Social media is larger than ever, but there is no single, universally correct answer to which platform is biggest. DataReportal estimates that the world had 5.66 billion active social-media user identities in October 2025—equivalent to 68.7% of the global population. That figure represents identities, not necessarily unique people.

Facebook leads some self-reported-use surveys, YouTube leads some app-activity and total-time measures, WhatsApp leads preference and opening frequency, TikTok leads average daily time per Android user, and LinkedIn leads by registered professional membership. The right platform depends on the metric, audience, geography and objective.

Social media statistics at a glance

The latest broad global baseline comes from DataReportal’s Digital 2026 Global Overview, which uses data primarily through October 2025. Its estimate counts social-media user identities, so it should not be read as a precise count of individual human beings.

Measure Latest figure What it means
Global social-media user identities 5.66 billion Estimated identities active in October 2025; duplicates and multiple accounts may be included.
Share of global population represented 68.7% Calculated from the identity estimate and world-population estimates.
Year-over-year increase 259 million identities, or 4.8% October 2024 to October 2025; revisions to China and India data affect historical comparisons.
Global internet users 6.04 billion Equivalent to 73.2% internet penetration in October 2025.
People still offline 2.2 billion Estimated population without internet access in October 2025.
Social platforms used monthly 6.75 on average GWI survey of online adults in the second quarter of 2025.
Social and video-feed use 18 hours 36 minutes per week Approximately 2 hours 39 minutes per day; the definition includes social networks and video platforms.
Women aged 16–24 25 hours 45 minutes per week GWI estimate for combined social and video-feed use.

These numbers describe a mature but still expanding digital infrastructure. Growth is slower than the rapid expansion of the previous decade: DataReportal calculates roughly 21.5 million additional identities per month during the latest annual period, compared with nearly 1 million per day when averaged across the entire previous decade. That points toward future growth coming increasingly from regional penetration, older users, product adoption and greater commercial value per user—not simply from bringing first-time internet users online.

How to read social-media user statistics

Before comparing platforms, identify exactly what each number measures. A list that places LinkedIn’s registered members beside Reddit’s daily active uniques and YouTube’s video views can look precise while comparing fundamentally different things.

Common social-media metrics

  • MAU: Monthly active users—people active during a month, according to the platform’s definition.
  • DAU: Daily active users—people active during a day.
  • WAU: Weekly active users—people active during a week.
  • DAUq and WAUq: Reddit’s daily active uniques and weekly active uniques. These labels are not automatically equivalent to conventional DAU and WAU metrics.
  • Registered members: Accounts or people who have joined a service. LinkedIn’s member count is an example; membership is not the same as active use.
  • Ad reach: The audience advertisers may be able to reach. It is not necessarily the platform’s active-user population.
  • User identities: DataReportal’s aggregated estimate. One person can have multiple identities, and multiple people can potentially use one account.
  • Survey use: Respondents saying they used a platform during a stated period.
  • App activity: Usage measured through mobile-app tracking. It may exclude browsers, desktop users, China, iOS users or people who do not consent to tracking.
  • Total time: Aggregate time spent by a platform’s entire measured audience.
  • Average time per user: Average time for each measured user. This can favor a smaller platform with unusually intense usage.
  • Views: Content plays or exposures, not unique viewers. YouTube’s more than 200 billion daily Shorts views illustrate the distinction.

DataReportal notes that platform companies use incompatible definitions and that some large platforms do not regularly publish comparable active-user figures. Treat every statistic as a measurement with a scope, not as a universal population count.

How many people use social media worldwide?

The best current broad estimate is 5.66 billion social-media user identities worldwide as of October 2025. That represents 68.7% of the global population and increased by 259 million identities, or 4.8%, over the prior 12 months.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The estimate sits alongside 6.04 billion internet users, meaning most people who are online are also represented in social-media identity data. But approximately 2.2 billion people remained offline, and the global number should not be interpreted as universal access.

Two cautions matter when assessing growth:

  1. Identities are not necessarily unique people. A single person may maintain multiple accounts or use multiple platforms.
  2. Historical figures can change because the underlying data changes. DataReportal says revisions to internet-adoption figures for China and India affect comparisons with earlier years. An apparent jump in a chart may therefore reflect methodology or source revisions as well as organic growth.

