Historical rate snapshot: The account details in this article were reported as of April 12, 2026. Money market account APYs are variable and may no longer be available.
The best money market accounts in the April 2026 comparison offered listed APYs from about 3.20% to 3.90%, although the comparison headline referenced rates as high as 4.00%. The highest APY shown among the final listed accounts was 3.90% for ZYNLO Money Market—not 4.00%. That difference appears to reflect a stale or broader headline-level market claim; it should not be read as a guarantee that an account paid 4.00%.
For most savers, the right choice depends on more than the advertised yield. Check whether the APY applies to your entire balance, whether you must use a debit card to qualify, how many withdrawals are allowed, whether checks or ATMs are available, what fees apply and whether your deposits are insured. For current rates, do not rely on this historical article; consult the institution’s current rate sheet or a current comparison such as Forbes Advisor’s current money market account page.
Quick comparison of the April 2026 accounts
The table below separates the April APY snapshot from the features that determine whether that rate is useful to you. “Not stated” means the supplied April comparison or account materials did not establish the detail; it does not mean the account had no such requirement.

APYs and features are historical and can change. Account agreements, rate sheets and fee schedules control. A credit union may call its earnings a dividend rather than interest.
Best money market accounts by saver profile
Best no-frills option: Vio Bank Cornerstone Money Market Savings
Vio Bank was a strong choice for a saver who wanted a competitive yield without a monthly maintenance fee and did not need a debit card or checkbook. The April snapshot listed a 3.65% APY, a $100 opening deposit and a $0 monthly fee.
Vio’s account is built more for saving and transferring money than for spending. The account materials do not report debit-card or check-writing access. Interest is calculated daily and credited monthly, and Vio’s product page describes daily compounding. Forbes reported a $10 charge for each withdrawal beyond six during a monthly statement cycle. Vio is FDIC-insured up to applicable limits.
Best fit: An emergency-fund or near-term-goal saver who can move money by transfer and values simplicity.

Main drawback: Limited checking-style access and a possible excess-withdrawal fee.
Best for large balances: Quontic Bank Money Market
Quontic stood out for a large-balance customer because the reported 3.80% APY applied across the listed balance tiers without the $100,000 cap that made Redneck Bank less attractive for larger deposits. The April comparison listed a $100 opening deposit and no monthly fee.
The account also provides the access many people expect from a money market account: checks, a debit card and access to approximately 90,000 surcharge-free ATMs. However, the yield may depend on activity. Quontic’s rate sheet dated April 14, 2026, states that customers may need to complete 10 qualifying point-of-sale transactions of at least $10 each per statement cycle. Check the applicable rate sheet and account agreement rather than assuming the advertised APY is automatic.
Quontic describes the product in its FAQ as a checking account with money-market features. That helps explain why it offers more payment tools than a transfer-only account, but it also means the activity requirement deserves particular attention.

Best fit: A customer with a substantial cash balance who wants both yield and checks, debit-card access and ATMs.
Main drawback: The qualifying debit-card activity could be inconvenient or could cause the account to pay a different rate if not met.
Best for a balance under $100,000: Redneck Bank Mega Money Market
Redneck Bank’s April snapshot showed up to 3.85% APY on the first $100,000, with balances above $100,000 reportedly earning 0.50%. It had no monthly fee and included a Mastercard debit card plus access to thousands of ATMs.
The balance cap is the central issue. This is not a 3.85% account for an unlimited balance. A customer with $150,000 would earn roughly $3,850 on the first $100,000 and $250 on the next $50,000, or about $4,100 in total before taxes. That is an approximate blended yield of 2.73% on the full balance, assuming the reported rates remained unchanged. A 3.80% account paying that rate across $150,000 would produce approximately $5,700 instead.
Redneck allows six free debits per monthly cycle and charges $5 for each debit after six. Electronic statements are free, while paper statements cost $3 per month. The comparison table reportedly displayed a $0 minimum deposit, but the detailed account information and official product page identify a $500 minimum opening deposit; the $500 figure is the safer one to use.
The official product page linked above displays 3.70%, illustrating why the 3.85% figure must be treated as an April historical rate rather than a current offer.
Best fit: A saver whose balance stays below $100,000 and who can remain within the debit limit.
Main drawback: The low rate on the excess balance can sharply reduce the blended return for larger deposits.

