartments in underseat and softside luggage Shorter, less generous warranty than premium rivals
Luxury business travel TUMI Premium materials, business-focused organization, and a strong service network Very expensive, with a five-year rather than lifetime warranty
Minimalist hardside design Monos Clean styling, smooth wheels, spacious interiors, and a 100-day return period Standard lifetime coverage excludes many travel-caused failures
Spacious traditional luggage Delsey Paris Large capacity, classic designs, and accessible pricing Published testing indicates lower durability than the best premium brands
Budget luggage American Tourister or Amazon Basics Low prices and acceptable maneuverability for occasional use Less durable handles, wheels, and finishes
Rolling duffel or long trips L.L.Bean Flexible, spacious, durable duffels that fold for storage Easy to overfill, and rolling duffels can be cumbersome in airports
Aluminum luxury Rimowa Distinctive aluminum construction and a lifetime functional guarantee on qualifying purchases Heavy, expensive, and more likely to dent than crack

These are brand-level recommendations, not a guarantee that every suitcase in a brand’s catalog performs equally well. Samsonite, Travelpro, Delsey, TUMI, and July, in particular, sell collections with materially different materials, weights, features, and warranties.

How these luggage brands were evaluated

This is a synthesis of published testing and real-world reporting rather than a claim of original testing by The Finance Base. The strongest available evidence comes from Travel + Leisure, which reports testing more than 800 luggage pieces across carry-ons, checked bags, trunks, duffels, backpacks, underseaters, garment bags, and weekenders. Its process includes design inspection, packing, maneuverability over pavers and around obstacles, baseball-bat impact testing, tabletop push-over tests, and additional use by frequent travelers for six months or longer.

#1 Best Overall
Amazon Basics 30" Hardside Large Checked Luggage, Hardshell Suitcase With Four Multi-directional Wheels, Expandable For Up to 15% More Space, Scratch-Resistant Shell, Black
  • SPACIOUS DESIGN: Large size best for 2-3 week trips or vacations; measures 20.7 x 12.6 x 30.7 inches, including wheels
  • DURABLE AND RELIABLE: Extra-thick hard shell with scratch-resistant finish guards against impact and rough handling
  • EXPANDABLE: Increase packing space up to 15% for added flexibility and organization
  • ORGANIZED INTERIOR: Keep essentials organized with an interior divider and three zippered pockets
  • EFFORTLESS TRAVEL: Navigate with ease thanks to four multi-directional wheels, telescoping handle, and short lift handle

Good Housekeeping provides the most explicit laboratory methodology. It weighs bags, checks exterior dimensions against common airline limits, tests packing capacity with a standard load, performs repeated three-foot drop tests, and evaluates scratches, abrasion, water resistance, features, wheels, handles, and maneuverability with consumer testers.

Condé Nast Traveller adds broader international and luxury coverage based on hands-on use during flights, train journeys, weekend trips, and baggage-carousel handling. Its field includes brands such as Rimowa, Antler, Nortvi, Harper Collective, Lipault, Nere, Bellroy, Horizn Studios, Carl Friedrik, July, Monos, Aer, BÉIS, Briggs & Riley, Steamline, Montblanc, Louis Vuitton, TUMI, Bric’s, American Tourister, Victorinox, and Samsonite.

To interpret those results, the practical priorities are durability and functional reliability at 25%, maneuverability at 15%, packing efficiency at 15%, weight and airline compatibility at 15%, warranty and repairability at 15%, value at 10%, and design and usability at 5%. The weights are a decision framework, not a claim that every brand was tested under one identical controlled protocol, so the recommendations below are organized by use case instead of forced into one universal numerical ranking.

1. Samsonite: best overall

Best for: Travelers who want one broadly available brand for carry-ons, checked bags, underseat luggage, and softside or hardside styles.

Samsonite is the safest all-purpose recommendation because its catalog covers more travel situations and price levels than almost any competitor. Both Travel + Leisure and Good Housekeeping place it at or near the top overall. Testing found a consistent balance of capacity, weight, maneuverability, and availability across selected hard- and softside pieces.

The Freeform Hardside Expandable Carry-On is a standout in Travel + Leisure’s testing. The C-Lite line deserves separate consideration for shoppers seeking a lighter, more premium option. The important point is that these results should not be generalized to every Samsonite suitcase: entry-level collections, lightweight collections, and premium collections can differ substantially in shell material, wheel quality, interior capacity, and warranty.

