Sheffield Wednesday’s takeover is complete: administrators BTG confirmed on 5 May 2026 that Arise Capital Partners LLC had bought the club. The consortium is led by David Storch, alongside Michael Storch and Tom Costin. The reviewed reporting does not establish that Storch is a billionaire.

Who bought Sheffield Wednesday, and when did the takeover complete?

The buyer was Arise Capital Partners LLC, a consortium led by David Storch with Michael Storch and Tom Costin. On 2 May 2026, the English Football League (EFL) announced that the administrators had agreed to transfer the club’s assets to Arise. BTG, the joint administrators, confirmed on 5 May that the sale had been completed. The EFL’s announcement and BTG’s completion statement are the primary confirmations.

BBC Sport described David Storch as an American executive with an aviation-services background. The available sources identify him as the consortium’s leader, but do not substantiate the headline’s “billionaire” description; it should not be treated as established fact.

What happened to the points deduction?

The EFL said Wednesday met the relevant League requirements and was no longer considered to be in administration. BTG reported that the EFL Board decided not to impose an additional 15-point deduction following the club’s exit from administration. BTG said the club would start the upcoming season on zero points. These were decisions reported at the time of the May 2026 sale, not a guarantee about the club’s points position in later seasons.

How did Arise become the buyer?

The sale followed an unsettled process. On 10 March 2026, Sheffield Wednesday said Arise had become the new preferred bidder after the previous preferred bidder withdrew. The club said Arise had provided a substantial deposit and evidence of funds, and entered an exclusivity agreement while the EFL process continued. Preferred-bidder status signalled progress, not a completed transaction; completion was confirmed in May. The club’s March update sets out that stage of the process.

What conditions remained after the sale?

BBC Sport reported at completion that Wednesday would remain under budget restrictions for two seasons while still being allowed to sign new players. That is a reported term at the time of the takeover; the sources cited here do not establish whether those restrictions were later changed or remain in force. BBC Sport’s takeover report covers the reported restrictions.

What the takeover does—and does not—confirm

  • Confirmed: Arise acquired the club’s assets, the sale completed, and the EFL said Wednesday had exited administration.
  • Confirmed at completion: the EFL did not impose the additional 15-point deduction, and BTG said the club would begin the upcoming season on zero points.
  • Not established by these reports: that David Storch is a billionaire, the financial terms of the deal, or whether the reported two-season budget restrictions have since changed.

Storch said on behalf of Arise that the club deserved “stability, ambition and a clear direction.” That is the new owner’s stated intention, not evidence that those outcomes have already been achieved.
