There is no single best auto lender, but PenFed currently shows the lowest advertised rate found in this comparison: 3.39% APR for 36 months on a new vehicle and 4.34% APR for 36 months on a used vehicle when the purchase uses PenFed’s Car Buying Service. Those are advertised floors, not guaranteed offers, and the discount requires using the buying service.
For a realistic benchmark, borrowers with superprime credit received average APRs of 4.55% on new-car loans and 6.30% on used-car loans in Experian’s Q1 2026 data. The overall averages were 6.39% for new vehicles and 11.43% for used vehicles. Compare at least one credit union, one bank or online lender, and dealer or manufacturer financing using the same loan amount and term.
Rates in this article were checked or reported between June 11 and August 9, 2026. Auto rates, eligibility rules, discounts, and vehicle restrictions can change, so confirm the lender’s live offer before applying.
Best auto loan lenders at a glance
The right lender depends on more than the lowest number on a rate page. A lender’s advertised APR may require excellent credit, a particular loan term, a new vehicle, a minimum loan amount, automatic payments, membership, or use of a lender-specific car-buying service. Vehicle age, mileage, loan-to-value ratio, state, income, and debt-to-income ratio can also change the final offer.

Which lender is best for your situation?
- Lowest advertised new-car rate: Check PenFed first if you are willing to use its Car Buying Service and meet its approval and vehicle requirements. Its published 3.39% APR is for 36 months; its 60-month floor was 3.84%.
- Lowest advertised used-car rate found: PenFed’s Car Buying Service showed 4.34% for 36 months and 4.99% for 60 months. Navy Federal is also highly competitive, with used-car rates as low as 4.79% for 12–36 months, but membership is restricted.
- Military, veteran, Department of Defense, or eligible family borrower: Start with Navy Federal, then compare its offer with PenFed, a local credit union, and any manufacturer promotion.
- Large-bank customer: Bank of America is worth checking if you value a 30-day rate lock or qualify for its 0.10–0.50-point Rewards discount. Chase is another rate-lock and dealer-network option, although neither should be assumed to have the lowest rate without a personalized quote.
- Good credit and a conventional dealer purchase: Compare PenFed, Navy Federal if eligible, Bank of America, and Alliant at the same term. A local credit union may beat all four.
- Fair credit: Capital One Auto Navigator offers a convenient soft-pull starting point. Consumers Credit Union reports broad estimated APR ranges, but its lowest rate will not be available to every applicant. Also check a local credit union or community bank.
- Bad credit or no credit: Focus first on affordability, a less expensive vehicle, a larger down payment, and credit-union options. Do not choose a lender solely because it advertises approval.
- Private-party, older, or unusual vehicle: LightStream’s unsecured structure avoids many collateral restrictions and permits private-party purchases. Its flexibility may come at a higher APR than a secured auto loan, so compare the total cost.
- Manufacturer 0% financing: The manufacturer’s captive lender may be the cheapest option on a qualifying model, but compare the waived cash rebate, short term, and eligibility requirements against an ordinary APR plus the rebate.
- Refinancing: Compare Alliant, a local credit union, your current bank, and other direct lenders after your credit improves or market rates fall. Check the remaining balance, vehicle restrictions, fees, and the new loan’s total interest.
Current average auto loan rates by credit score
The most useful rate benchmark is what borrowers with similar credit actually received, not a lender’s best-case advertisement. Experian’s Q1 2026 data reports average completed-loan APRs by VantageScore range:
| VantageScore range | Credit tier | Average new-car APR | Average used-car APR |
|---|---|---|---|
| 781–850 | Superprime | 4.55% | 6.30% |
| 661–780 | Prime | 6.23% | 8.77% |
| 601–660 | Nonprime | 9.67% | 14.03% |
| 501–600 | Subprime | 13.44% | 19.42% |
| 300–500 | Deep subprime | 16.01% | 21.77% |
The overall Q1 averages were 6.39% for new vehicles and 11.43% for used vehicles. Average monthly payments were $770 for new vehicles and $531 for used vehicles. Those payment figures describe completed loans; they are not a recommended budget or a prediction of your payment. See Experian’s full rate-by-credit-score data.