Samsonite is especially attractive when a household wants matching luggage in several sizes without moving to luxury pricing. It is also a practical choice for occasional travelers who want a recognizable service and retail network.

Warranty and drawbacks: Samsonite’s warranty generally addresses manufacturing defects, not damage caused by airlines or transportation. The company specifically says that cracked or dented luggage is not considered a manufacturing defect in its warranty FAQ. Check the warranty for the exact collection before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy it if: You want a balanced, widely available suitcase and are willing to compare individual collections.

Skip it if: Your top priority is an unconditional damage-repair promise or a narrowly defined international cabin size.

2. Travelpro: best for frequent flyers

Best for: Business travelers, flight crews, and people who travel frequently and value softside organization and maneuverability over fashion-forward styling.

Travelpro’s designs reflect the needs of people who move through airports repeatedly. Its strengths include comfortable handles, smooth wheels, practical external pockets, and useful organization for documents, electronics, and clothing. Good Housekeeping names it best for frequent flyers, while Travel + Leisure ranks it runner-up overall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the Platinum Elite Softside, Platinum Elite Hardside, Maxlite, Crew, and VersaPack+ collections rather than assuming they are interchangeable. Softside Platinum Elite and Crew models are particularly appealing when quick access to a laptop or passport matters. Hardside versions may provide greater protection for fragile contents but can trade away external-pocket convenience.

Warranty and repair support: Travelpro’s protection depends on the collection and seller. Its current warranty information says the Built for a Lifetime warranty covers functional defects involving wheels, zippers, extension handles, and carrying handles. The Trusted Companion Promise may cover airline or common-carrier damage for a limited period after registration. Other collections have five-year, ten-year, or one-year warranties. Do not assume that every Travelpro bag has the same lifetime airline-damage protection.

Drawbacks: Some models are heavier than their appearance suggests, and the professional styling is more utilitarian than minimalist brands. A two-wheel model may be less nimble in a crowded terminal, although some travelers prefer its curb clearance and simpler wheel design.

Buy it if: You fly often, need reliable access to organized compartments, or prefer a softside bag.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skip it if: You want the lightest possible hardside case or a fashion-led design.

3. Briggs & Riley: best durability and repair support

Best for: Frequent travelers who would rather pay more for repairability and long-term ownership than replace inexpensive luggage repeatedly.

Briggs & Riley has the strongest durability-and-service proposition in this group. Travel + Leisure reports multi-year use, robust wheels, strong maneuverability, and durable construction. Good Housekeeping also highlights its drop-test performance and compression system.

The brand’s signature CX expansion system increases capacity and then compresses the contents back into the case. The softside Baseline line is a strong choice for organization and flexible packing, while the Sympatico line offers a polycarbonate hardside alternative.

Briggs & Riley’s Simple as That guarantee is unusually broad: the brand says it repairs damaged bags, including airline damage, without requiring proof of purchase. That is materially different from a lifetime warranty limited to manufacturing defects.

Rank #2
Amazon Basics 30" Hardside Large Checked Luggage with Multi-directional Wheels, Expandable for Up to 15% More Space, Scratch-Resistant Hardshell, Navy Blue
  • SPACIOUS DESIGN: Best for 2-3 week trips or vacations; measures 20.7 x 12.6 x 30.7 inches, including wheels

Important limitations: The high purchase price only makes financial sense for travelers who use the bag enough to benefit from its construction and repair support. Some carry-ons are heavy, and expanding a bag can push it beyond airline size or weight limits. Cosmetic scuffs and dents are not the same as functional failure, even when functional repairs are covered.

Buy it if: You check luggage often, travel internationally, or want a repair-first ownership model.

Skip it if: You travel only once or twice a year, prioritize low empty weight, or would not use a premium bag enough to justify the price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Away: best compression

Best for: Travelers who want a polished hardside suitcase with an effective compression system and a highly structured interior.

Away’s interior layout is its main advantage: dual compartments, a compression panel, and a laundry bag make it easier to organize clothing and control bulky packing. Travel + Leisure names Away best for compression, and Good Housekeeping names it best carry-on after drop and scratch testing.

