What Theta Mainnet 3.0 changed
Theta Labs presented Mainnet 3.0 as an upgrade to the Theta blockchain centered on two TFUEL mechanisms: staking to Edge Nodes and burning some TFUEL paid for network services. The design aimed to encourage Edge Node availability while removing some TFUEL from circulation when network services were used. Those stated aims describe the protocol design; they do not demonstrate network performance, staking returns, or an effect on TFUEL’s price.
TFUEL staking and Elite Edge Nodes
Under the upgrade, users could stake TFUEL to an Edge Node, upgrading it to an Elite Edge Node. Theta called the associated reward design “uptime mining”: the stated rationale was to reward node availability and support a globally distributed edge-delivery network. Staking is a token-allocation mechanism, not a guarantee of earnings; actual financial outcomes are not established by the upgrade announcements.
TFUEL burning
The June 2021 update said at least 25% of each TFUEL payment to the edge network would be burned. It also said network transaction fees and smart-contract fees would be burned. Burning removes tokens used for those charges rather than paying them to a recipient. The announcement does not establish that burns will produce a particular token-price outcome.

When Mainnet 3.0 launched
The dates changed as the upgrade moved from announcement to testnet and then to activation. Theta’s official documentation identifies block height 10,968,061 as the Mainnet 3.0 activation point.

These are different protocol functions, not competing investment choices. The announcements describe how TFUEL is used by the network; they do not provide a basis for comparing potential investment returns.

Staking limits and withdrawal timing
Theta’s staking guide lists a minimum stake of 10,000 TFUEL and a maximum of 500,000 TFUEL per Edge Node. It says rewards accrue to the wallet used to stake and that TFUEL can be withdrawn only to that wallet. The guide also specifies an approximately 60-hour unstaking period before withdrawn tokens appear in the wallet. On August 25, 2026, Theta Labs announced that Edge Node had left beta and entered full release. The announcement describes video relay and caching, video transcoding, and 3D rendering using operators’ spare computer resources, with TFUEL earnings. It places AI and machine-learning workloads in a separate product, EdgeCloud Client. These are later product developments, not capabilities to attribute to the 2021 Mainnet 3.0 activation.