As an editorial benchmark based on the data above and the published lender floors:
- About 4%–5%: exceptionally competitive for a well-qualified new-car borrower, especially with a short term or a manufacturer or credit-union promotion.
- About 6%–7%: close to the broad new-car market average and potentially reasonable for a prime borrower, depending on term and fees.
- About 6%–9%: potentially competitive for a well-qualified used-car borrower, depending on vehicle age, mileage, and term.
- About 11%: close to the overall used-car average, but not necessarily a good offer for a prime borrower.
- Double-digit APRs: common among nonprime and subprime borrowers and for older, high-mileage, high-loan-to-value, or long-term loans. The question is whether the payment and total repayment remain affordable.
Different average-rate reports can show different numbers without either being wrong. Experian reports rates on loans in its Q1 dataset. NerdWallet reported May 2026 averages of 6.9% for new cars and 10.4% for used cars from Edmunds, while Cox Automotive’s sales-weighted May figures were 9.87% and 12.29%. The populations and methodologies differ, so these figures should not be combined into one universal market rate. NerdWallet explains the comparison and methodology.
Detailed lender reviews
1. PenFed: lowest advertised rate found, with an important condition
PenFed’s Car Buying Service displayed new-car rates as low as 3.39% APR for 36 months and 3.84% for 60 months. Its used-car floors were 4.34% for 36 months and 4.99% for 60 months. The service is powered by TrueCar and is available in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.
The key qualification is easy to miss: the discounted figures apply when the borrower purchases through PenFed’s Car Buying Service. That makes PenFed a strong first quote for someone who is comfortable using that shopping channel, but not automatically the best direct lender for every seller, vehicle, or borrower.

2. Navy Federal: especially strong for eligible military borrowers
Navy Federal’s rates dated July 20, 2026 were:
| Term | New vehicle | Used vehicle |
|---|---|---|
| 12–36 months | 3.89% | 4.79% |
| 37–60 months | 4.29% | 5.29% |
| 61–72 months | 4.59% | 5.39% |
| 73–84 months | 5.99% | 6.98% |
| 85–96 months | 7.39% | Not available |
Navy Federal says the rates assume excellent credit. Actual pricing depends on credit history, loan type, model year, mileage, term, and amount. It advertises preapprovals valid for up to 90 days and up to 100% financing subject to its requirements. A vehicle with more than 7,500 miles may not qualify for a term longer than 72 months, and 84–96-month loans require at least $30,000 financed.
Membership is open to eligible armed-forces members, veterans, Department of Defense personnel, and qualifying families. That restriction belongs next to the rate when comparing Navy Federal with national lenders. Check the Navy Federal rate table and eligibility rules.
3. Bank of America: national bank with a 30-day rate lock
Bank of America listed 60-month dealer-loan APRs of 5.14% for a new car and 5.34% for a used car as of July 13, 2026. The displayed rates assume excellent credit. BofA Rewards discounts can reduce the rate by 0.10–0.50 percentage points, depending on the customer’s tier.
BofA’s advantages are a national-bank workflow, a 30-day rate lock, and published terms that may include 48, 60, and 72 months depending on the loan type and collateral. Logged-in customers may be able to prequalify without a credit-score impact. The offer can still vary by credit history, loan amount, term, state, vehicle, and applicable discount. The cited rates are for dealer purchases, so ask separately about private-party financing.

4. Alliant Credit Union: strong digital credit-union comparison
Alliant published 60-month rates of 5.64% for a new vehicle, 5.89% for a used vehicle, and 5.89% for refinancing. It listed 8.89% for a used vehicle 10–15 years old on a 60-month term. Rates are as low as figures and can vary based on make and model, collateral, payment method, creditworthiness, and ability to repay.
Alliant offers terms up to 84 months, same-day approval in many cases, and no prepayment penalties. Its Car Buying Service can provide a 0.50-point APR discount. Verify whether the selected vehicle, payment method, term, and loan amount qualify for the published rate, and confirm private-party rules before making an offer.

