The listing route, ticker and access rules depend on the security and your country. A listing tells you where a security trades—not whether it is a suitable investment.
Samsung Electronics tickers and exchanges
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. lists two original share classes on the KRX and GDRs on the LSE. Samsung’s investor relations listing page provides these identifiers:

These are Samsung Electronics securities, not a universal ticker for every company in the wider Samsung group. Confirm the issuer, share class and ISIN in your broker’s instrument details before placing an order.
What is the difference between Samsung shares and GDRs?
The KRX-listed securities are Samsung Electronics’ original shares. An LSE GDR is a depositary receipt representing an interest in underlying shares; it trades as a separate instrument and is not the same as buying the original Korean-listed share. The London venue can provide a route for eligible investors whose brokers offer that instrument, but the receipt structure, trading currency, market access and transaction treatment may differ.

The London listing has a recent symbol-history wrinkle. Samsung disclosed that preferred-share depositary receipts moved from the Luxembourg Stock Exchange to the LSE on February 13, 2025, because trading volume in Luxembourg was insignificant. The notice described the London instrument under SMSD and a 25:1 DR ratio. Samsung’s current listing page instead identifies the preferred GDR as SMSEL. The LSE’s instrument information also uses SMSD for the transferred preferred instrument. Check the active symbol and instrument details with your broker or the exchange before trading; do not assume these labels are interchangeable without confirmation. Samsung’s listing page, transfer disclosure and the LSE instrument page document the listings and change.
Can you buy Samsung shares from the US or UK?
Possibly, but there is no single access route that applies to every investor. Samsung’s investor trading guidance describes routes for overseas investors, while making clear that residency and eligibility matter.

- Non-US residents: Samsung says they may trade its LSE GDRs through a securities firm eligible to trade those instruments. This does not mean every broker offers them in every country.
- US residents: Samsung says US residents are prohibited from trading the GDRs covered by that page under Rule 144A. Do not infer eligibility for a different security or route from this statement; check current rules and broker availability.
- Foreign investors seeking KRX shares: Samsung describes direct access involving registration with Korea’s Financial Supervisory Service, an investor registration certificate and an account with a Korean securities firm. It also describes access through a local securities firm or bank eligible to trade Korean stocks.
These are issuer-published access routes, not a guarantee that an account can be opened or a trade is legally available to a particular person. Ask your broker about the exact instrument, eligibility, dealing currency, fees and currency conversion. Check tax treatment with an appropriately qualified adviser or authority in your jurisdiction; Samsung’s guidance does not establish a universal fee schedule or tax result.
How many Samsung Electronics shares are outstanding?
At the end of Q2 2026, Samsung reported 6,648,649,811 shares outstanding: 5,846,278,608 common shares and 802,371,203 preferred shares. These are dated company figures, not a live share count; Samsung’s listing information should be checked for an updated total.

What does Samsung’s innovation activity tell investors?
Samsung Electronics reported investing KRW 37.7 trillion in research and development in 2025, which the company called its highest annual total. In a shareholder letter published in 2026, CEO and Vice Chairman Young-Hyun Jun wrote: “Samsung Electronics remained committed to the future by investing KRW 37.7 trillion in R&D in 2025, our highest ever annual total.” The letter describes work involving HBM4 and GDDR7, a next-generation semiconductor R&D complex, advanced foundry processes and broader display applications. These are Samsung’s own reports of spending and activity, not independent confirmation of future business performance. Samsung’s June 29, 2026 disclosure outlined approximately KRW 2,450 trillion in expected domestic investment over 2026–2040, including approximately KRW 2,100 trillion for semiconductors. Research spending and investment plans can help explain what a company says it is prioritizing, but they do not by themselves establish that its shares are undervalued, will rise, or suit a particular investor. Listing information answers where a security trades; investment decisions require separate consideration of risk, finances and objectives.
