Everything You Must Know About Nintendo’s Marketing Strategy

Nintendo’s marketing strategy is built around a distinctive play experience: it combines its own hardware and games, extends its characters into other kinds of entertainment, and uses Nintendo Account to connect consumers with experiences across platform generations. The company’s stated aim is to grow the audience for its intellectual property (IP) and foster lasting consumer relationships—not simply to promote individual console launches.

What is Nintendo’s marketing strategy?

Nintendo describes its integrated hardware-and-software business as the center of its entertainment strategy. Around that core, it expands access to its characters and franchises through visual content, mobile apps, theme parks, merchandise, and other real-world experiences. Nintendo Account is intended to help connect these experiences and maintain relationships as consumers move between products and platform generations.

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa says the company’s business activities are guided by two principles: “grow the Nintendo IP fanbase” and “foster long-term relationships with consumers.” This is Nintendo’s stated strategy, not independent evidence that a particular campaign caused sales.

How does Nintendo market its games and characters?

Lead with a distinctive play experience

Nintendo’s annual report identifies its integrated hardware-software dedicated video game platform as the center of its business. The company says it aims to make intuitive entertainment that people can enjoy regardless of age, gender, or gaming experience. That is a design aspiration, not a measured claim about who plays Nintendo games.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Furukawa describes Switch 2 as a platform marketed globally with the phrase “All Together, Anytime, Anywhere.” The positioning emphasizes the experience of playing on Nintendo hardware, rather than treating a console as a standalone piece of technology.

Extend franchises beyond console games

Nintendo identifies visual content, mobile applications, theme parks, and merchandise as ways to give people more opportunities to encounter its IP. Furukawa’s message also names movies and videos, smart-device apps, character merchandise, and real-world experiences.

Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Con - Handheld Gaming Console
  • 6.2” LCD screen
  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends

The company’s stated logic is that more touchpoints can deepen consumers’ fondness for Nintendo’s characters and encourage interest in its dedicated video game platform business. Those channels differ in how close they are to console play and whether they are Nintendo-owned or delivered through an outside experience; Nintendo’s cited materials do not publish comparable channel budgets, reach, conversion rates, or returns on investment.

Connect experiences across platform generations

Nintendo describes Nintendo Account as a connection point spanning platform generations and uniting entertainment experiences centered on its integrated hardware-and-software business. Furukawa presents it as a way to develop consumer connections into lasting relationships across generations.

This makes relationship-building part of the strategy, beyond the promotion of new releases. The company materials cited here do not establish specific targeting practices, personal-data policies, or conversion rates, so those should not be inferred from Nintendo Account’s stated role.

How does Nintendo sustain interest between launches?

Switch 2: introduce new titles while supporting the catalog

In its May 8, 2026 fiscal-year outlook, Nintendo said Switch 2 had made a good start following its June 2025 launch. The company said it planned to keep introducing titles while maintaining interest in previously released games, with the aim of delivering hardware with software to a wide range of consumers. That describes a release-and-catalog approach; it does not identify the advertising tactics behind it.

Original Switch: use the installed base and evergreen games

For the original Switch, Nintendo said it would draw on the existing installed base and its software lineup—including evergreen titles—to expand software sales and maintain engagement. Long-running games can therefore remain part of the platform’s commercial life even as Nintendo develops the next generation.

Nintendo’s worldwide cumulative software figures through June 30, 2026, illustrate the scale of two enduring Switch releases:

What do Nintendo’s reported sales figures show?

Nintendo reported that sales outside Japan accounted for 77.2% of total sales in the nine months ended December 31, 2025. For that same nine-month period, it reported 17.37 million Switch 2 hardware units and 37.93 million Switch 2 software units sold. These figures show the scale and geographic spread of Nintendo’s business during that period; they are not marketing-attribution results and do not establish which channels drove sales.

What can—and can’t—be concluded about effectiveness?

Nintendo’s corporate and investor materials explain the company’s intended strategy and report company-wide sales figures. They do not provide the campaign spending, advertising-channel mix, audience research, acquisition costs, conversion rates, or channel-level returns needed to assess the relative effectiveness of movies, apps, parks, or merchandise.

The evidence supports describing a connected model: make hardware-and-software experiences central, extend characters into additional consumer touchpoints, and use Nintendo Account to connect experiences over time. It does not support attributing specific sales outcomes to any one element of that model.