5. Consumers Credit Union: flexible option for good or fair credit
NerdWallet’s June 11, 2026 comparison reported estimated Consumers Credit Union APR ranges of 4.74%–15.99% for new cars and 5.24%–16.49% for used cars, with a maximum loan amount of $100,000 and a disclosed minimum score of 600. Treat these as third-party estimates, not a guaranteed CCU quote or a substitute for checking the lender’s current rate sheet.
Membership requires a one-time, nonrefundable $5 fee to the Consumers Cooperative Association and a minimum $5 share or savings balance. Those small costs should still be included in a lender comparison. Review the membership requirements and auto-loan information before applying.
6. LightStream: flexible unsecured financing
LightStream is different from the other principal options because its auto loan is unsecured. It offers $5,000–$100,000, does not restrict vehicle year, make, model, or mileage, requires no down payment, and does not place a lien on the vehicle. Its product has fixed rates, simple interest, no loan fees, and no prepayment penalties. It permits private-party purchases and can fund the same day when approval and verification are completed by the stated cutoff.

That flexibility is the point—not necessarily the lowest APR. A secured auto lender can often price a strong borrower more cheaply because the vehicle secures the debt. LightStream’s lowest rates require excellent credit, AutoPay rates are 0.50 percentage points below invoice-payment rates, and its July 26, 2026 rate table showed a maximum APR of 25.39%. Compare LightStream with other unsecured offers and with a secured loan only after considering the value of its collateral flexibility.
See LightStream’s auto-loan terms and rate table.
7. Capital One Auto Navigator: convenient soft-pull shopping
Capital One Auto Navigator lets shoppers prequalify in minutes, view personalized rates and payments without affecting their credit score, search participating dealer inventory, and adjust the down payment or term. The shopper then completes the final application at the dealership.
Prequalification is not final approval. The lender may verify income, credit, vehicle details, and other information later, and the final rate or payment may differ. Capital One is best treated as a convenient comparison and shopping tool, especially for fair-credit borrowers, rather than as a lowest-rate winner. Start at Capital One Auto Navigator.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors8. Chase Auto: rate lock and dealer-network workflow
Chase advertises prequalification without a credit-score impact, a 30-day rate lock, dealer-network financing, and most credit decisions within two to three hours, although some decisions take longer. The rate lock applies to the specific vehicle, dealer, and terms requested. Changing those details can change the rate.
Chase does not finance private-party vehicle purchases. Its convenience can be valuable for a dealer purchase, but obtain an outside quote before visiting the dealership and ask Chase whether the exact vehicle qualifies. See Chase Auto’s current terms.