Standard Away polycarbonate cases offer a clean look but can show scratches quickly. The Bigger Carry-On and expandable options need special attention: extra capacity is useful, but the fully expanded exterior may not fit international cabin limits. Aluminum versions use latches rather than zippers and offer a more rigid shell, but they are heavier and can dent.

The warranty changed on April 14, 2026. Under Away’s current LifetimeCare policy, suitcases purchased on or after that date receive lifetime repair support. Functional damage from manufacturing defects or unexpected rough travel is complimentary during the first five years; after five years, repairs remain available for a service fee. Purchases made before April 14, 2026 follow the previous limited lifetime warranty. That means older articles describing one universal, unlimited lifetime airline-damage warranty are no longer accurate for every purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy it if: Compression, interior neatness, and modern hardside design matter more than a pristine exterior.

Skip it if: You need a very light case, dislike visible scuffs, or routinely fly airlines with unusually strict cabin dimensions.

5. July: best design and smoothest wheels

Best for: Design-conscious travelers who want colorful luggage, personalization, smooth wheels, and a highly adjustable handle.

July performs particularly well for maneuverability. Good Housekeeping reports smooth wheels and a comfortable handle with 20 height settings. Travel + Leisure highlights the brand’s colors, personalization options, and CaseSafe tracking-equipped luggage on select models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The design features are useful, but they should not overshadow the operating details. The battery and accessories in the Carry-On Pro may need to be removed if the bag is gate-checked. The FAA requires batteries in smart luggage to be removable in many checked-bag situations, so confirm that you can remove the battery before flying.

Warranty: July’s limited lifetime luggage warranty covers specified manufacturing faults involving wheels, zippers, handles, compression straps, and certain shell or bumper breaks. It excludes cosmetic scuffs, dents, scratches, and ordinary wear. The ejectable power bank has a two-year warranty, while travel bags generally have five-year coverage; some collections have shorter terms. The product-specific terms control.

Buy it if: Smooth rolling and appearance are high priorities.

Skip it if: You want a warranty that treats airline dents and cosmetic damage as covered failures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. BÉIS: best features

Best for: Travelers who value built-in organization, packing accessories, and visual design.

BÉIS includes practical extras that many competitors sell separately: built-in weight indicators, padded handles, retractable bag straps, removable laundry and shoe bags, and coordinated hardware. Good Housekeeping reports strong scores for appearance, spaciousness, and organization.

The trade-off is bulk. Travel + Leisure found that some BÉIS duffels are too large to work as personal items, even if their styling makes them look suitable for under-seat use. Hardside cases can also scuff, and the extra organizers add weight and occupy some usable space.

Warranty: BÉIS’s limited lifetime luggage warranty covers specified functional problems such as shell cracks, broken wheels, unusable handles, broken zippers, and qualifying fabric tears. It excludes airline transport damage, cosmetic damage, ordinary wear, and some unusual or commercial uses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy it if: A built-in scale and dedicated compartments will prevent packing mistakes.

Skip it if: You need the smallest possible personal item or the strongest airline-damage coverage.

7. CALPAK: best organization and fashionable midrange luggage

Best for: Travelers who want attractive luggage with many pockets, useful underseat designs, and easy-to-access softside storage.

CALPAK’s advantage is organization rather than maximum ruggedness. Its underseat and softside models are particularly practical for travelers who want separate spaces for electronics, toiletries, shoes, and documents. Good Housekeeping names CALPAK its most fashionable brand, while Travel + Leisure names it best for organization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes CALPAK a good fit for short trips, organized commuters, and shoppers who dislike a single undivided packing compartment. It is a less compelling choice for travelers who routinely subject checked luggage to rough handling and want premium repair support.

Warranty: CALPAK products have one-, two-, or ten-year limited warranties depending on the item. The product guarantee covers manufacturing defects but excludes airline damage, ordinary wear, and accidental damage. Warranty service requires proof of purchase and a luggage servicing fee currently listed at $24.95. Verify the fee and terms before purchase because service policies can change.

Buy it if: Interior organization and appearance matter more than maximum service life.

Skip it if: You need a repair promise that covers airline mishandling or want a single lifetime policy across the entire catalog.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. TUMI: best luxury and business travel

Best for: Business travelers who value premium materials, professional styling, laptop and garment organization, and access to a strong service network.

