What a Football Finance Expert Actually Said About Wrexham and the Premier League’s Big Six

Kieran Maguire discussed what promotion could mean for Wrexham’s player-spending limits—not the club joining or displacing the Premier League Big Six.

Wrexham AFC has not joined the Premier League’s “Big Six,” and the available reporting does not show football finance expert Kieran Maguire saying it would displace one. His January 2026 comments concerned a different question: what the club might be allowed to spend on players if it earned promotion. Wrexham’s commercial growth is striking for a Championship club, but the published figures do not put it on the Big Six’s financial scale.

What was the claim about Wrexham?

The headline-style claim that a football finance expert issued a Premier League “Big Six” verdict about Wrexham needs qualification. In a BBC Sport report published on 27 January 2026, Maguire discussed how the squad-cost ratio would apply if Wrexham were promoted. The report does not quote him saying Wrexham was part of the Big Six or would replace one of its clubs.

Maguire said: “If Wrexham are promoted to the Premier League, then they will come under the umbrella of the new squad cost ratio, which effectively would allow Wrexham to only be allowed to spend 85% of their revenue on players.” That was a conditional explanation reported in January 2026, not evidence that Wrexham had been promoted or that it had Big Six-level finances. BBC Sport’s January 2026 report also discussed the club’s commercial profile and investment.

How large is Wrexham’s financial gap with the Big Six?

Wrexham’s reported 2024–25 turnover was £33.3 million, while Deloitte’s figures for the 2022–23 Premier League season put each Big Six club’s revenue between £464 million and £718 million. The other 14 Premier League clubs averaged £184 million that season. Those numbers make the scale difference clear, but they are not an apples-to-apples comparison: Wrexham’s figure is from a different season and its Championship accounts, while the Deloitte benchmark covers Premier League clubs in 2022–23.

The House of Commons Library cited Deloitte’s figures in its 23 April 2025 briefing on football finance. “Big Six” is a conventional label; the cited revenue figures show the gap in that particular season, not a current, same-year comparison with Wrexham. The Commons Library briefing provides the dated benchmark.

What drove Wrexham’s 2024–25 revenue?

BBC Sport’s account of Wrexham’s 2024–25 finances shows why commercial income is central to the club’s story. The following are reported figures for that accounting period:

Wrexham T-Shirt
  • Welsh football club design. A design based on Wrexham Wales/Wrecsam Cymru
  • Residents of Wrexham Wales/Wrecsam Cymru will love representing their hometown with this design
  • Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
Revenue category Wrexham AFC, 2024–25
Turnover £33.3 million
Retail revenue £5,067,604, up 13.7%
Sponsorship revenue £17,336,378, up 31.5%

These figures indicate that merchandise and sponsorship contributed meaningfully to Wrexham’s income. They do not establish that its total commercial revenue matched that of any particular Premier League club.

Wrexham chief executive Michael Williamson offered a separate estimate in the BBC report: “From a commercial standpoint, if you compared us to Championship clubs, I’m sure we’d be among the top and – on commercial revenues only – we would probably surpass a handful of Premier League clubs, around four or five I would guess.” That is Williamson’s estimate, not an independently audited comparison in the report. BBC Sport’s report on Wrexham’s 2024–25 accounts covers the turnover and revenue breakdown.

Revenue growth did not mean a profit

Wrexham’s 2024–25 accounts also showed wages of £19.95 million and reported losses of £14.85 million, according to BBC Sport. The reported operating loss includes promotion bonuses and an exceptional £3.76 million write-off relating to Argentex. The loss figure should therefore be read with those items in view, rather than treated as a simple measure of recurring costs.

The club also received significant investment, which is distinct from revenue earned through football and commercial activity. BBC Sport reported in January 2026 that the New York-based Allyn family took an approximately 15% stake in 2024; share issues in March and September 2025 brought in about £14 million and £7 million, respectively; and Apollo Sports Capital was investing. The report described almost £50 million in recent investment. It also noted that funding may go toward infrastructure, the academy and the women’s team, rather than all being available for the men’s playing squad. The BBC report on Wrexham’s investment sets out those details.

What would promotion change?

Maguire’s January 2026 point was about a potential rule constraint, not a guarantee of spending power. He said a promoted Wrexham would come under the then-described squad-cost ratio, which he characterized as limiting player spending to 85% of revenue. That description is tied to his comments at that time and the promotion scenario he discussed; it should not be treated as a timeless statement of the rules or as evidence that investment could simply be spent on players.

Promotion would also change Wrexham’s division and its financial context, but the cited sources do not supply a same-season projection of its Premier League revenue or a like-for-like spending comparison with the Big Six. Maguire’s comment supports a conditional discussion of squad-cost limits, not a conclusion that Wrexham would immediately operate at the level of England’s richest clubs.

Wrexham’s Premier League status

Wrexham’s 2025–26 promotion bid ended without success. The Associated Press reported on 4 May 2026 that the club remained outside the Premier League after the final-day result. The Premier League therefore remains a future ambition or scenario in the context of these figures, not Wrexham’s current division. The Associated Press report covers the result and the club’s continued ambitions.