Bank, credit union, online lender, or dealer?
| Financing source | Potential advantage | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Credit union | Often competitive pricing, personal service, and potentially flexible underwriting | Membership, geography, vehicle, payment, or funding rules may apply |
| National bank | Rate locks, familiar online systems, and broad dealer relationships | Published floors generally assume excellent credit and may exclude private sellers |
| Online lender | Fast comparison, flexible collateral rules, or unsecured financing | Rates and fees vary; an unsecured loan may cost more than a secured auto loan |
| Dealer financing | Convenience, multiple lender submissions, and possible manufacturer-subsidized APR promotions | The dealer may mark up the lender’s buy rate or add products to the amount financed |
| Buy-here-pay-here dealer | May approve applicants conventional lenders decline | Often higher rates; positive payments may not be reported consistently, while negative information may be reported |
Dealer financing is not automatically bad. A manufacturer’s 0% promotion can beat an outside loan, and a dealer may find a lender willing to offer better terms. But the dealer may receive a lender’s buy rate and present a higher consumer rate, keeping or sharing the difference. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains that this markup can be negotiated.
How to get the lowest auto-loan rate
- Check your credit reports first. Get reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion and dispute errors before applying. The FTC directs consumers to AnnualCreditReport.com for free reports. A score shown by a credit-card app may not match the score model or auto-specific score used by a lender.
- Set an all-in vehicle budget. Include the negotiated vehicle price, sales tax, title and registration, dealer documentation fee, down payment, trade-in value, negative equity, insurance, fuel or charging, maintenance, and optional products. The FTC recommends obtaining the out-the-door price in writing before discussing financing.
- Get two or three offers. A useful mix is a local credit union or bank, a national lender or credit union, and dealer or manufacturer financing. Ask every lender whether the inquiry is soft or hard, whether the rate is conditional, and how long the offer remains valid.
- Keep applications in a concentrated shopping period. The CFPB says auto-loan inquiries made while rate shopping generally count as one inquiry, but the applicable period varies by scoring model from approximately 14 to 45 days. Read the CFPB rate-shopping guidance and avoid spreading applications over several months.
- Compare identical scenarios. Give each lender the same loan amount, term, new-or-used status, vehicle year and mileage, down payment, trade-in treatment, autopay assumption, and optional products. Compare APR to APR—not one lender’s 36-month rate with another lender’s 72-month rate.
- Negotiate the vehicle price separately. You can tell the dealer: “I have outside financing. Let’s agree on the out-the-door price first. Then show me whether your financing beats my APR and total cost.” This prevents a lower monthly payment from hiding a higher vehicle price, longer term, or financed add-ons.
- Review the final Truth in Lending disclosure. Before signing, confirm the APR, interest rate, amount financed, finance charge, total of payments, number and amount of payments, due date, late fees, prepayment terms, and every financed add-on. The CFPB’s auto-loan key terms explain the required concepts.
- Confirm funding and contract finality. Ask whether the approval is final or conditional, whether the rate is locked, and whether the dealer can ask you to sign a replacement contract. Keep copies of every document before leaving.
Prequalification versus preapproval
The words are not standardized across lenders, so ask what each offer actually means.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Prequalification is usually an estimate based on limited information and often uses a soft credit inquiry. It is useful for budgeting and comparing likely payments, but it may not be a final offer.
- Preapproval usually involves more documentation and may involve a hard inquiry. It is generally a stronger negotiating tool and may specify a maximum amount, term, and rate.
- Final approval occurs after the lender verifies the borrower and the exact vehicle, seller, title, loan-to-value ratio, and other conditions.
- Funded contract means the final loan documents have been accepted and the lender has funded the purchase. A prequalification or conditional approval is not the same thing.
Capital One and Chase advertise soft-pull prequalification. Bank of America may offer a no-impact prequalification for logged-in customers. Navy Federal advertises preapprovals that may remain valid for up to 90 days. For every lender, ask whether the quoted APR is locked, what can change it, and whether accepting the offer creates a hard inquiry.
APR versus interest rate: compare the right number
The nominal interest rate describes the rate used to calculate interest. APR incorporates the interest rate plus certain finance charges and is generally the more useful number for comparing loans. Compare APR to APR, while also checking fees that may not be represented the same way in every quote.
Before signing, the Truth in Lending disclosure should show the APR, amount financed, finance charge, payment schedule, and total of payments. A loan with a slightly lower monthly payment is not necessarily cheaper if it has a higher APR, a longer term, or more financed products.
How much does the loan term change the cost?
Using a $30,000 loan at 6.39% APR, excluding taxes, fees, and add-ons, the approximate comparison is:
| Term | Approximate monthly payment | Approximate total interest | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60 months | $585 | $5,126 | Highest payment of the three, but lowest interest cost |
| 72 months | $503 | $6,196 | About $82 less per month than 60 months, but more interest |
| 84 months | $444 | $7,287 | About $141 less per month than 60 months, but roughly $2,161 more interest |
The payment reduction can make 84 months look attractive, but it does not make the vehicle cheaper. Long terms also increase the chance that the loan balance exceeds the car’s value, particularly with a small down payment, a rapidly depreciating vehicle, or negative equity rolled in from a trade.
Experian reported that 35.55% of new-vehicle loans and 31.54% of used-vehicle loans extended beyond six years in Q1 2026. That shows how common long terms are, not that they are financially optimal. Choose the shortest term that leaves a sustainable emergency cushion. Treat 72 months as a careful affordability decision and be particularly cautious with 84- or 96-month financing on used vehicles. A conservative guideline from NerdWallet is no more than 60 months for a new car and 36 months for a used car when possible; it is guidance, not a universal rule. See Experian’s automotive finance trends.
Down payments, trade-ins, and negative equity
A larger down payment reduces the amount financed, payment, and loan-to-value ratio. It may improve approval odds or pricing and reduce the risk of being underwater. However, do not empty an emergency fund solely to reduce an APR by a small amount. Compare the interest savings with the value of keeping cash available for repairs, insurance deductibles, job loss, or other emergencies.
Handle a trade-in as a separate calculation. If the vehicle is worth less than its payoff balance, the difference is negative equity. Rolling that balance into the new loan increases the amount financed and loan-to-value ratio, raising both the payment and the risk of owing more than the new vehicle is worth. Ask the dealer to show the old payoff, trade value, negative-equity amount, new vehicle price, and new amount financed as separate lines. The FTC’s car-financing guide discusses this risk.