China also requires special care. TikTok and China’s Douyin are separate services, so combining their numbers without an explicit explanation produces a misleading global comparison.

Which social-media platform is biggest?

It depends on what biggest means. The leading platform changes when the ranking uses survey-reported monthly use, official active users, registered membership, mobile activity, favorite-platform preference, session frequency, average time or total time.

Global self-reported monthly use

In GWI’s second-quarter 2025 survey of online adults aged 16 and older, respondents reported whether they had used each service during the previous month:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Platform Share reporting monthly use Measurement note
Facebook 56.9% Highest in this survey.
YouTube 55.4% Included as a video platform, so the comparison is not perfectly like-for-like.
Instagram 55.1% Survey-based monthly use.
WhatsApp 54.0% Messaging platform included in the comparison.
Messenger 38.4% Survey-based monthly use.
TikTok 36.0% China and Douyin treatment differs from TikTok elsewhere.

These figures answer a specific question—what proportion of surveyed online adults said they used each service in the previous month. They do not establish a definitive ranking of unique active users, time spent or advertising value.

Favorite platform

When users were asked which platform was their favorite, WhatsApp led with 17.4%, followed by Instagram at 16.4%, Facebook at 13.0% and TikTok at 9.1%. Instagram was the favorite among users aged 16–34, while WhatsApp became more dominant among people over 35. WeChat also ranked highly globally, although almost all respondents selecting it were in China.

Mobile-app activity

Similarweb’s August 2025 Android-app comparison, as reported by DataReportal, gave YouTube a relative active-user index of 100. WhatsApp scored 86.5, Instagram 79.9 and Facebook 77.1, with TikTok fifth.

This is not a universal MAU ranking. The analysis excludes China and relies on consensual mobile tracking, which may not represent iOS, desktop, browser or non-consenting users equally.

Average daily time per Android user

Average time produces a different ranking. In Similarweb’s August 2025 Android data:

Platform Average daily time per measured user
TikTok 1 hour 37 minutes
Instagram 1 hour 13 minutes
Facebook 67 minutes
WhatsApp 59 minutes
YouTube Approximately 14% less time per user than TikTok

TikTok can lead average time per measured Android user while YouTube leads some total-time measures because its audience is broader or larger. Reach and intensity are different business signals.

Opening frequency and session length

Messaging and video services also behave differently within a day. The same Similarweb dataset found that:

  • WhatsApp users opened the app more than 20 times per day on average.
  • TikTok users opened the app approximately 10 times per day.
  • YouTube users opened it approximately 5.9 times per day.
  • YouTube had the longest average session at 14 minutes 29 seconds.
  • TikTok averaged 9 minutes 42 seconds per session.
  • Facebook averaged 7 minutes 17 seconds, while Instagram averaged 5 minutes 56 seconds.

WhatsApp therefore wins on frequency, while YouTube wins on average session length in this dataset. For customer service, direct messaging and repeat contact, frequency may be more useful than a public-feed audience figure.

Official platform statistics

Company-reported numbers are useful for understanding each platform’s own operating scale, but the metrics below should not be combined into one league table.

Platform or company Reported figure Date and metric Comparability warning
Meta Family of Apps 3.56 billion Average daily active people in March 2026; up 4% year over year. Combined Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp metric; not the sum of four unique audiences.
Threads 500 million Monthly active users announced June 16, 2026. MAU cannot be directly compared with daily metrics.
YouTube Billions of monthly logged-in users Current company description; YouTube also reports more than 200 billion daily Shorts views and more than 20 million videos uploaded daily. Logged-in users, views and uploads are different measures.
TikTok More than 1 billion users Company description of its global community. TikTok does not provide a consistently updated, directly comparable global MAU series in the cited material.
Snapchat 946 million MAU Q4 2025; up 51 million, or 6%, year over year. Snap also reported 477 million DAU in Q3 2025; those figures are from different quarters.
Reddit 127 million DAUq and more than 493 million WAUq March 31, 2026; more than 100,000 active communities and 25 billion-plus posts and comments. DAUq and WAUq are Reddit-defined unique metrics, not automatically conventional DAU or MAU.
LinkedIn More than 1.3 billion members Current corporate figure; Q1 FY26 update described nearly 1.3 billion members. Registered membership is not monthly or daily active use.
Pinterest Approximately 600 million MAU Company investor communications describing worldwide monthly active users. Company-reported MAU and date should be retained when quoting the figure.

