Exploding Kittens raised $8,782,571 from 219,382 backers on Kickstarter in 2015, against a $10,000 goal. For creators, the useful lesson is not that one campaign tactic guarantees millions: its creators credit an unusually large existing audience, a participatory community, and disciplined choices about rewards and fulfillment. The campaign record shows what was pledged, but not what the project earned after costs.
What happened in the 2015 campaign?
Exploding Kittens was presented as “a card game for people who are into kittens and explosions and laser beams and sometimes goats.” Kickstarter lists it in Tabletop Games, with a $10,000 goal, $8,782,571 pledged, and 219,382 backers over a 30-day campaign running January 20 to February 19, 2015. Kickstarter’s campaign record documents those totals and dates.
At the time, Kickstarter reported that the project had become the platform’s most-backed project: 219,382 backers, more than twice the previous record of 105,857. It was also the most-funded Games project and the third-most-funded Kickstarter project overall as of February 19, 2015. Those are historical rankings, not claims about current records. Kickstarter’s contemporaneous account gives that context.
Why did it take off?
A large audience was ready at launch
In a 2019 Kickstarter interview, creator Elan Lee credited partner Matthew Inman’s existing audience from The Oatmeal as a “huge secret weapon.” Lee recalled that the campaign reached its $10,000 goal in seven minutes and collected its first million dollars on the first day. The company’s own history rounds the goal milestone to eight minutes and says more than $1 million came in within 24 hours; those are differently rounded accounts of the launch, so neither should be treated as stopwatch precision. Lee’s interview and the company history provide the respective accounts.

The team responded when the launch surge faded
Lee said the influx from Inman’s audience slowed after two to three days. He described comparing daily comments with daily backers and seeing a one-to-one correlation in his campaign data. The team then focused on conversation and making the campaign fun and participatory rather than repeatedly talking about money. That is Lee’s recollection and interpretation; the interview provides no underlying dataset or method, so it does not establish that comments caused more pledges or that the approach will work for every campaign.
Practical lessons for creators
Build an audience before asking it to back a project
The campaign’s launch benefited from an audience that already existed around Inman’s work. A creator without a comparable partner should not assume a launch-day spike will appear on its own. The grounded takeaway is to treat audience-building and access to likely supporters as part of launch preparation, while recognizing that Exploding Kittens had an exceptional starting advantage.

Plan for the days after launch
A strong first day does not eliminate the need to sustain attention. Lee’s account describes a sharp initial surge followed by a slowdown, and a deliberate shift toward interacting with the community. For a campaign plan, consider what supporters can discuss or participate in after the launch excitement settles; do not treat the specific tactic as a proven growth formula.
Keep rewards close to the product you know how to deliver
Lee warned that adding T-shirts, posters, and other stretch-goal products could have created a separate business and put the campaign and company at risk. Each reward can introduce new suppliers, production steps, quality issues, packaging, and shipping requirements. Before adding one, assess whether it fits the core operation and whether the team can deliver it without distracting from the funded product.

Model shipping and costs conservatively
Lee advised creators to research shipping more than they expect to need, model a worst case, and account for taxes. He suggested calculating shipping against twice the expected box weight and explaining shipping uncertainty clearly. That is his advice, not a universal rule or a verified formula; actual costs depend on the product, packaging, destinations, carrier terms, and applicable taxes. A useful budget should make assumptions explicit and include room for a less favorable outcome.
Separate pledged dollars from money available to spend
The campaign’s $8,782,571 is the gross pledge total in Kickstarter’s historical record. The record and interview do not disclose net proceeds, production costs, fees, taxes paid, fulfillment expenses, or profit. A large funding total is therefore not evidence by itself that the creators kept a large amount or that a similar project will be financially viable.

What the campaign can—and cannot—show
Exploding Kittens offers a vivid case study, not a controlled comparison. Its creators’ retrospective is useful first-person evidence about audience, engagement, reward scope, and fulfillment risks. It cannot isolate which factor caused the result or establish an outcome a different creator should expect. A practical reading is to borrow the planning questions—who is already reachable, how participation will continue, whether rewards add operational complexity, and what costs could exceed estimates—rather than copy the campaign’s headline numbers.
Lee summed up the team’s approach this way: “Don’t try to raise money. Try to raise a community, because the community comes first and then the money follows it.” In the same interview, his fulfillment warning was blunt: “Everything will go wrong. Be so careful.” Both are advice from a creator reflecting on one campaign, not guarantees of funding or delivery.