Best for frequent account activity: ZYNLO Money Market, with a disclosure warning
ZYNLO had the highest APY shown in the April comparison: 3.90%. It required no opening deposit, had no monthly fee and stated that a minimum balance of $0.01 was required to earn APY.
ZYNLO’s consumer-facing product page advertises unlimited transactions. However, the historical Forbes account description referred to six transactions per statement cycle without an excess fee. Those statements conflict. Before calling ZYNLO the best account for frequent activity, review the dated ZYNLO account disclosures that applied when the April rate was available and retain a copy for your records.
The account appears designed for digital transfers rather than conventional checking access. The historical description did not report the same check-writing or debit-card tools offered by Quontic or Ally. ZYNLO identifies the account as a division of PeoplesBank in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and advertises FDIC-insured deposits.
Best fit: A digital saver who prioritizes the highest listed April APY and does not need checks, a debit card or routine ATM access—provided the transaction terms are confirmed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Best for beginner savers: Ally Bank Money Market
Ally’s 3.20% APY was not the highest in the April list, but it offered a straightforward combination of no minimum deposit, no monthly maintenance fee, checks, a debit card and broad ATM access. Ally said customers could use more than 75,000 Allpoint and MoneyPass ATMs without an Ally fee and that it would reimburse up to $10 per statement cycle for other ATM fees.
Ally also advertises 24/7 customer support. Certain withdrawals and transfers are limited to 10 per statement cycle. Ally says it does not charge an excess-transaction fee, but it may close an account for repeated violations.
Best fit: A first-time MMA customer who wants familiar access features and customer support more than the maximum available APY.

Best for online banking and higher balances: First Internet Bank Money Market Savings
First Internet Bank’s historical APY was listed as 3.09% or 3.64%, depending on balance. Its formal Truth in Savings disclosure identifies the higher tier as applying above $1 million, not $5 million. That distinction matters because a reader with a smaller balance may not qualify for the higher rate.
The account requires $100 to open. Its $5 monthly maintenance fee is waived when the average daily balance is at least $4,000. Interest compounds and credits monthly, and the bank offers up to $10 per month in foreign ATM surcharge rebates.
First Internet can make sense for a larger balance, but the monthly fee can consume a meaningful amount of interest for a smaller account. A customer below $4,000 should compare the $60 annual fee with the yield difference at a no-fee competitor. The bank’s disclosure also describes up to six specified transfers or withdrawals per month and a $5 excessive-withdrawal fee.
Recommended Free Tools
Best fit: An online-banking customer with enough money to avoid the monthly fee, especially one who can qualify for the higher balance tier.
Main drawback: The fee, balance threshold and transaction rules make it less attractive for smaller or highly active accounts.
Best for check writing: Sallie Mae Money Market
Sallie Mae offered a 3.55% APY in the April snapshot, with no minimum deposit and no monthly fee. It provides check-writing capability but no debit card, making it better suited to planned payments than frequent ATM withdrawals.
Sallie Mae says interest compounds daily and is paid monthly. Funds can be accessed through transfers and checks. Because the supplied materials do not establish a complete withdrawal schedule, review the current account agreement for transaction limits and fees before relying on the account for repeated payments.

Best fit: A saver who wants to write occasional checks from a savings account without paying a monthly fee.
Main drawback: No debit card means less convenient point-of-sale and ATM access.
Best credit-union money market account: Chevron Federal Credit Union MarketEdge
Chevron Federal Credit Union’s MarketEdge account offered up to 3.20% APY in the historical comparison. Its official rate page shows tiered rates: lower balances earn less, and the highest listed tier begins at $25,000.
The account offers both checks and a debit card. Dividends compound daily and are credited monthly. Unlike a bank account, however, the reader must qualify for credit-union membership and maintain the required $25 Primary Share Savings balance. The apparent $0 opening deposit in the comparison should not be interpreted as universal access without those membership conditions.
Credit-union documents may call the return a dividend rate rather than an interest rate. Chevron’s eligible shares are generally insured by the NCUA through the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, subject to applicable limits.
Best fit: An eligible member who wants checking-style access and is willing to meet the membership and balance requirements.
Main drawback: The top APY requires at least $25,000, and lower tiers pay less.
Best competitive yield with no monthly fee: First Foundation Bank Online Money Market
First Foundation’s online money market account offered a 3.75% APY in the April comparison, with a $0 monthly fee. The rate is variable and may change at any time.

Its ATM reimbursement policy is especially relevant for customers who use cash. EverBank reimburses U.S. ATM fees without a stated monthly limit when the account maintains at least a $5,000 average daily balance. Below $5,000, reimbursement is capped at $15 per month.
EverBank says the account is available exclusively through its financial centers, so it may not be as convenient as an online-only account for every customer or location. Its terms state that rates and tiers are variable and can change without notice. Confirm whether an advertised rate is introductory or ongoing.
Best fit: A customer who wants ATM access and can maintain at least $5,000 to receive the broadest fee reimbursement.
Main drawback: Financial-center availability and variable tiers may make it less convenient than a fully online account.