Meta reported a 19% year-over-year increase in ad impressions and a 12% increase in average price per ad in its first-quarter 2026 results. Those figures help explain the economic importance of the Family of Apps, but they do not prove that every individual service grew by the same amount.

For platform-specific source material, see Meta’s first-quarter 2026 results, Meta’s Threads announcement, YouTube’s press information, TikTok’s global-community statement, Snap’s fourth-quarter 2025 results, Reddit’s company overview, LinkedIn’s corporate information and Pinterest’s investor communication.

Social-media use in the United States

U.S. adults

Pew Research Center surveyed 5,022 U.S. adults from February 5 through June 18, 2025. Its figures measure whether adults said they ever used each platform—not global MAU, daily use or advertising reach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Platform Share of U.S. adults who ever use it
YouTube 84%
Facebook 71%
Instagram 50%
TikTok 37%
WhatsApp 32%
Reddit 26%
X, formerly Twitter Smaller share than the platforms listed above

Pew found that reported adult use of TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp and Reddit had grown since 2021, while YouTube and Facebook remained broadly stable. Age differences are substantial: 80% of U.S. adults aged 18–29 reported using Instagram, and younger adults were much more likely than older adults to use Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and Reddit. YouTube and Facebook were the only platforms in the survey used by a majority across all age groups, with Facebook particularly strong among adults aged 30–49.

These findings are U.S.-specific. They should not be merged directly with DataReportal’s global estimates or with platform-reported worldwide figures.

U.S. teenagers

Pew’s survey of U.S. teens aged 13–17, conducted September 25 through October 9, 2025, found that daily use was concentrated in video and visual platforms:

  • Roughly three-quarters used YouTube daily.
  • 61% used TikTok daily.
  • 55% used Instagram daily.
  • 46% used Snapchat daily.
  • 20% used Facebook daily.
  • 36% used at least one measured platform almost constantly.
  • 21% said they used TikTok almost constantly.

A separate Pew study found that 45% of teens said they spent too much time on social media, up from 36% in 2022. Teen girls were more likely than boys to say social media had harmed their mental health, confidence or sleep. These are self-reported perceptions and do not establish that social media alone caused those outcomes.

The U.S. Surgeon General’s advisory states that adolescents spending more than three hours per day on social media face approximately double the risk of mental-health problems such as symptoms of depression and anxiety. This should be understood as an association and risk warning, not as a claim that every user experiences the same causal effect.

Why people use social media

Social media is not one activity. Among adult social-media users globally, DataReportal’s GWI analysis found that:

  • 50.2% cited keeping in touch with friends and family.
  • 39.7% cited filling spare time.
  • 35.4% cited reading news stories.
  • Users cited an average of 4.69 distinct reasons for using social platforms.

The audience is therefore simultaneously relational, recreational, informational, entertainment-oriented and commercial. A person may use WhatsApp for family communication, YouTube for instruction, TikTok for discovery, Instagram for identity and inspiration, Reddit for specialized advice, and LinkedIn for professional networking.

Time spent, attention and private sharing

The global average of 18 hours 36 minutes per week covers social networks and video feeds together. It should not be presented as exactly 2 hours 39 minutes of traditional social-network use every day. The definition includes video platforms, and averages conceal major differences by age, country, device and individual behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The platform-level patterns are equally important:

  • Video attracts depth: YouTube recorded the longest average session in the cited Android data, at 14 minutes 29 seconds.
  • Short video attracts intensity: TikTok led average daily time per measured Android user at 1 hour 37 minutes.
  • Messaging attracts repetition: WhatsApp users opened the app more than 20 times per day on average.
  • Public reach does not capture private influence: Direct messages, group chats, private sharing and peer recommendations are often invisible in public engagement counts.

DataReportal found that at least 98.8% of users of any given platform also use another social platform monthly, and overlaps among the largest platforms often exceed 70%. A business should therefore measure incremental reach rather than assume that adding a second platform automatically adds a new audience.

