Korean Air finalized its order for 103 Boeing aircraft on September 16, 2026. The order comprises 20 Boeing 777-9s, 25 787-10s, 50 737-10s and eight 777-8 Freighters. The deal fulfills the airline’s commitment announced in August 2025; the finalized announcement does not give a revised aircraft contract price or an updated delivery calendar.
What planes did Korean Air order from Boeing?
The final mix is unchanged from the 2025 commitment. Boeing’s August 2025 announcement supplied the model descriptions and specifications below; the September 2026 announcement confirmed the quantities in the finalized order.
| Aircraft | Quantity | Role | Boeing-published capacity and range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boeing 777-9 | 20 | Passenger widebody | 426 passengers in a two-class configuration; 13,510 km (7,295 nautical miles) |
| Boeing 787-10 | 25 | Passenger widebody | Up to 336 passengers; 11,730 km (6,330 nautical miles) |
| Boeing 737-10 | 50 | Single-aisle passenger aircraft | Up to 230 passengers; range up to 5,740 km (3,100 nautical miles) |
| Boeing 777-8 Freighter (777-8F) | 8 | Cargo freighter | Passenger capacity and range not stated in Boeing’s announcement |
These are Boeing’s model-level published figures, not Korean Air’s confirmed cabin layouts, seat counts or route plans. Boeing described the 737-10 as the largest model in the 737 MAX family. The 777-8 Freighter is the first order by Korean Air for that freighter variant, according to Boeing’s 2025 announcement. Boeing’s August 25, 2025 announcement; Boeing’s September 16, 2026 finalization announcement.
When did the order become final, and when are the aircraft expected?
Boeing announced Korean Air’s commitment to acquire the 103 aircraft on August 25, 2025. Korean Air said the planes were expected to enter service sequentially through the late 2030s. On September 16, 2026, Boeing announced that the order had been finalized, and Korean Air separately confirmed the final aircraft and engine agreements.

Why does Korean Air say it is modernizing its fleet?
Korean Air says the purchase is intended to prepare for long-term growth and its integration with Asiana Airlines. The airline also cites fleet modernization, operating and fuel efficiency, increased transport capacity and improved customer service. It said ordering aircraft ahead of time was partly a response to delivery delays since the pandemic.

In 2025, the airline described a long-term fleet centered on five aircraft families: Boeing 777, 787 and 737, and Airbus A350 and A321neo. It presented a more streamlined fleet, economies of scale, lower fuel use and emissions, added capacity and better customer satisfaction as expected benefits. These are company goals and projections; the announcements do not independently establish realized savings or emissions reductions.
Boeing also made performance claims in its 2025 announcement: it said the 777-9 would use 20% less fuel and produce 20% fewer emissions than the aircraft it would replace; it made the same comparison for the 737-10. For the 777-8 Freighter, Boeing claimed 30% better fuel efficiency and emissions than the aircraft it would replace. These are manufacturer-published comparisons, not independently verified outcomes or Korean Air operating results. Boeing, August 25, 2025.

What other agreements were finalized?
Alongside the aircraft purchase, Korean Air finalized a purchase of 21 spare engines from GE Aerospace and CFM International, plus a 15-year GE Aerospace engine-maintenance services agreement covering 28 aircraft. These are related agreements, separate from the order for 103 Boeing airframes.
The 2025 announcement had described preliminary terms of 19 spare engines and a 20-year maintenance agreement. The 21-engine purchase and 15-year service term are the finalized terms Korean Air reported in September 2026. Korean Air, September 16, 2026; Korean Air, August 26, 2025.

What is known about the order’s value?
Korean Air stated a value of $36.2 billion for the aircraft commitment in 2025. That figure belongs to the announced commitment; the reviewed 2026 finalization announcement does not provide a revised final aircraft contract price. It should not be treated as confirmation of the amount ultimately paid.
Boeing estimated in 2025 that the commitment could support 135,000 jobs across the United States. That is Boeing’s estimate, not an independently verified employment outcome. Korean Air, August 26, 2025; Boeing, August 25, 2025.