What the 4.00% APY headline really means
The phrase up to 4.00% does not answer the questions that determine your actual return. Before opening an account, ask:
- Is the APY available to every customer or only new customers?
- Does it apply to the entire balance or only the first portion of a balance tier?
- Is there a maximum balance that earns the advertised rate?
- Must you make debit-card purchases or meet another activity requirement?
- Is the APY promotional, introductory or ongoing?
- Is the product actually a money market deposit account, rather than a CD or money market mutual fund?
- Was the rate available on the date shown in the comparison?
The April-indexed Forbes table showed ZYNLO at 3.90% as the highest listed APY. A March version of the comparison showed Quontic at 4.00%, while the April version showed Quontic at 3.80%. That change demonstrates how quickly variable deposit rates can move. The headline should therefore be understood as a historical market reference, not evidence that every listed account paid 4.00%.
Rates were also influenced by the short-term interest-rate environment. The Federal Reserve maintained its federal funds target range at 3.50% to 3.75% on March 18, 2026, before the April 12 snapshot, and maintained the same range on April 29. Deposit rates generally respond to the broader short-term-rate environment, but the Fed does not set an individual bank’s MMA APY. Each institution can change its variable rate independently. See the March 18 Federal Reserve statement and the April 29 statement.
For context, the FDIC reported a 0.57% national money market deposit rate as of April 20, 2026. The date matters: the national average and individual account APYs change over time. The leading accounts in this historical comparison were substantially above that average. See the FDIC’s April 2026 national rates data.
How much could $10,000 earn?
At a constant 3.90% APY, a $10,000 balance would earn approximately $390 over one year. At the 0.57% national average, the same balance would earn approximately $57. The approximate difference is $333 before taxes.
These are illustrations, not promises. APY incorporates the effect of compounding. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Regulation DD definition describes APY as an annualized percentage reflecting the interest paid based on the interest rate and compounding frequency. A variable APY can fall or rise during the year, and a tiered account can produce a different return depending on how the balance is distributed.
Money market account versus similar products
Money market deposit account
A money market deposit account is a bank or credit-union deposit product. It pays interest or dividends and may combine savings-style yields with checking-style features such as checks, debit cards or ATM withdrawals. Eligible deposits at an FDIC-insured bank or NCUA-insured credit union receive insurance up to applicable limits.
Money market mutual fund
A money market mutual fund is an investment product offered through a brokerage. It is not the same as a money market deposit account, is not FDIC-insured and can be exposed to investment risk. The FDIC’s insured-deposit guide identifies eligible deposit products while excluding mutual funds and securities from FDIC insurance.
High-yield savings account
A high-yield savings account may offer a similar or higher APY, often with fewer checking-style features. It can be a better fit for an emergency fund if you rarely need checks, debit-card purchases or ATM withdrawals.
Certificate of deposit
A CD generally offers a fixed rate for a specified term. It can be preferable when rate certainty matters, but withdrawing money early may trigger a penalty or otherwise reduce liquidity. None of the listed MMAs locks the APY for a fixed term.
Interest-bearing checking
Interest checking is designed for frequent spending and bill payments. It may offer a debit card, checks and more routine transaction access, but the yield is often lower or subject to activity requirements. Compare it when your account is part of your everyday spending system rather than a reserve.
Treasury bills
Treasury bills can provide a fixed-term cash-management option backed by the U.S. government, and they may have tax characteristics that differ from bank interest. They require more planning and do not provide the same convenient bank-account access as an MMA.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How to choose the right account
- Confirm the rate you can actually receive. Read the dated rate sheet. Check the balance tier, maximum balance, activity requirement, promotional period and whether the entire balance earns the stated APY.
- Match access to your use. Choose transfer-only access if the money is a reserve. Choose checks, a debit card or ATM access if you expect to make planned payments or need cash without moving money first.
- Read transaction rules. Look at the permitted number of withdrawals and transfers, which transactions count, excess-transaction fees and whether repeated violations can result in account closure.
- Separate opening minimums from earning minimums. A $0 opening deposit does not necessarily mean there is no balance requirement to earn APY. ZYNLO, for example, states that no deposit is required to open but that $0.01 is needed to earn APY. First Foundation requires $1,000 to open even though its stated minimum balance to earn APY is lower.
- Calculate all fees. Include monthly maintenance fees, excess-withdrawal fees, paper statements, wires, returned items, stop payments, check orders and ATM surcharges. A small fee can erase the yield advantage on a smaller balance.
- Verify insurance and legal structure. Confirm whether the account is directly at an FDIC-insured bank or an NCUA-insured credit union and how balances are grouped for coverage. For a fintech-branded product, identify the actual institution holding the deposit.
- Check operational details. Review customer-service hours, mobile-app functions, external-transfer timing, mobile check deposit, branch availability and the account-opening process. An ACH transfer may take longer than an internal transfer or a debit-card transaction; Forbes notes that some external transfers may take up to three business days, but that is not a universal promise.
Withdrawal limits: six is not a universal federal rule
Do not assume every MMA is governed by a federal six-withdrawal limit. In 2020, the Federal Reserve removed the numeric Regulation D limit on certain savings-deposit transfers and withdrawals. Banks and credit unions may still impose their own limits, fees or account-closing policies. The Federal Reserve’s Regulation D amendment explains the change.
The accounts in this comparison show why the institution’s agreement matters:
- Vio: Forbes reported a $10 fee for each withdrawal beyond six per monthly statement cycle.
- First Internet Bank: Its disclosure allows up to six specified transfers or withdrawals and lists a $5 excessive-withdrawal fee.
- Ally: Certain withdrawals and transfers are limited to 10 per statement cycle. Ally says it does not charge an excess-transaction fee but may close the account for repeated violations.
- Redneck Bank: Six debits are free each month, followed by a $5 charge for each additional debit.
- ZYNLO: Its public product page says unlimited transactions, while the historical comparison described six transactions per cycle without an excess fee. That conflict must be resolved with the account disclosure applicable to the April snapshot.
ATM withdrawals and point-of-sale transactions may be treated differently from ACH transfers, so ask which transaction types count before using an MMA as a checking substitute.
Deposit insurance and account safety
Deposit insurance protects eligible deposits if an insured bank fails; it does not guarantee that the bank will maintain its APY. A bank can lower a variable rate even while the account remains fully insured.