Social-media advertising economics

The U.S. advertising market shows how social has moved from an experimental channel into core media infrastructure. The IAB/PwC 2025 Internet Advertising Revenue Report recorded:

U.S. digital advertising category 2025 revenue Additional context
Total digital advertising $294.6 billion All digital advertising in the report’s classification.
Social advertising $117.7 billion Up 32.6% year over year; 40.0% of total U.S. digital ad revenue.
Search $114.2 billion Slightly below social in this classification.
Digital video $78 billion A separate category that may overlap with platform products.
Commerce media $63.4 billion Up 18% year over year.

Social revenue exceeded search revenue in the report’s category totals, but the categories are not necessarily mutually exclusive at the product level. For example, video and commerce products can be sold inside social platforms. These are U.S. advertising revenues, not global social-advertising spending.

The creator economy and influencer marketing

Creator advertising is becoming a recognized media channel rather than only an awareness tactic. IAB projected U.S. creator advertising spend of $37 billion in 2025 and $44 billion in 2026. Creator ad spend more than doubled from $13.9 billion in 2021 to $29.5 billion in 2024. IAB also found that 48% of creator-ad buyers considered creators a must-buy channel, and three in four brands were using or planning to use AI for creator-marketing tasks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical change is that brands increasingly want creators to generate measurable outcomes through affiliate links, paid amplification, whitelisting, livestreams, usage rights and direct-response creative. The unresolved issues include attribution, audience quality, fraud, content rights, brand safety, disclosure and consistent reporting.

HubSpot’s survey of more than 1,000 social-media marketers found that:

  • 77% said influencer marketing delivered better ROI than other channels.
  • 85% said it had been effective during the previous year.
  • 46% planned to increase influencer investment in 2025.
  • 67% worked with micro-influencers.
  • 32% said creators with 1,000–100,000 followers would be a better investment than larger influencers.

Those are marketer opinions and plans, not independently audited ROI measurements. A creator with fewer followers may be a better investment when the audience is more relevant, but follower count alone does not establish profitability.

Disclosure is also a financial and legal issue. The FTC’s endorsement guidance says material connections such as payment, gifts, employment or affiliate relationships should be disclosed clearly and conspicuously. Businesses and creators should document contracts, usage rights, deliverables, disclosure requirements and payment terms before publishing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Social commerce: from shopping destinations to discovery commerce

Social commerce increasingly starts with entertainment or recommendation rather than a shopper visiting a conventional product-search page. A creator demonstrates a product, a viewer sees it in a feed or livestream, and the platform can connect discovery, consideration, checkout and follow-up.

TikTok describes this as discovery e-commerce. Its official U.S. Shop update reported that 2025 U.S. TikTok Shop sales increased 120% year over year. The same update cited GlobalData and TikTok Shop research reporting that 83% of shoppers discovered a new product on TikTok Shop and 76% of consumers who engaged with TikTok Shop bought something from a livestream. These are platform-associated or commissioned findings and should not be generalized to every platform or market.

TikTok also reported more than 8 million hours of U.S. livestream-shopping sessions in 2024. Commerce results vary sharply according to country, product category, logistics, trust, payment infrastructure, platform eligibility and returns policy. Before budgeting around social commerce, verify:

  • Whether the shopping product is available in the target country.
  • Seller, product and payment eligibility requirements.
  • Who controls customer data and remarketing permissions.
  • How sales, returns, refunds and affiliate commissions are attributed.
  • Whether creators can reuse content in paid advertising.
  • How platform fees and fulfillment costs affect net margin.

The biggest social-media trends for 2026

1. Growth continues, but the market is maturing

The global audience is still expanding, but the 4.8% annual increase in identities is slower than the explosive growth of the previous decade. The next phase is likely to be judged less by raw sign-ups and more by penetration in specific regions, adoption among older users, time spent, commercial conversion and revenue per user.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Video remains the dominant attention format

YouTube says Shorts averages more than 200 billion daily views, while Similarweb’s Android analysis places YouTube among the leaders in active use and TikTok first in average time per user. A view is not a person, and short-form video is not the only valuable video format. Short clips can drive discovery while longer YouTube content builds explanation, trust and living-room viewing.

The useful strategic conclusion is not that every brand should publish only short videos. It is that video can serve different jobs: short clips for reach, longer demonstrations for consideration, livestreams for interaction and customer-created video for proof.

