Copy trading is one specific form: a platform automatically places trades in your account based on another trader’s activity. The distinction matters because discussion or sentiment tools inform your decisions, while copy trading can execute orders and expose your money directly to market risk.
What social trading means
Social trading describes investing services that bring social interaction or other investors’ activity into the decision-making process. Depending on the service, you might view other users’ trades, discuss ideas, follow signals, or use a tool that analyzes online sentiment. IOSCO groups copy, mirror, and social trading among online imitative trading practices, but the labels do not mean every service works the same way. IOSCO’s report on online imitative trading describes the broader category.
Social trading does not necessarily mean your account will place trades automatically. A discussion forum or sentiment dashboard may provide information without executing anything. Automatic execution is the defining practical difference in copy trading.
How copy trading works
In a typical copy-trading service, you select a trader or signal provider, allocate money, and authorize a platform to translate that person’s signals into orders in your account. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) describes the practice as “trade automatically copying another investor’s trades.” Depending on the service, you may be able to copy existing open positions as well as new trades. The FCA’s copy-trading guidance and IOSCO’s report explain these arrangements.

- Choose who or what to follow. A platform may present traders, strategies, or signals. A profile, ranking, or past return is not proof that a strategy is suitable or will perform well in the future.
- Set an allocation. You decide how much capital the service may use, subject to the platform’s terms and available controls.
- Authorize execution. The service may place corresponding orders automatically, or it may require you to confirm signals. Check which applies before connecting an account.
- Monitor and manage the arrangement. Your results depend on factors including allocation, timing, execution, costs, and the assets traded. Check how to pause or stop copying and what happens to open positions when you do.
Copying does not make another trader’s results yours. Differences in timing, trade size, execution, and costs can affect your account’s outcome.
How social trading differs from copy trading
| Approach | What you receive | Does it automatically place trades? |
|---|---|---|
| Social discussion or activity feeds | Other users’ ideas, comments, or visible activity | Not necessarily; check the service |
| Social-sentiment tools | Analysis or aggregation of posts and other online content to inform investment decisions | Not necessarily; a sentiment signal is not itself an order |
| Copy trading | Signals from a selected trader or provider | Often, if you authorize automatic execution; some services may require confirmation |
The terms used by a provider are not enough to establish what a service actually does. Find out whether it only presents information, sends trade signals, or can place orders in your account.

- As a day trader, you can live and work anywhere in the world. You can decide when to work and when not to work.
- You only answer to yourself. That is the life of the successful day trader. Many people aspire to it, but very few succeed. Day trading is not gambling or an online poker game.
- To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere.
How regulation depends on the service and location
There is no single global classification for every service described as social or copy trading. The activities offered, the assets involved, the provider’s role, and the user’s jurisdiction can all matter.
United Kingdom
Under its approach, the FCA treats automatic copying as portfolio or investment management when the account holder’s clear manual input is absent. The guidance describes services that turn selected third-party signals into buy or sell orders and explains the obligations that apply to authorized management. This is a UK regulatory explanation, not a universal rule for every country. Read the FCA’s guidance.

Crypto-asset services under MiCA
In an April 2025 Q&A, the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) said that MiCA does not define “auto trading” or “copy trading” as a service label. The actual crypto-asset service must be classified to determine the authorization and requirements that apply. Do not assume that calling a feature “copy trading” settles its regulatory status. See ESMA’s Q&A.
For any location, check the specific legal entity operating the service and whether it is authorized for the activity it provides there. A platform’s availability or a trader’s popularity does not establish regulatory authorization.

Risks to understand before following trades or sentiment
Signals and posts may be unreliable
Social information can be inaccurate, incomplete, misleading, or stale. Posts may have undisclosed incentives, and online discussion can encourage impulsive decisions. The SEC and FINRA caution investors not to rely solely on social-sentiment tools and advise reading disclosures, considering conflicts, comparing results with relevant benchmarks, and maintaining a long-term plan. Read the SEC and FINRA bulletin on social-sentiment investing tools.
Popularity and past results do not establish future performance
A leaderboard, high follower count, or historical return cannot show that a trader’s strategy will continue to work or suit your circumstances. Consider how the trader is compensated, what risks the strategy takes, and whether its approach fits your own time horizon and risk tolerance. Track outcomes against an appropriate market or sector benchmark rather than assuming past performance will persist.

Social-media stock-tip scams and manipulation
The SEC’s February 6, 2026 investor alert warns about stock-tip scams, impersonation of investment professionals, undisclosed paid promotion, and promises of high returns with little or no risk. Verify the identity and registration of anyone offering investments, and do not make a decision based only on posts or group messages. The SEC’s warning is direct: “Investors should never make investment decisions based solely on information from social media platforms or apps.” Read the SEC alert. ESMA has also highlighted risks to retail investors from share trading driven by social media discussion. See ESMA’s notice.
What to check before using a service
- Operator and authorization: Identify the legal entity that provides the service. Check whether it is authorized for the relevant activity in your location, using the regulator’s own resources where available.
- What the feature does: Confirm which assets can be copied, whether orders execute automatically or require confirmation, and whether existing positions can be copied.
- Allocation and controls: Check how much capital can be allocated, what risk controls are available, and how to stop copying. Find out what happens to open positions when copying ends.
- Costs and incentives: Read the fee and conflict disclosures. Consider costs such as fees and spreads, and check whether the platform or copied trader has incentives that could affect recommendations or behavior.
- Strategy fit: Understand the assets, approach, and risks involved. Decide whether they match your financial goals, time horizon, and risk tolerance; do not infer skill from popularity or a short record.
- Independent judgment: Treat posts and sentiment as information to assess, not as a substitute for your own research or a long-term investment plan.
Platform features and terms vary, so verify current details directly with the provider rather than assuming that one service’s controls or procedures apply to another.
