CoinDesk Indices Explained: How Digital Asset Benchmarks Work

CoinDesk indices are benchmarks, not investments. Learn how their methodologies, reference rates, governance and linked financial products differ.

CoinDesk indices are rule-based measures of digital-asset markets—not funds you can buy. CoinDesk also publishes spot reference rates and settlement rates, which can supply prices to an index or financial contract. To understand what a particular benchmark represents, check its objective, methodology, pricing inputs and governance; rules differ by product and can change.

What CoinDesk Indices covers

CoinDesk describes its offerings as including multi-asset indices, reference rates, strategies and related services. Its live catalogue lists product names, tickers and values; because the catalogue is dynamic, check it for current examples and status rather than relying on an older description.

In the October 2026 catalogue snapshot, CoinDesk reported more than $40 billion in benchmarked assets, more than 100 global partners and more than 400 BMR-compliant benchmarks. These are provider-reported figures, not independently verified totals.

What is the difference between an index and a reference rate?

  • An index applies a defined set of rules to represent a market or basket of assets.
  • A reference rate is a published price or rate for an asset or trading pair. It may serve as an input to an index or financial contract.
  • A settlement rate is calculated for a specified settlement purpose and interval. CoinDesk describes its settlement rates as one-hour volume-weighted average prices used in settlement indices.

CoinDesk says its Benchmark Rates are USD-denominated spot rates and are used in calculating indices, including the CoinDesk 20 Spot Index. These terms are related, but they are not interchangeable: the index applies its own methodology, while a rate provides a price under its particular calculation rules.

What is the CoinDesk 20?

The CoinDesk 20 is one of the benchmarks in CoinDesk’s digital-asset index family. Its name alone does not tell you which assets qualify, how they are weighted, when constituents are reviewed or how prices are determined. Those details belong to the current product-specific methodology, not a universal rule that applies to every CoinDesk index.

CoinDesk’s documentation page lists a CoinDesk 20 and CoinDesk 80 methodology dated July 7, 2026, alongside separate methodologies for other products. Consult the current documentation and catalogue for the benchmark’s stated objective, constituent rules and latest status; published materials also include review notices, renamings and cessation notices.

How are CoinDesk crypto benchmarks calculated?

The answer depends on the benchmark. An index methodology may specify its eligible universe, selection and weighting rules, review schedule and calculation conventions. A reference rate has a different job: it determines a price under its own stated inputs and protections. CoinDesk publishes product-specific methodologies and benchmark statements rather than one calculation recipe for all products.

How CoinDesk Benchmark Rates work

For its Benchmark Rates specifically, CoinDesk says it uses prices from at least three exchanges and blends USD- and USDC-denominated trading pairs, converting USDC prices to USD. The rate is calculated every five seconds using the most recent traded price from each contributing exchange, weighted by 24-hour volume. CoinDesk also describes outlier-price protection and penalties for trading inactivity. These details describe this rate methodology; they should not be assumed to apply to every CoinDesk index or rate.

CoinDesk states that contributing exchanges must have at least a BB rating in the latest Exchange Benchmark Report and meet additional requirements. Its Exchange Benchmark explanation says the assessment, created in 2019, evaluates more than 200 centralized and decentralized exchanges using more than 200 qualitative and quantitative metrics. CoinDesk says the rankings underpin its CCIX aggregate index methodology. The AA-to-F grades are presented as a risk-ranking framework, not a simple declaration that one exchange is categorically superior.

How methodology and governance affect an index

CoinDesk says its index committee is the primary governance body for index design, maintenance and publication. Its published Digital Asset Indices Policy Methodology describes a Technical Committee with ongoing oversight of indices and reference rates. Its responsibilities include methodology ownership and review, approval of material changes, unscheduled constituent or weighting changes, treatment of market events, and discretion and conflict mitigation. Public consultation feedback is non-binding; final decisions are made through CoinDesk’s internal governance and committee processes.

Methodology documents are product-specific and dated. For example, CoinDesk lists its Benchmark Rates methodology dated August 25, 2026; its CoinDesk 20 and CoinDesk 80 methodology dated July 7, 2026; and its CoinDesk Multi Digital Asset Indices methodology dated March 17, 2026. Read the document for the benchmark you are evaluating and check for later notices before relying on it.

How to compare two digital-asset benchmarks

Compare the written rules, not just the provider name or ticker. These questions help reveal what each benchmark measures and how its value is produced:

  • Objective and universe: Which market segment or assets does the benchmark seek to represent?
  • Eligibility and selection: What assets or markets qualify, and how are constituents chosen?
  • Weighting and concentration: How are exposures allocated, and are there caps?
  • Review schedule: How often are constituents and weights reconsidered?
  • Price inputs: Which exchanges and pairs contribute, and how are currency conversions or outliers handled?
  • Calculation and settlement: Is the value calculated continuously, at a particular cadence, or under a defined end-of-period convention?
  • Governance and change policy: Who can approve changes, how are market events handled, and how are discretion and conflicts addressed?
  • Licensing and use: Does your intended use of real-time or historical values require a data licence?

CoinDesk directs parties seeking real-time or historical data, or index licensing, to contact its licensing team. Access to a displayed value does not by itself establish permission to use it in a product or financial instrument.

Can you invest in a CoinDesk index?

An index is a benchmark, not an investment vehicle. A fund or futures contract that references one is a separate product with its own terms, costs, risks, trading status and jurisdictional availability. The existence of a benchmark link does not establish that a product is suitable for you or that it will track the index closely.

CoinDesk 20 Crypto ETF

CoinDesk’s homepage reports that ProShares launched the CoinDesk 20 Crypto ETF (KRYP), designed to target the performance of the CoinDesk 20 Index. That describes the product’s stated objective; it does not establish its current status, performance, fees, tracking quality or availability where you live. Check the fund’s current official documents and local access before making a decision.

ICE-benchmarked futures

In an announcement dated February 5, 2026, CoinDesk said Intercontinental Exchange would list seven regulated cryptocurrency futures contracts benchmarked to CoinDesk indices. The announcement establishes the linkage described at that time, not each contract’s later trading status, availability or regulatory treatment. Check current exchange and regulatory information for the contract and your jurisdiction.

Where to verify current details

Before using a benchmark or considering a linked product, confirm the current catalogue entry, the exact methodology and any notices affecting the index. For an investment product, separately verify its official listing, terms, costs, risks and local availability. Benchmark status and product details can change.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