3. Social is becoming a search and discovery layer

In Sprout Social’s second-quarter 2026 survey of more than 2,000 users in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia, traditional search remained the first choice overall for about half of respondents. Gen Z showed a roughly even split between traditional search and social search.

Social search was especially relevant for restaurants and bars, where 38% preferred it. About one-third preferred social search for product reviews, news, travel ideas and DIY tutorials. Facebook, YouTube, TikTok and Instagram were the leading social-search platforms in that survey.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This does not show that social has replaced Google or other traditional search engines. It does mean content should use searchable language: descriptive titles, spoken keywords, on-screen context, location information, product specifications, captions and genuinely useful answers—not just hashtags.

4. Social commerce is moving closer to the point of purchase

The combination of creator recommendations, shoppable videos, livestreams, product feeds and in-app checkout is shortening the path from discovery to purchase. IAB’s $63.4 billion U.S. commerce-media figure reinforces the wider advertiser shift toward environments that connect media exposure with purchase signals and first-party data.

However, a platform’s reported sales growth is not a universal forecast for every merchant. Test product-market fit, margins, returns, fulfillment and incrementality before moving a large budget.

5. Creator marketing is becoming a performance channel

Creator campaigns increasingly include affiliate links, whitelisted ads, paid amplification, livestream conversion and reusable creative. That creates more measurable pathways than a one-off sponsored post, but it also creates more operational requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Creator selection should consider audience relevance, content quality, trust, conversion history, brand-safety risk, disclosure compliance and rights—not simply followers. Micro-creators may provide relevance and community credibility, while larger creators can provide scale. Neither is automatically more profitable.

6. AI is becoming infrastructure, while human credibility becomes more valuable

AI is being integrated into content creation, translation, recommendation, advertising, analytics, listening, moderation and workflow automation. Hootsuite’s 2026 trend analysis highlights these workflow changes while also pointing to continued value in human-made and imperfect content.

Audience skepticism is measurable. Sprout Social found that 44% of respondents were uncomfortable with brands partnering with AI influencers, while 27% were unsure whether influencers they followed were AI-generated. The likely strategic result is not that AI replaces creators, but that provenance, disclosure, originality, recognizable expertise and human identity become more important as synthetic content becomes cheaper to produce.

7. Employee and customer voices are becoming distribution channels

Sprout Social found that 40% of respondents frequently discovered products or services through employee-generated content, rising to 61% among Gen Z. Employee content can humanize a company, explain expertise and expand reach, but it requires voluntary participation, clear policies, training and disclosure where appropriate. It should not become covert advertising or pressure employees to publish.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Messaging and private communities remain strategically important

Public follower counts understate the influence of private sharing. WhatsApp’s favorite-platform position and more-than-20 daily openings in Similarweb’s Android data show why direct messages, group conversations, click-to-message campaigns, customer service and peer recommendations deserve their own measurement.

Businesses should track response time, qualified conversations, resolved cases, repeat customers and assisted conversions—not only public likes and comments.

9. Social networks are increasingly important news environments

The Reuters Institute’s 2026 Digital News Report found that 30% of people globally said social media and video networks were their main source of news, up from 22% five years earlier. Twelve percent relied only on social media and video networks for news, twice the 2020 share.

WhatsApp, YouTube, TikTok and Instagram have shown sustained growth as news environments since 2014. Main source does not mean most trusted source, and it does not prove that people intentionally seek news rather than encounter it incidentally. Publishers and brands should plan for context collapse, rapid sharing and correction workflows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Brand reputation is shaped by other people

Sprout Social found that 50% of surveyed consumers were most likely to hear about a brand crisis first on social media. Sixty-four percent said it was important for brands to post during a crisis, and 84% said response speed affected their later perception of a brand.

Social is therefore not just a publishing channel. A credible program needs social listening, review management, employee-advocacy guidelines, creator-risk monitoring, escalation paths and a preapproved crisis-response process. Speed matters, but accuracy and accountability matter too.

11. Regulation, transparency and youth safety are becoming operating requirements

Under the EU Digital Services Act, very large online platforms and search engines are generally defined using a threshold of more than 45 million EU users. Harmonized transparency-reporting rules began applying on July 1, 2025, and very large platforms must publish transparency reports twice a year. The European Commission’s DSA information explains the threshold and obligations.

