It is one part of a larger modernization effort—not the same figure as either South Korea’s approximately KRW 4.56 trillion project cost or the United States’ separate USD 6.2 billion estimate for a possible sale. Public information describes the upgrade’s broad aims and candidate systems, but does not confirm the final aircraft configuration or a first delivery date.
What Boeing’s reported $2.8 billion contract covers
Janes reported that the U.S. Department of Defense announced the award on January 30, 2026: Boeing received an 11-year hybrid contract valued at USD 2.8 billion to design and develop “an integrated suite of aircraft systems” for the Republic of Korea Air Force’s F-15K fleet, on behalf of South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA). The phrase is the work description in the U.S. contract announcement, as reported by Janes.

This is a design-and-development award. Its public description does not establish that the systems have already been installed, specify the resulting operational capabilities, or give a delivery date for any individual aircraft.
Why three different cost figures appear
The figures refer to different scopes and stages of the acquisition. They should not be treated as competing prices for the same contract or added together into an all-in total.

| Figure | What it describes | Source and acquisition context |
|---|---|---|
| Approximately KRW 4.56 trillion | Stated total cost of South Korea’s F-15K performance-improvement project, planned for 2024–2037. | DAPA committee announcement, December 2024, as reported by Janes. |
| USD 6.2 billion | Estimated cost of a possible Foreign Military Sale package for F-15K modernization equipment and services. | U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), November 2024. This was an estimate in a possible-sale notice, not a confirmed final price. |
| USD 2.8 billion | Boeing’s reported contract for design and development of an integrated systems suite. | U.S. Department of Defense announcement, January 2026, as reported by Janes; an 11-year hybrid contract. |
The South Korean project cost, U.S. possible-sale estimate and Boeing award come from different authorities, dates and acquisition instruments. The public figures do not establish a final, all-in program cost.
What the modernization is intended to change
DAPA’s stated objective, reported by Janes after the project committee decision, is to “improve the performance of key components such as radar, and improve the mission capability and survivability of F-15K fighter aircraft.” Public reporting identifies several broad areas:
Rank #2
- This kit includes 3 external fuel tanks
- Includes APG-63 radar system in removable front nose section
- 1/48 Scale Aircraft
- Radar: a new active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar.
- Electronic warfare: improved electronic-warfare capability.
- Mission computing: an updated mission computer.
In October 2025, a ROKAF spokesperson told Janes the program would also change the identification friend-or-foe (IFF) system to Mode 5, update the onboard datalink and make a slight change to the cockpit display. Those comments describe additional reported program elements; they are not a complete, final configuration list.
What the 2024 U.S. possible-sale notice listed
DSCA’s November 2024 notice described equipment and services requested in a possible sale. It listed:

The F-15K, known as the Slam Eagle, is South Korea’s version of the F-15 operated by the Republic of Korea Air Force. Janes reported that 59 F-15Ks were in service when it covered the 2026 contract. That fleet count is tied to the time of that report, not a claim about the current inventory.
Rank #4
- Low part count, easy to assemble kit
- Fully engraved panel lines
- Accurately reproduced airplane
- Four missiles, Scale: 1:144
- Complete decal sheet
“F-15K Slam Eagle 2.0” is not established in the public information cited here as an official new variant name. The supported description is an F-15K modernization or performance-improvement program.
When will upgraded F-15Ks be delivered?
DAPA’s stated project period runs from 2024 through 2037. The public information cited here does not provide a detailed aircraft-by-aircraft retrofit schedule or confirm when the first upgraded F-15K will be delivered. The overall project period should not be mistaken for a schedule that specifies when each aircraft will enter or leave the upgrade process.
