What the reports said happened
The Guardian reported on October 17, 2024, that Meta had reportedly dismissed about 24 employees in Los Angeles following an investigation into meal-credit use. Its account, drawing on the Financial Times and an anonymous post on Blind, listed toothpaste, laundry detergent, wine glasses, and acne pads among purchases made with the credits. The Guardian’s report said Meta had been contacted for comment but did not include a direct company response.
Ars Technica’s October 2024 coverage also reported the dismissals and cited people familiar with the matter who said the employees had abused the system over a long period. These are news reports, not an official explanation of Meta’s policy or a company-confirmed account of each employee’s conduct.
How the meal credits reportedly worked
Coverage described delivery-app credits for employees at smaller offices without cafeterias; larger offices had cafeterias. The Guardian reported allowances of $20 for breakfast, $25 for lunch, and $25 for dinner. Those figures describe the reported arrangement at smaller sites, not a universal benefit for every Meta employee or office.

What conduct was reportedly involved
The reports described more than buying household goods. The Guardian said some employees had food delivered to their homes when they were not in the office, and that workers who only occasionally broke the rules were reportedly reprimanded and kept their jobs. The dismissals were associated in the reporting with more extensive or sustained misuse, rather than a single isolated purchase.
One unnamed worker quoted in The Guardian’s account was described as earning $400,000 and said they had used credits for household goods and groceries, including toothpaste and tea. That salary refers only to this anonymous worker; it is not reported as the pay of all dismissed employees. The Guardian reproduced the worker’s explanation that they did not want to waste a dinner credit on days they were not eating at the office, but that personal account does not establish Meta’s policy or the circumstances of the other employees.