TUMI’s appeal is not simply its price or logo. Its luggage is designed around business travel, with organized compartments, ballistic nylon options, the Omega zipper system, and specialized garment-bag layouts. Travel + Leisure also highlights the 19 Degree aluminum and Lite lines.

It remains a luxury purchase, however. A high price does not make a case immune to dents, scratches, or transit mishandling, and it does not create lifetime coverage.

Warranty: Wheeled luggage and body-worn bags receive a five-year limited warranty under TUMI’s warranty terms. The first year is worry-free and includes functional or structural damage from airline or transit mishandling. During years two through five, transit mishandling is excluded. Cosmetic damage is excluded throughout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy it if: You carry business clothing, electronics, or documents and place a premium on professional organization and service.

Skip it if: You want maximum value, low weight, or lifetime airline-damage coverage.

9. Monos: best minimalist hardside design

Best for: Travelers who want clean styling, a simple interior, smooth wheels, and a generous trial period.

Good Housekeeping identifies Monos as best minimalist design and reports strong maneuverability, smooth wheels, and spacious interiors. Its 100-day return policy reduces the risk of discovering at home that the handle height, interior layout, or wheel width does not work for you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Monos’s standard lifetime warranty is narrower than the name might suggest. It covers core functional components such as wheels, handles, locks, and zippers when they fail through normal use. It excludes airline damage, impact cracks, dents, zipper damage caused by travel mishandling, cosmetic scuffs, interior wear, and lost luggage. Optional paid coverage can add airline-damage and lost-luggage benefits; review the FAQ before relying on it.

Buy it if: You want understated hardside luggage and care about the ability to return it after extended at-home evaluation.

Skip it if: You expect a lifetime warranty to cover impact cracks, dents, or airline handling.

10. Delsey Paris: best spacious traditional luggage

Samsonite Freeform Large Checked Luggage with Dual 360° Spinner Wheels - TSA Lock, Airline-Approved - Lightweight Durable Polypropylene Expandable Hardshell - Black
  • Durable & Stylish: This large checked spinner luggage features a scratch-resistant Polypropylene hardshell, measuring 29.8" x 20.5" x 13".
  • Spacious & Organized: The 27" x 19.8" x 13" interior offers generous packing capacity, complete with elastic straps, a divider, and a pouch to keep your belongings secure and neatly arranged.
  • Smooth & Effortless Mobility: Equipped with four oversized, multidirectional spinner wheels, this lightweight 9.6 lb suitcase glides seamlessly in any direction for hassle-free travel.
  • Secure & TSA-Approved: The built-in TSA combination lock provides keyless security, ensuring your belongings stay protected throughout your journey.
  • Designed for Durability: Rigorously tested and backed by a 10-year limited warranty, this hard-shell suitcase is built to withstand the demands of travel, offering long-lasting reliability.

Delsey offers both hardside and softside luggage across a wide range of sizes. Travel + Leisure highlights the capacity of large models, including a Dune Large Expandable Spinner listed at 132 liters. Good Housekeeping describes the brand as classic and relatively affordable, while its timeless styling makes it appealing to shoppers who do not want a trend-driven case.

Capacity needs to be viewed alongside airline limits. A large expandable checked bag can become difficult to lift and may exceed the 62-linear-inch limit when expanded. A fully packed 132-liter case can also become overweight even when its dimensions are accepted.

Warranty: Depending on the product, Delsey offers two-, five-, ten-year, or lifetime limited warranties against material and workmanship defects. The individual product documentation determines the applicable term and exclusions.

Buy it if: You want traditional design and more packing space at a midrange price.

Skip it if: You prioritize the best available impact durability or routinely need to lift a fully packed large case.

11. American Tourister and Amazon Basics: best budget luggage

Best for: Occasional vacations, students, children, temporary luggage, and travelers who prefer a low upfront cost.

American Tourister is Good Housekeeping’s best-value brand, while Amazon Basics is its best option under $100. Testing found Amazon Basics luggage easy to pack and maneuver, but more prone to visible scratches and less sturdy telescopic handles. American Tourister offers broad variety and family-friendly pricing.

These bags can be rational purchases when they are used only a few times each year. They are less attractive for weekly flyers, frequent checkers, or anyone whose lost vacation time would cost more than the price difference between budget and premium luggage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a budget bag, prioritize a sturdy telescopic handle, wheels that do not bind, a practical return policy, and a warranty you have actually read. USB ports, decorative panels, and included accessories should come after those basics. Confirm the policy for the exact model and retailer rather than assuming every product in a brand’s range has identical coverage.