These rules affect content moderation, recommender systems, advertising transparency, data access and platform accountability. In the United States, the FTC’s endorsement guidance affects paid partnerships, gifted products, employment relationships and affiliate disclosures. Youth safety and mental-health concerns also affect platform design, parental controls and brand governance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. Platform portfolios are more rational than one-platform bets

Because users commonly use several platforms—and at least 98.8% of users of any given platform also use another monthly—businesses should avoid treating platform choice as permanent loyalty. A portfolio may combine YouTube for searchable depth, Instagram or TikTok for visual discovery, WhatsApp or Messenger for customer relationships, Reddit for specialist communities and LinkedIn for professional audiences.

The portfolio should be built around audience overlap, incremental reach, production cost, conversion quality, data access, brand risk and geographic availability.

Which platform should a business, creator or publisher use?

There is no universally best platform. Match the platform to the job.

Objective Platforms to evaluate What to measure
Maximum broad reach YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and—depending on market—TikTok Incremental reach, frequency, cost per reached person and conversions.
Younger-audience reach TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat and selected Reddit communities Age-specific reach, attention, completion, sentiment and qualified action.
Search and discovery YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook Search impressions, saves, profile visits, product views, local discovery and assisted conversions.
Direct relationships and service WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram direct messages and community groups Response time, qualified conversations, resolution rate and repeat business.
Commerce TikTok Shop where available, Instagram and Facebook commerce tools, Pinterest, YouTube creators and messaging-assisted conversion Net sales, margin after fees, returns, new customers and incremental revenue.
B2B and recruiting LinkedIn, supported by YouTube or other specialist channels Lead quality, applications, event registrations, account engagement and revenue—not member count alone.
Community and specialist expertise Reddit, Facebook groups, WhatsApp communities and niche networks Qualified participation, retention, referrals and problem resolution.
News and public information YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, WhatsApp and publisher-owned channels Reach, accuracy, referral quality, correction speed and trust.

Do not assume the platform with the largest global audience will produce the largest incremental reach for your business. Overlapping audiences mean the second or third channel may add less reach but more qualified attention or a better conversion path.

How to build a useful social-media measurement plan

  1. Define the business outcome. Choose awareness, qualified traffic, sales, leads, customer service, retention, recruiting or community—not a vague goal such as going viral.
  2. Define the audience and geography. Separate global, U.S., regional, age-based and professional audiences.
  3. Choose one primary metric and supporting metrics. For example, use qualified leads as the primary metric and reach, cost per lead, response time and assisted conversions as supporting metrics.
  4. Record the metric definition. Write down whether the denominator is followers, reach, impressions, views, active users, clicks or purchases.
  5. Separate organic, paid, creator and employee activity. Combining them can hide the source of results and make future budgeting unreliable.
  6. Track incrementality. Use holdouts, geo tests, platform experiments or carefully designed before-and-after comparisons where practical. A reported conversion is not automatically an incremental conversion.
  7. Include the full economics. Account for creative production, creator fees, usage rights, platform fees, fulfillment, discounts, returns, customer service and staff time.
  8. Keep owned channels in the mix. Email lists, websites, customer records and community data reduce dependence on changing algorithms and account policies.
  9. Review safety and compliance. Include disclosure, consent, copyright, youth protections, privacy, accessibility and crisis escalation in the operating plan.

What the statistics cannot prove

  • They do not prove that 5.66 billion unique people use social media. The figure counts user identities.
  • They do not prove that one platform is definitively the largest. Rankings depend on the metric.
  • They do not make membership equal activity. LinkedIn’s 1.3 billion members are not a daily audience.
  • They do not make views equal viewers. YouTube’s 200 billion daily Shorts views are content views, not unique people.
  • They do not make ad reach equal active users. Advertising estimates describe potential addressable audiences.
  • They do not make global numbers applicable to the United States or another country. Geography and sampling matter.
  • They do not make Android tracking universal. Similarweb’s cited data excludes China and may not represent iOS, desktop, browser or non-consenting users equally.
  • They do not show causation in youth mental-health findings. Survey perceptions and risk associations require careful interpretation.
  • They do not guarantee influencer ROI. HubSpot’s findings describe marketer opinions and plans, not audited profitability.
  • They do not prove that AI will replace human creators. The evidence supports growing AI integration alongside concern about synthetic content and a continuing premium on trust.