FDIC insurance generally covers up to $250,000 per depositor, per FDIC-insured bank, per ownership category. NCUA insurance provides comparable protection for eligible shares at federally insured credit unions. Review the FDIC ownership-category guidance and the NCUA share-insurance guidance.
Coverage is based on ownership category, not simply on the number of accounts. For example, an individual with $300,000 at one FDIC-insured bank is not automatically fully insured merely because the money is split between checking and a money market account. Deposits in the same ownership category at the same bank are generally aggregated. Someone with more than $250,000 should review ownership categories and consider distributing funds among institutions or structures only after understanding the rules.
Money market mutual funds are not deposit accounts and are not protected by FDIC insurance. “Safe” must therefore be defined precisely: deposit insurance protects eligible deposits against institutional failure up to the applicable limit, but it does not protect the APY from falling and does not cover investment products.
How the April comparison should be interpreted
“Best” is an editorial judgment, not a universal ranking. Forbes’ methodology gives APY and monthly fees 20% each and also considers balance requirements, customer sentiment, features, minimum deposit, app reviews and ATM access. That approach favors a balanced product; it may not identify the best account for a person with a particular balance or transaction pattern. App ratings and customer sentiment are also time-sensitive and should be dated rather than treated as permanent product characteristics.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe reported research universe also appears to vary by stage. One methodology presentation describes analyzing 140 accounts at 85 institutions, while another indexed summary refers to 59 accounts and 44 nationwide banks and credit unions. Those figures may represent an initial research universe and a final nationally available set rather than a single count. They should not be combined as though they describe the same screening stage.
Product pages and comparison tables can conflict. The most important examples in this snapshot are Redneck Bank’s $0 table entry versus its $500 detailed opening requirement, ZYNLO’s unlimited-transactions marketing claim versus the historical six-transaction description, First Internet Bank’s conflicting balance thresholds in different copy, and Quontic’s headline APY without the debit-card activity condition shown on its rate sheet. Dated rate sheets and formal account disclosures deserve priority over summary tables.
A practical pre-opening checklist
- Save a copy of the current APY, rate sheet and Truth in Savings disclosure.
- Write down the exact balance tier that applies to your deposit.
- Confirm whether the rate is variable, promotional or dependent on debit-card activity.
- Check the minimum opening deposit and the separate minimum balance to earn APY.
- Confirm whether checks, a debit card, ATMs and mobile check deposit are available.
- Identify whether external transfers, ATM withdrawals and point-of-sale purchases count toward a limit.
- Calculate the annual cost of monthly, paper-statement and excess-transaction fees.
- Verify the FDIC-insured bank or NCUA-insured credit union and your total deposits there by ownership category.
- Ask how long an ACH transfer normally takes and keep emergency cash in an account with appropriate access.
- Recheck the APY after opening; a variable-rate account can become uncompetitive without notice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 4.00% APY in the April 2026 headline guaranteed?
No. The April-indexed comparison listed ZYNLO at 3.90% as the highest APY among the final accounts. The 4.00% figure appears to be a headline-level or stale market reference, and a March version listed Quontic at 4.00% before the April version showed 3.80%. A specific 4.00% offer would need a dated rate sheet showing the product, balance tier and eligibility requirements.
Which account was best for $10,000?
For a $10,000 balance, compare the actual current APY, fees and access rather than relying on the historical label. In the April snapshot, ZYNLO had the highest listed APY at 3.90%, while Vio, Sallie Mae, First Foundation and others offered different combinations of yield and access. At a constant 3.90%, $10,000 would earn approximately $390 in one year before taxes.