Buy it if: Low purchase price matters more than long-term repairability.

Skip it if: You check bags frequently or need a suitcase to withstand years of intensive travel.

12. L.L.Bean: best rolling duffel and long-trip flexibility

Best for: Road trips, family travel, outdoor gear, and long journeys where flexible capacity is more useful than compact airport maneuverability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

L.L.Bean’s duffels are spacious, durable, and fold down for storage. Their flexible sides make them useful for bulky clothing and equipment that does not fit neatly into a rigid suitcase.

The same flexibility creates the main risk: a duffel is easy to overfill beyond airline weight limits. Rolling versions can also be cumbersome through crowded airports, and their broad, soft shape may be less comfortable to lift onto a luggage belt or into a car trunk.

Buy it if: You need maximum flexible capacity or travel by car as often as you fly.

Skip it if: You want an easy-to-steer carry-on for tight airport aisles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

13. Rimowa: best aluminum luxury splurge

Best for: Travelers who specifically want aluminum construction, luxury design, and a case that develops a visible travel patina.

Rimowa is a prestige alternative rather than the practical value winner. Aluminum can resist cracking better than many plastic shells but is more likely to dent. It is also heavier, which leaves less of an airline’s weight allowance for contents. Forbes identifies the Rimowa Original Cabin as an ultra-durable aluminum option while emphasizing that crack resistance does not mean dent resistance.

Rimowa’s lifetime guarantee applies to new suitcases purchased from July 25, 2022, and covers functional aspects for the life of the suitcase. Cosmetic wear, misuse, and abuse are excluded.

Buy it if: Aluminum construction, luxury design, and repair support justify the cost for you.

Best international carry-on: start with the airline, not the brand

Briggs & Riley is the strongest brand starting point for international travel because of its construction, repair support, and availability of international-size carry-ons. But international travel is not one standardized category. Limits vary by airline, aircraft, route, fare, and regional carrier.

For U.S. context, American Airlines and Delta specify a maximum carry-on size of 22 × 14 × 9 inches, while Southwest allows 24 × 16 × 10 inches. These measurements include wheels and handles. American Airlines lists a personal-item limit of 18 × 14 × 8 inches. Check the current rules for your operating carrier at American Airlines, Delta, or Southwest.

For a lower-risk international purchase, look for a bag whose full exterior dimensions remain around 21.7 × 14 × 9 inches or within the exact published limit of the airline you use most. A suitcase marketed as 21 inches may measure its body only, excluding wheels, handles, and attachments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measure expandable luggage both closed and expanded. A bag that fits when compressed can exceed cabin depth when expanded. Also check the width beside your body: an overly wide spinner may technically fit overhead but be awkward to roll down a narrow aisle.

Hardside versus softside luggage

Choose hardside when you value Choose softside when you value
Protection for fragile contents Exterior access to passports, laptops, and documents
A structured interior and easy-to-wipe surface Flexible panels that fit into tighter spaces
Better resistance to ordinary splashes Lower weight in some comparable designs
Less exposed fabric and fewer external pockets Business-travel organization and quick access

Neither construction is automatically more durable. Hardside performance depends on the shell material, wheel attachment, handle design, zipper or latch quality, and frame. Polycarbonate can flex better than brittle ABS, while aluminum resists cracking but can dent and weigh more. Polypropylene is another plastic-shell option with different weight and flexibility trade-offs.

Hardside cases can waste interior space around wheel wells and handle rails, require more floor space to open, and show scuffs prominently. Softside cases protect fragile contents less effectively, can absorb dirt and moisture, and may become overweight because their flexible panels encourage overpacking. Two-wheel softside bags can be less maneuverable in crowds but may offer better curb clearance and fewer exposed spinner wheels.