Why older social-media listicles can mislead

Many popular statistics pages combine different years and definitions. The Forbes article titled Top Social Media Statistics And Trends, for example, includes a YouTube figure described as current as of 2023, a social-media click-through statistic from 2022 and other mixed-date references. It can be useful for identifying common reader questions, but it should not be treated as a definitive 2026 baseline.

The most common errors are ranking LinkedIn members beside Facebook MAU, treating ad reach as active users, treating TikTok’s community description as audited MAU, mixing global and U.S. data, counting views as people, combining TikTok with Douyin without explanation and ignoring data revisions in China and India.

A reliable social-media statistic should identify the source, date, geography, sample, metric definition, denominator and whether it is reported, surveyed, modeled, tracked or audited.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the largest social-media platform in 2026?

There is no single answer. Facebook led DataReportal’s cited global self-reported monthly-use survey, YouTube led Similarweb’s August 2025 Android active-user index, WhatsApp led favorite-platform preference and opening frequency, TikTok led average daily time per measured Android user, and LinkedIn led registered professional membership. These are different metrics and cannot be reduced to one definitive ranking.

How many people use social media worldwide?

DataReportal estimates 5.66 billion active social-media user identities as of October 2025, representing 68.7% of the global population. The estimate is not necessarily a count of unique people because individuals may have multiple accounts or identities.

Which platform is most popular with Gen Z?

The answer depends on geography and the measure. In Pew Research Center’s 2025 U.S. teen survey, TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube had much stronger daily use than Facebook; 61% of U.S. teens used TikTok daily, 55% used Instagram daily and 21% said they used TikTok almost constantly. Global or commercial decisions should use data for the specific audience and country.

Is YouTube social media?

It can reasonably be included in broad social-media comparisons because it combines user-generated content, subscriptions, recommendations, comments, communities and creator businesses. However, some surveys classify YouTube separately as a video platform, which makes direct comparisons with social networks imperfect.

Is WhatsApp social media?

WhatsApp is primarily a messaging service, but it is often included in broad social-platform studies because it supports group communication, communities, business messaging and peer-to-peer sharing. Its high opening frequency makes it especially relevant for customer service and direct relationships.

Is TikTok a search engine?

TikTok is primarily a short-video platform, but it increasingly functions as a discovery and search layer for topics such as products, restaurants, travel, news and tutorials. Survey evidence supports growing social-search use, not the claim that TikTok has replaced traditional search engines.

How much time do people spend on social media?

DataReportal’s GWI analysis estimates 18 hours 36 minutes per week, or about 2 hours 39 minutes per day, on social networks and video feeds combined. This is a global survey-based average, not a precise measure of traditional social-network use for every person.

Should a business be on every social platform?

Usually not. Choose platforms based on the audience, objective, geography, production resources, conversion path and risk. A focused portfolio with clear measurement is generally more useful than maintaining inactive profiles everywhere.

Is social commerce growing?

Yes, but growth varies by market and category. TikTok reported that U.S. TikTok Shop sales rose 120% year over year in 2025, while IAB/PwC reported $63.4 billion in U.S. commerce-media revenue for 2025. These figures do not guarantee similar results for every merchant or country.

Are social-media users declining?

The latest global DataReportal estimate shows continued growth in social-media identities, with 259 million added between October 2024 and October 2025. Growth is maturing and differs by platform, country, age group and metric, so a decline in one service does not establish a decline across social media overall.

Does AI-generated content replace human creators?

The current evidence supports a more limited conclusion: AI is becoming embedded in creation, recommendation, advertising, translation, moderation and analytics, while many users remain skeptical of AI influencers and synthetic content. Human credibility, disclosure, originality and recognizable expertise may become more valuable rather than disappear.

What are the main risks for children and teenagers?

Pew found that 45% of teens said they spent too much time on social media, and the Surgeon General’s advisory warns that adolescents spending more than three hours per day face approximately double the risk of certain mental-health problems. These findings describe reported perceptions and associations, not a universal causal outcome for every teenager.

The Bottom Line

The most useful social-media statistic is not the biggest number—it is the number that matches the decision. Use global identity estimates to understand scale, survey data to understand reported behavior, platform disclosures to understand company-defined operating metrics, app tracking to understand measured activity, and first-party analytics to judge your own results.