Manufacturer 0% APR promotions: when are they actually cheaper?
A 0% offer can be the lowest-cost financing, but only after comparing the entire transaction. Promotions are commonly limited to particular models or model years, short terms, and very high credit tiers. The buyer may also have to give up a cash rebate.
Compare these two calculations:
- Promotional offer: vehicle price after any forfeited rebate plus 0% financing over the promotional term.
- Ordinary financing: vehicle price after the cash rebate plus the total interest from the outside loan.
Also compare the required down payment, payment, term, dealer fees, and add-ons. A 0% loan over 36 or 48 months may have a much higher payment than a 6% loan over 60 months. The lower APR is not automatically the lower total-cost offer if the rebate is substantial.
Bad credit, fair credit, and first-time borrowers
Approval is possible with fair or bad credit, but a low advertised rate is unlikely to be available to every applicant. Experian’s Q1 2026 averages were 9.67% new and 14.03% used for nonprime borrowers, 13.44% and 19.42% for subprime borrowers, and 16.01% and 21.77% for deep-subprime borrowers. A lender’s actual offer can be higher or lower depending on the full application and vehicle.

- Consider a cosigner only after both people understand the legal obligation.
- Lower the loan amount by choosing a less expensive vehicle or making a sustainable down payment.
- Compare direct lenders before accepting dealer-arranged or buy-here-pay-here financing.
- Reject any offer that does not clearly disclose APR, total payments, fees, payment reporting, and optional products.
- Wait and improve credit if the proposed payment and total cost are unaffordable.
A first-time borrower may have solid income but a thin credit file. A smaller loan, larger down payment, stable employment history, or qualified cosigner may help. A cosigner is legally responsible if the borrower does not pay and may be liable even if the cosigner never drives the car. Review the CFPB’s explanation of cosigner liability.
Buy-here-pay-here dealers may approve applicants conventional lenders decline, but the CFPB says they typically charge higher rates and may report negative payment information without consistently reporting positive payments. Approval alone is not evidence that the loan is affordable. See the CFPB’s buy-here-pay-here guidance.