Which account was best for $100,000?
Redneck Bank’s April snapshot offered up to 3.85% on the first $100,000, but the account’s debit rules and $500 opening requirement mattered. Quontic offered 3.80% with checks, a debit card and broad ATM access, subject to a qualifying debit-card activity requirement. The better choice depends on whether you value the slightly higher historical rate or broader access and fewer balance-cap concerns.
What is the best option for more than $250,000?
Do not choose solely by APY. Review FDIC or NCUA coverage, because deposits in the same ownership category at the same institution are generally aggregated. Quontic or First Internet Bank may be worth comparing for large balances, but calculate the applicable tiers and distribute funds or use ownership categories only after understanding the insurance rules.
Are money market accounts FDIC-insured?
A money market deposit account at an FDIC-insured bank is generally insured up to $250,000 per depositor, per bank, per ownership category. A comparable account at an NCUA-insured credit union generally receives share insurance through the NCUSIF. A money market mutual fund is a different investment product and is not FDIC-insured.
Can I write checks from a money market account?
Some can. Quontic, Ally, Sallie Mae and Chevron reported check-writing access; EverBank makes checks available on request. Vio and ZYNLO were described primarily as transfer-based accounts, and not every account’s check feature was established in the supplied materials. Confirm the agreement before opening.

Can I use a debit card or ATM with an MMA?
Access varies. Quontic, Redneck, Ally and Chevron offer debit-card access, while EverBank offers a debit card on request. Ally has more than 75,000 Allpoint and MoneyPass ATMs and reimburses up to $10 per statement cycle for other ATM fees. EverBank’s reimbursement is broader at a $5,000 average daily balance and capped at $15 per month below that.
Are money market withdrawals still limited to six per month?
Not by a universal federal rule. The Federal Reserve removed the numeric Regulation D limit in 2020, but individual institutions may keep their own limits, charge fees or close accounts for repeated violations. Vio, Redneck and First Internet Bank list six-related restrictions, Ally lists 10 certain transactions, and ZYNLO’s public descriptions conflict.
Can a bank lower my money market APY after I open the account?
Yes. The listed money market accounts have variable rates rather than fixed CD-style terms. A bank can lower or raise the APY after opening, often in response to market conditions, but it sets its own rate. A CD may be more appropriate if a fixed return is more important than liquidity.
Is a money market account better than a high-yield savings account?
It depends on how you use the money. A high-yield savings account may offer a similar or higher rate and can work well for an emergency fund. A money market account may be preferable when you need checks, a debit card or ATM access. Compare the actual APY, limits, fees and transfer speed.
Is a money market account the same as a money market mutual fund?
No. A money market account is a bank or credit-union deposit account that may qualify for FDIC or NCUA insurance. A money market mutual fund is an investment product offered through a brokerage, is not FDIC-insured and carries investment risk.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The April 2026 comparison did not establish a broadly available 4.00% money market account among its final listed products; the table topped out at 3.90% with ZYNLO. Choose based on the rate you can actually qualify for, the balance tier, transaction access, fees and insurance. ZYNLO was the historical yield leader, Quontic was more compelling for large balances and checking-style access, Redneck fit balances under $100,000, Ally prioritized ease of use, Sallie Mae prioritized checks and EverBank prioritized ATM reimbursement. Because every listed APY is variable, verify the current rate sheet and account agreement before transferring your money.
