The figure is an estimate reported from the notice, not a confirmed count of employees who ultimately left Amazon.
What the Washington filing reports
GeekWire reported on January 28, 2026, that a notice filed with Washington State’s Employment Security Department covered approximately 400 workers at Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go facilities in the Seattle area. The notice listed 11 facilities in Seattle, Bellevue, Mill Creek, and Puyallup, with separations expected on April 28, 2026. The report does not establish how many workers ultimately separated after any transfers or other changes.

These three sites account for 320 reported positions. GeekWire said smaller Amazon Go locations in downtown Seattle and Bellevue accounted for additional layoffs, with individual sites ranging from 4 to 17 employees; it did not provide a complete site-by-site breakdown for all 11 facilities. GeekWire’s January 28 report attributes the figures to the state notice.
Which jobs are affected, and what happens to workers?
GeekWire reported that the affected positions included retail store associates, food production associates, loss prevention specialists, and store managers. Amazon gave workers 90 days’ notice, compared with the 60-day requirement as characterized in GeekWire’s report. The company said workers who accept internal transfers before their separation date would not be laid off. The reported estimate therefore should not be read as the final number of people who lost their jobs.

How the Washington cuts fit the national store closures
The Washington filing is part of Amazon’s plan to close its physical Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores nationwide. GeekWire reported that 57 Amazon Fresh stores and 15 remaining Amazon Go locations were slated to close. Amazon’s January 27, 2026, company update said some locations would be converted to Whole Foods Market stores. These figures describe the announced plan at that time, not a verified current store inventory.
Amazon said it would continue Amazon Fresh as an online grocery brand. At the time of GeekWire’s report, same-day delivery of perishables was available in more than 2,300 U.S. cities, and Amazon planned to open more than 100 Whole Foods locations over the next several years. Those are dated company and report statements, not confirmation of current delivery coverage or completed store openings. Amazon’s January 27 update describes the company’s stated store strategy.

These are separate from Amazon’s corporate job cuts
GeekWire described the Washington store-related reductions as separate from the roughly 16,000 global corporate workforce reduction announced during the same week. The approximately 400 figure concerns workers covered by the Washington retail-store notice; it should not be added to or confused with the global corporate announcement without a source establishing how the counts relate.