Do not assume a lender’s dealer-purchase loan can be used to buy from an individual. Chase explicitly does not finance private-party purchases. LightStream permits private-party financing because its loan is unsecured and does not impose vehicle-age or mileage restrictions. Other lenders may require a dealer, title verification, inspection, minimum vehicle value, maximum age, maximum mileage, or direct payment to the seller or existing lienholder.
For a private-party loan, ask about the required bill of sale, title, payoff documents, inspection, proof of insurance, seller identification, and funding procedure. Do not hand over money based only on a prequalification. For an older or high-mileage vehicle, expect possible higher APRs, shorter terms, lower loan-to-value limits, minimum loan amounts, or no financing. A lender’s new-car rate is irrelevant if the vehicle does not qualify under its collateral rules.
Dealer-financing traps to check before signing
Dealer rate markup
The dealer may receive a lender’s buy rate and offer you a higher rate. Ask whether the dealer’s rate includes markup and invite the dealer to beat your outside preapproval. Compare the final APR and total cost, not just the dealer’s payment.
Add-ons and payment packing
Common optional products include GAP coverage, extended warranties or service contracts, VIN etching, paint or fabric protection, tire and wheel coverage, and credit insurance. The FTC says add-ons are optional and should be listed with their prices before signing. Use the FTC’s warning about unwanted add-ons and do not accept a product merely because it appears in a prepared contract.
Negative equity hidden in the new loan
Ask for the trade-in payoff and value in writing. A dealer can describe the trade as paid off while actually adding the shortfall to the new amount financed. That can make the loan much larger than the new vehicle’s value.
Conditional approval or spot delivery
Do not assume the financing is final because you drove the vehicle home. Ask whether the contract is fully approved and funded or conditional on later lender approval. Keep copies of the signed contract and watch for requests to return, renegotiate, increase the down payment, or sign a replacement contract with a higher APR or payment.
Monthly-payment negotiations
Start with the out-the-door price, then the amount financed, APR, and term. A dealer can reduce the payment by extending the term, raising the price, adding a down payment, or financing products. A lower payment is not a better offer if the total amount repaid rises.
Refinancing an auto loan
Refinancing can make sense when your credit has improved, market rates have fallen, the original dealer-arranged rate included markup, or you want a shorter term without an unmanageable payment. Compare the new APR, remaining balance, remaining term, new term, fees, vehicle age and mileage rules, and total interest from today forward.
Experian reported that Q1 2026 refinancers reduced their interest rate by an average of 2.2 percentage points and lowered monthly payments by an average of $81. Credit-union refinancers saved an average of $101 per month, compared with $60 for bank refinancers. These are averages among people who refinanced, not guaranteed savings. A lower payment can still increase total interest if the new lender restarts the loan over a longer term. Compare Alliant’s published refinance rate, a local credit union, your bank, and other direct lenders.
2026 auto-loan interest tax deduction
For tax years 2025 through 2028, the IRS says individuals may be able to deduct up to $10,000 per year of qualified passenger-vehicle loan interest, subject to income limits and eligibility rules. The loan generally must originate after December 31, 2024, finance a qualifying new vehicle whose original use begins with the taxpayer, be for personal use, be secured by a first lien, and involve a car, minivan, van, SUV, pickup, or motorcycle with final assembly in the United States. The IRS summary says used vehicles and lease payments do not qualify.
This is tax information, not a reason to borrow more or choose a particular lender. Income phaseouts, vehicle identification and assembly rules, reporting requirements, and other conditions apply. Check the IRS Topic 505 summary, its eligibility guidance, and a tax professional before relying on the deduction.