Warranty comparison: the word lifetime is not enough

Warranty coverage is one of the biggest differences between luggage brands. A warranty may cover only manufacturing defects, or it may cover functional failures during normal use. A much smaller number of policies address airline damage. Cosmetic scratches and dents are commonly excluded even when broken wheels or handles are covered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Brand What the policy generally covers Important exclusions or conditions
Samsonite Manufacturing defects under the applicable collection warranty Cracked or dented luggage is generally not treated as a manufacturing defect; airline damage is generally excluded
Travelpro Collection-specific coverage; Built for a Lifetime covers specified functional components, and Trusted Companion may cover limited airline damage Terms vary by collection and registration; not every bag has the same lifetime airline-damage protection
Briggs & Riley Repairs damage, including airline damage, under the Simple as That guarantee Cosmetic wear is different from functional damage; premium prices and heavier models remain trade-offs
Away For purchases on or after April 14, 2026, LifetimeCare offers lifetime repair support; complimentary qualifying functional repairs for the first five years After five years, repairs may carry a service fee; older purchases follow prior terms; cosmetic damage is not the same as functional damage
July Specified manufacturing faults involving wheels, zippers, handles, compression straps, and certain shell or bumper breaks Scuffs, dents, scratches, and ordinary wear excluded; power bank has a two-year warranty and travel bags generally five years
BÉIS Specified functional failures including qualifying shell cracks, broken wheels, handles, zippers, and fabric tears Airline damage, cosmetic damage, ordinary wear, and some unusual or commercial uses excluded
CALPAK Manufacturing defects for one, two, or ten years depending on the product Airline damage, ordinary wear, and accidental damage excluded; proof of purchase and a listed $24.95 servicing fee may apply
TUMI Five-year limited warranty; first year includes functional or structural airline and transit damage Transit mishandling excluded during years two through five; cosmetic damage excluded throughout
Monos Core functional components such as wheels, handles, locks, and zippers when they fail through normal use Standard policy excludes airline damage, impact cracks, dents, travel-mishandled zipper damage, cosmetic scuffs, and lost luggage; optional paid coverage may broaden protection
Delsey Paris Material and workmanship defects under a product-specific two-, five-, ten-year, or lifetime limited warranty Confirm the exact term and exclusions in the individual product documentation
Rimowa Functional aspects for the life of qualifying new suitcases purchased from July 25, 2022 Cosmetic wear, misuse, and abuse excluded

Before buying, check whether repairs require proof of purchase, whether the warranty applies only to the original owner, whether it is transferable, who pays shipping, whether a service fee applies, and whether the company repairs or replaces the bag. A repair promise is only as useful as the parts, service locations, and logistics behind it.

Airline limits that can make a good suitcase a bad purchase

Carry-on dimensions include wheels and handles

Do not compare only the advertised case-body height. Measure the complete exterior, including wheels, handles, side attachments, and any front pocket. A large front-pocket hardside may provide laptop access but add depth and reduce interior volume. An expander should be measured in both settings.

Checked-bag limits include size and weight

Delta’s standard checked-bag limit is generally 62 linear inches and 50 pounds, although route, fare, status, and airline-specific rules can change the allowance. See Delta’s baggage overview for current rules. Large luggage should be checked on a scale and measured before leaving home, especially when using a flexible duffel or an expandable case.

Expansion can create new problems

Expansion adds useful capacity but can make a carry-on oversized, push a checked bag beyond 62 linear inches, make the case unstable, increase the likelihood of overweight baggage, and stress zippers or expansion panels. Treat the expanded setting as a separate size category.

Smart luggage, batteries, and TSA locks

The FAA says luggage equipped with lithium batteries generally must be carried on unless the battery is removed. A smart bag may be checked only when its battery is removed or when it falls within narrow checked-baggage limits. Spare lithium batteries and power banks must remain in carry-on baggage. If your carry-on is gate-checked, remove the battery or power bank and keep it in the cabin. Review the FAA smart-bag rules, spare-battery guidance, and gate-check instructions before flying.

A TSA-recognized lock allows security officers to open a bag with authorized tools, but it is not a guarantee against theft or damage. TSA may still cut a lock if necessary and does not assume liability for damage caused when a locked bag must be opened. The TSA lock guidance explains the distinction.