Bottom line
Start with PenFed if its Car Buying Service is acceptable and you are targeting the lowest advertised rate. Check Navy Federal if you qualify through military or Department of Defense membership. Add Bank of America or Chase for a national-bank rate lock, Alliant or a local credit union for a secured comparison, and LightStream when private-party or unusual-vehicle flexibility matters. Capital One can provide a convenient soft-pull starting point for fair-credit shoppers.
The winning offer is the one with the lowest total cost for the exact vehicle and term you can comfortably repay—not necessarily the lowest advertised APR or monthly payment. Get outside financing first, negotiate the vehicle price separately, invite the dealer to beat the offer, and verify the final APR and total of payments before signing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good APR for a car loan in 2026?
For a well-qualified borrower, roughly 4%–5% is exceptionally competitive for a new car and about 6%–9% can be competitive for a used car, depending on the vehicle and term. Experian’s Q1 2026 completed-loan averages were 4.55% new and 6.30% used for superprime borrowers, versus 6.39% and 11.43% across all borrowers. These are benchmarks, not guaranteed offers.
Is 6% a good car-loan rate?
It can be a good rate for a prime new-car borrower and may be competitive for a well-qualified used-car borrower, but the answer depends on the term, vehicle age, fees, and credit tier. Compare the APR, amount financed, and total payments with at least two other offers.
Is it better to finance through a bank or dealership?
Neither is always better. A dealer may offer a manufacturer-subsidized promotion or submit one application to several lenders, but it may also mark up the lender’s buy rate or add optional products. Obtain a bank or credit-union preapproval first, negotiate the out-the-door price separately, and let the dealer try to beat the outside APR and total cost.
Does auto-loan preapproval hurt your credit?
It depends on the lender’s inquiry. Prequalification often uses a soft inquiry, while preapproval may use a hard inquiry, although terminology is not standardized. Ask before applying. Auto-loan inquiries made during a concentrated rate-shopping period generally count as one inquiry, with a window of approximately 14–45 days depending on the scoring model.
How many auto lenders should I compare?
Two or three is a practical minimum: one local credit union or bank, one national lender or online lender, and dealer or manufacturer financing. Submit applications close together, use the same loan assumptions, and compare APR and total repayment rather than advertised monthly payments.
What credit score gets the best auto-loan rates?
Experian classified VantageScores of 781–850 as superprime in its Q1 2026 data. Those borrowers averaged 4.55% for new vehicles and 6.30% for used vehicles. Lenders also consider credit history, income, debt-to-income ratio, down payment, loan-to-value ratio, vehicle age and mileage, loan amount, and term.

Should I choose 60, 72, or 84 months?
Choose the shortest term that leaves a sustainable emergency cushion. On a $30,000 loan at 6.39%, the approximate payments were $585 for 60 months, $503 for 72 months, and $444 for 84 months, while total interest rose from about $5,126 to $7,287. Be especially cautious with 84- or 96-month terms on used vehicles.
Can I refinance my auto loan later?
Often, yes, if the vehicle, balance, loan age, and lender rules qualify. Refinancing may help after credit improves, market rates fall, or the original dealer-arranged rate included markup. Compare savings from today forward, including fees and the possibility that a longer new term increases total interest.
Can I finance a private-party vehicle purchase?
Some lenders allow it and some do not. Chase says it does not finance private-party purchases. LightStream permits private-party purchases through its unsecured loan, which also has no vehicle-age or mileage restrictions. Other lenders may require a title, bill of sale, inspection, payoff documents, and direct seller payment.
Are 0% manufacturer offers really cheaper?
Sometimes, but compare the complete transaction. A 0% promotion may require excellent credit, a specific model, a short term, and giving up a cash rebate. Calculate the promotional vehicle price and payments against the discounted vehicle price plus interest from an outside loan.

The IRS says a qualified taxpayer may be able to deduct up to $10,000 of interest annually for certain passenger-vehicle loans in tax years 2025–2028. Eligibility includes requirements involving loan date, personal use, a first lien, a qualifying new vehicle, income limits, and U.S. final assembly. Used vehicles and lease payments do not qualify under the IRS summary. Verify the current rules with the IRS or a tax professional.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Compare PenFed’s buying-service rate, Navy Federal if eligible, a national bank such as Bank of America or Chase, a credit union such as Alliant or a local institution, and dealer or manufacturer financing. Normalize the loan amount and term, negotiate the car price separately, and judge the offer by APR, total interest, total payments, and contract conditions—not by the lowest advertised rate or monthly payment alone.