A practical pre-purchase checklist

  • Measure the full bag: Include wheels, handles, attachments, and the expanded setting.
  • Check the operating airline: A bag that fits American Airlines or Delta may not fit a regional or international carrier.
  • Compare empty weight: Heavy aluminum or feature-rich bags leave less allowance for clothing.
  • Test the handle: Look for enough height settings, minimal wobble, and comfortable clearance beside your legs.
  • Test wheels beyond a showroom floor: Smooth polished floors do not reveal performance on pavement, carpet, or pavers.
  • Inspect wheel width and stability: A case can roll smoothly but still feel unstable or too wide in a narrow aisle.
  • Open the packed interior: Compression panels and zippers that feel smooth when empty may bind when fully loaded.
  • Separate cosmetic from functional durability: A scuffed shell may remain usable, while a failed wheel or handle is a genuine service problem.
  • Read the exact warranty: Look for airline damage, impact cracks, cosmetic wear, shipping, service fees, proof of purchase, and original-owner rules.
  • Check retailer-specific terms: Retailer-exclusive models may have different warranty coverage from direct-purchase models.
  • Consider expected use: A budget bag can be good value for two annual trips but poor value for weekly checked travel.
  • Do not trust a built-in scale blindly: Verify the reading against an independent luggage scale and check how long the scale is covered.
  • Identify flexible-bag risks: Duffels are easy to overfill and may be awkward to lift onto a car, hotel scale, or baggage belt.
  • Choose colors strategically: Bright colors are easier to identify on a carousel but can show scuffs more clearly.
  • Confirm battery removal: For smart luggage, practice removing the battery before the first flight.
  • Do not overinterpret liters: Advertised interior volume is not always directly comparable because brands measure differently and wheel housings or rails consume space.

Which luggage brand should you buy?

  • Fly weekly or check bags often: Start with Travelpro for softside organization or Briggs & Riley for maximum repair support.
  • Want one dependable brand for the household: Choose Samsonite, but compare collections rather than buying solely by logo.
  • Need compression and polished hardside design: Choose Away, while checking the revised warranty and international dimensions.
  • Want the smoothest wheels and a design-led case: Consider July, accepting cosmetic wear exclusions.
  • Want the most built-in features: Choose BÉIS for accessories such as weight indicators and removable organizers.
  • Want the most compartmentalized midrange luggage: Choose CALPAK, particularly for underseat and softside organization.
  • Want minimalist hardside styling: Consider Monos, but do not treat its standard lifetime policy as airline-damage coverage.
  • Need business organization and luxury service: Choose TUMI if the five-year warranty and price are acceptable.
  • Need a spacious traditional suitcase: Consider Delsey Paris, measuring large and expandable models carefully.
  • Travel occasionally on a tight budget: Choose American Tourister or Amazon Basics and prioritize handles, wheels, return terms, and basic durability.
  • Need a flexible long-trip or road-trip bag: Choose L.L.Bean, but weigh it before reaching the airport.
  • Want aluminum prestige: Choose Rimowa if you accept dents, weight, and a luxury price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a lifetime luggage warranty cover airline damage?

Not necessarily. Briggs & Riley says its Simple as That guarantee repairs damage including airline damage, but Monos excludes airline damage and impact cracks under its standard lifetime warranty. Away’s coverage depends on the purchase date, TUMI covers transit mishandling during its first year only, and BÉIS excludes airline transport damage. Always read the policy for the exact collection and purchase date.

What is the safest carry-on size for international travel?

There is no universal international size. Measure the complete exterior, including wheels and handles, against the operating airline’s published limit. A case around 21.7 × 14 × 9 inches is a lower-risk target, but regional airlines and specific aircraft may impose smaller limits.

Are smart bags allowed on airplanes?

They may be, but lithium-battery rules apply. The battery generally must be removable when the bag is checked, and spare batteries or power banks must stay in the cabin. If a carry-on is gate-checked, remove the battery or power bank before handing over the bag.

Is hardside or softside luggage more durable?

Neither construction type is always more durable. Hardside luggage protects contents and resists ordinary moisture, while softside luggage can be lighter, flexible, and easier to organize. Wheel attachments, handles, zippers or latches, shell or fabric quality, and how the bag is used matter more than the category alone.

The Bottom Line

Samsonite is the best overall luggage brand for most shoppers in 2026, but frequent flyers should look first at Travelpro, heavy users who value repairs should consider Briggs & Riley, and occasional travelers can save money with American Tourister or Amazon Basics. Away, July, BÉIS, CALPAK, TUMI, Monos, Delsey, L.L.Bean, and Rimowa each make more sense when a specific priority—compression, wheels, organization, luxury, flexible capacity, or aluminum construction—matters more than a generic overall ranking. Before purchasing, verify the exact model’s full dimensions, empty weight, collection-specific warranty, and current airline rules.
